I think you're misreading the reasons why Rockstar is porting to the new consoles. You think it's so they can create a dynamic, ever-growing world on a game system that can finally handle it. As a cynic, I believe it's for one simple reason: it's CHEAP. They don't have to spend millions on development. Everything has already been written and coded. They can release essentially the same game with better graphics, toss in a few little extras like new cars and music, and enjoy a HUGE profit margin for very little effort.

What do they have to gain by creating a whole new area? They won't be able to charge people 70 bucks for it. The amount of profit won't justify the expenses.

Now they might release new content in the same world, like Skyrim and Fallout have done. I could even see them opening Yankton - because it's already been made. But to create a whole new city like Detroit or Miami? Not likely.

Porting isnt the best word to describe it IMO since its far more then a direct port & upping the resolution & FPS. Then entire game has been "remastered" if you will. Everything looks to have FAR more detail.

Cheap? Not likely. They had a team working on the new version since before release last year. I cant see it being "cheap", but certainly isnt anywhere near the cost of an entirely new game.

I think they will likely create another GTA in the next few years. It will include the same GTA:O we already have but in another city. The full game will retail for full price & maybe offer just the city as DLC for GTA:O. At least, i hope so.

So I have been thinking ever since the next gen announcement if there could possibly be some map expansion since those consoles could handle it. Somewhere like North Yankton. I think its a possibility but im not getting my hopes up on it

What the...? I dont even....

Current gen consoles couldnt handle it? Why is there a thread on this topic only concerning next gen??

Current gens could handle it IF the city you would be traveling to would be far such as North Yankton, VC, LC, etc. because it would treated as just as a different server....the way servers are split up with aim settings as an example. You just drive to the airport, buy a 20,000 dollar ticket R*'s way of overpricing sh*t) and fly to your destination. There would be no effect on the game itself, you would just need a hell a lot of space on your ps3 or xbox360. Maybe this is what that huge update that R* has been warning us about includes.

After all, R* did mention in the recent past they thought about adding cities to current gen.

So OP, add current gen options to your poll?

The answer is obviously yes. R* has already said they are going to expand the map at some point..... unless they are waiting for PS5 and Xbox 2.

No. It took about 4 years and tens of millions of dollars to make this one.

$265 Million to be exact, but how do you know they weren't already planned during the initial stages of development?

Just playing devil's advocate here...

Edit: Just to add, they made $1 Billion in sales in the first three days. That's about a 400% return on their investment. :p

The majority of the money was spent (wasted, more accurately) on advertising rather than game design. The GTAV world is a masterpiece, but it's just too difficult and takes too long, to create that much detail. As was pointed out above, in the GTA IV era, all the DLC stories were on the same map. I think it will be like that for GTAV next gen and each game beyond that.

An interesting thing to consider is that the ability of new consoles and PCs to render the virtual worlds may actually be so great, that the limiting factor becomes the amount of labor involved in the game design, rather than the ability of the hardware to sling polygons at 60 frames/second.

There would be no issue with the current game "handling it" because it already "handles" the map we have, you would just be on a different map, not multiple maps at the same time...

...but we won't see any new maps

Nope. This game is winding down, on either gen console. They're going to be shifting resources to the new Red Dead pretty soon.

The exact opposite is true, this is litetally just the begining, they have been ironing out the core game and prepping ps4/xbone. R* has confirmed they have a LOT planned, including adding maps from previous iterations of GTA to the GTA V universe.

why would different maps be on a different server thats dumb.. it be more smart to be able to drive or fly to the other main city without switching servers...

adding more servers would put extra stress on the servers

There will be no way in hell they would expand this map. R* didn't say there would be a map expansion coming to the current gen consoles.

The only "map expansion" I think we would, or should get reasonably on NG, is probably more interiors. I see that as the most realistic addition to the map. There are plenty of places too, more open gas stations like the one by grove (not all are accessible), quickie marts, or the restaurants and fast food places. police stations, banks, that kinda stuff. Why add more land when the current map we have isn't even being utilized to its fullest potental.

People might say whats the point in these places being opened up, well I say at the very least they are more places to potentally rob

Only thing that's possible is Liberty City. They're not going to make a new city until the next GTA. And they will not just add on to V's map either.

I think there will be a new map expansion at some point. Either updated Liberty City(With some contruction sites being finished) or finished North Yankton.

I doubt it'll be next gen exclusive though. They'd want it available for all their players to buy so they get more $$$$

Thats what i meant. If we had to drive to new locations then current gen consoles could not handle it. If we had to fly, then current gen could handle it since it would be different servers. By flying, i mean with an airport ticket. That wouldnt be stupid. It would be sensible.

Ummm yeah...they did...

They said they were trying to or thinking about doing so in the near future "if the current gen consoles could handle it". Thats a direct quote, that are in the quotations.

I did not read any of the last 3 pages and I know the answer. Those that can afford a PS4 say yes and those that can't say no.

Precisely - GTAV's map will not be physically added to.

Any new regions/states/cities will only exist seperately from V's map. You won't be able to directly sail or fly or swim etc to other places; instead you'll probably just pick a location at the airport and get a cutscene while you load into the new city, or you'll just switch cities from the start menu just as you currently switch sessions.

And yeah, we won't be getting ANY other locations appart from IV's Liberty City until GTA VI is released, and alongside it, its new map will become available in online.

Wrong. North Yankton was already accesssible online thru a glitch that was then patched. So not only is North Yankton possible but it actually already exists in the game we just cant get there anymore.

Theyll probly charge us to go there thats why it was patched.

So yah liberty city is not the only possibility.

GTA:O will still exist when GTA:VI is released. I reckon when VI is released, there'll add that island to the V island currently in GTA:O

Before that... North Yankton as DLC

No, he's right.

North Yankton (or what exists of it) is a tiny and incomplete area.

It's not going to become a fully fleshed-out location anytime soon.

North Yankton merely fulfils the same role as "Ghost Town" in GTA3 and Liberty City in GTA:SA.

  • Most of the map isn't solid, Roads / rails are functional within Cavalry Boulevard, but as the player drives further away, the roads/rails fail to load textures and end in boundaries that will fall futher beyond this point. Trees are missing textures, except the closest ones (to the main road), and some are placed over other roads. There is Missing terrain, with "fences" blocking large portions of the map.
  • All objects, such stop signs, trashcans and fences are unbreakable compared to the Los Santos counterparts. This due to the fact that North Yankton doesn't allow the player to explore.
  • Train signs are made with permanent warning lights on, even in Online pre-patch.
  • Unlike Los Santos and Blaine County, North Yankton does not allow players to roam around the whole map, as attempting to do so will result in mission failure. This is because the rest of the map doesn't physically exist and several areas are not solid.

Yankton was only a street and some fields. The rest was an illusion of a bigger area. Letting us explore Yankton would require them to use resources to actually design and create an entire new map. Something they sadly most definitely will not do. Even adding Liberty City is a stretch, and that whole map can just be ported. But it's the only possibility of map expansion in GTA:O as they already spent years and millions making Liberty City in HD. They'll probably hold on to it like an ace in the pocket. As soon as people stop playing GTA:O they'll throw in LC.
