People who say race has nothing to do with it are generally misunderstanding the the problem. It's not about "Oh there's a f*cking n-bomb, let me go find a reason to shoot him," it's about the calculations that are made in microseconds during situations like this. "He's reaching for something, what could it be, hmmm probably a gun" is probably what happened in this officers head during the split second it took for this to escalate to gunfire. He probably didn't even think about the dude's race, it was just a subconscious assumption. But if he had pulled over a granny and she had done the exact thing, would this have happened? No. If he had pulled over a nerdy white dude, would this have happened? Probably not. This isn't even a "omgangsta thug lol he shudnt dress like dat if he dun wanna get shot lol" situation either, which is why it's so obvious that race was probably a factor (not condoning that mentality either, but it inevitably comes up whenever the cops shoot a black dude who isn't in his Sunday best). That's why this cop got fired for it, because there is literally no way for the police department or the media twisting this into anything but a sh*thead cop making wild assumptions about a black guy who wasn't doing anything wrong besides not wearing his seat belt.

 

Of course this is all wild speculation. We can't really ever know exactly why this happened, but it doesn't mean we can't talk about it on an internet video game message board.

Did anyone point out this happened 21 days ago? Or that the cop has already been dismissed, and arrested (and released on $75,000 bail)?

 

Despite the obvious problems of the incident itself (what-the-f*cks all around), I think the system in South Carolina is (surprisingly) handling it pretty well. The former cop is a former cop. His gun and badge are gone. He was even arrested. The bail was set at a level suggesting the courts aren't taking it lightly. He faces 20-30 years in jail on charges of aggravated assault and battery. So far so good on the response end.

In related news, it looks like surveillance video of the John Crawford III shooting was also released yesterday.

 

 

For those who haven't heard, Crawford was killed by police last month for holding an airsoft rifle inside an Ohio Walmart. Officers initially claimed he turned and pointed the rifle at them, ignoring orders to drop it. Judging by the video, he was shot on sight by officers armed with assault rifles.

I don't really give a sh*t if the police drive around in ex-military vehicles. In fact, if they're given for free in lieu of them having to buy armoured vehicles for armed response duty then I'm an active supporter of it and fail to see why other people aren't- I mean, it's not like the army are also handing over Bushmaster cannons or Mk19s that used to be attached to them so really they're just slightly more imposing SWAT busses.

 

I don't think I've ever seen anyone claim that police should get grenade launchers, nor do I know of any instance where a police force supplied with explicitly lethal (as opposed to specialist less-lethal/crowd control) grenade launchers (different calibre if anyone is interested), and the only police force I've found reference to being supplied grenade launchers by the military at all returned them. Though it's worth noting that the "different calibre" rule doesn't go both ways- you can get less-lethal 40mm grenade ammunition (smoke/CS) so as long as they weren't also being supplied with high explosive, incendiary or armour piercing grenades I don't really see why police forces inheriting grenade launchers from the military as opposed to having to buy them is exactly problematic anyway.
