philbeau
I wanted to know if some of you had experience with the GTX 690. I already have a GTX 780TI, but I could get the 690 for about 500$ canadian. I'm not planning to sell the 780TI, I just want to try the 690 (maybe make a second build). I have a 1440p screen, so I'm concern with the 2gb vram (2x2gb sli) of the 690. Benchmarks that I find on the internet, don't seem to show that 2gb weren't enough altough. The 690 is still a beast of card. So what are your toughts, preferably if you have first hand experience with the 690.
yoječ
The 690 is still a beast of card.In benchmarks, yes. But it's a dual GPU card with all its drawbacks and benefits... mostly drawbacks. High power consumption and temperatures, microstuttering, limited compatibility, etc. Not worth it for $500 IMHO, I'd much rather prefer even a standard GTX780. philbeau
Thank you, you seem like almost the only one that respond to tech questions. I don't see the point to buy a GTX 780 since I already have a GTX 780ti. I had 2 GTX 760 and didn't have any issues related to SLI. For the price here 500$can is not really high for that kind of price, might even resell it where I live for 600$. I'll think about it, it's just that I like to mess with pc and buy and sell often a lot of stuff.
sivispacem
IMO a 690 is an effective downgrade from a 780Ti. There are certain situations where that extra gig of VRAM and the slightly higher pixelling performance will give it the edge, but under most conditions at resolutions 1440p and below the 780Ti will be faster in the real world, away from benchmarks. yoječ
GTX690 doesn't have an extra 1GB of VRAM. It's a dual GPU card, so effectively it has 1GB less than GTX780Ti. Also GTX980 has just been released for $550, and it really puts GTX690 to shame. Heck, even GTX970 ($300-350) is a far more reasonable choice. I would not buy used GTX690 for more than circa $250 Edited September 19, 2014 by yojo2
philbeau
I don't see it as a downgrade to my 780ti since I don't plan to ge rid of it. I just like to try different configurations (Maybe make a second build). Also, I offered 450$ for it and he accepted. For 250$ I can barely find a used 680, and I can get at least 600$ at worse if i sell it back in my town. I know the new gtx launched yesterday, but I don't plan to buy one now, i'll wait for gtx 980ti (or whatever the name they give it). I'll get the gtx 690 next friday, so I can give you benchmarks from the game I play, comparing to my 780ti. Edit : I tried my gtx 690 and get less performance in all the games I have tried except for mafia 2. My skyrim was modded and took more that 2gb of vram so I have a lot of stuttering. Seem like one of my gpu is running less than the other, my gtx 760 sli set-up ran roughly at the same %. In gpu-z, my gpu 1 run at 16x, and my gpu 2 run at 1x (pci-e 3.0 for both). Didn't have the time to change a lot of setting in Nvidia control panel. I did some benchmark with Tressmark and Cinebench and had better results altough. philbeau
Sorry for bumping my old thread, but I just switched my 690 with my 780ti and can surely say for now that in every scenario, I can get my 690 to perform better than the 780ti in my system. I don't know why but even when running single gpu on my 690 in games that don't support sli, I get better performance than the 780ti. When having the the 780ti certain games use as much as 2700mb or so of vram, but when using the same game the amount of ram stay under the 2gb usable ram of the 690 (sometimes gets higher but doesn't drop frames under 60fps) No regrets on buying the 690. AzO
Have you done a fresh system reinstall after changing the card? You didn't have to, just curious.
philbeau
Have you done a fresh system reinstall after changing the card? You didn't have to, just curious. No, I just swap my cards from time to time. Altough the first time I tried my 690, I did a fresh install because in about every game I tried I was getting very low performance. So I gave it a try and after the reinstall everything was normal.

Well no surprise there... It's a dual GPU card. 2. That's... rather interesting... 3. That's because the game can only work with what you have. The 690 has 4GB of RAM on the card but In reality the card can only use 2GB of RAM because that's how SLI works. RAM from both GPUs doesn't stack. LiniArc
Other than Titan Z; 780TI is my choice. Its Fast and Rapid at some resolutions.

I don't know if someone with a different configuration would have the same results. Other than Titan Z; 780TI is my choice. Its Fast and Rapid at some resolutions. yoječ
It could be just something with your system. Kinda reminds me of when I bought an SSD after having a positive experience with it (my friend had one). It turned out to be a disappointment, it didn't give the boost I was looking for. Sold it shortly afterwards. Never figured out what was wrong, in benchmarks all seemed fine... Edited November 1, 2014 by yojo2

yoječ
The thing with R9-295X2 is that it's not safe to use, it violates the ATX spec - too high power draw for the number of connectors it has (too much current going through at high load). It should have 3 power connectors to be on the safe side. Some versions do actually, but a minority. LiniArc

What do you think should be the best card [Nvidia or Ati] that has good performance and affordable price as well? Also the manufacturer; In India we generally dont have EVGA as we have Zotac. I just recently found out that u are the led by here; Sorry man I wasnt Knowing Edited November 1, 2014 by Cristiano Ronaldo
yoječ
I'd say the card with best price/performance ratio as of now are either R9-270/GTX660 od R7-265/GTX750Ti. All of them are good value. As for the brands, I'd stick to ASUS/Gigabyte/MSI, or maybe Zotac if they offer 5 year warranty in your country.

Maybe if they come up with something like 980ti or a Titan succesor I would be tempted. The only good radeon I had was at the time the hd 7870 ghz edition. Never had problem really with it. 295x2 would be a good card, but again money is a factor. If I had the buget I would try all of them (the highest performance cards). But Nvidia seem to have the upper hand in gaming these days.
