What do you view gaming as?

I was washing my dishes not too long ago and I had a thought - what do you view gaming as a whole as? Do you think it's just a hobby, a competitive form of sport, etc.? I personally think it's a hobby/entertainment thing that lets you act out things you know you can't in reality. For instance, I know I can't steal cars and shoot police and walk away scot-free with it. But I know there's other folks who look at gaming as a competitive, hardcore sport. With that said, what is gaming to you? Is it a hobby, is it a sport, or is it something new that wasn't mentioned yet?

For me, its a way to escape the day to day grind. I put my headset on, have my favorite drink beside me, pop my favorite game in and away I go... Yes, a hobby to some, to others a way to make a living doing it professionally.

Gaming for me is two hobbies in one. I like playing all of my games, but I also like collecting games and consoles. Every now and again I will buy an old console, for example last week I bought a Gamecube.

Why can't it be both of these things? They aren't mutually exclusive; sport is particularly evident of that.

As an entertainment, and as having a lot of fun!

But, not mindless fun either. I'm more into RPG, challenging, and tactical gaming.

It's more about making the most out of my precious time, refreshing, and different from the many real life experiences, I come across, each day, while my interest is driven by whoever has the best to offer - the imagination and skillful gameplay.

A little bit of both but more leaning on the entertainment side, just something to get your head out of the real world and relax for a while with a huge community.

just something to pass the time and enjoy. like reading a book or watching a movie.

unlike reading a book or watching a movie i do think that gaming can be a sport as it's competitive. if that's what people get out of it then cool have fun!

I see videogames as a way to free my mind from stress, ´cause my suppodesed "best friend" piss me off a lot at school, and when I arrive home, I turn on the PlayStation 3 with any videogame, normally GTA, and I start killing everyone arround so my anger goes away. But I see it as a great way to spend my free time.

I see them as three things.

1) Art. While I only consider three games I've played to be art (Mother 3, Max Payne 3 and Persona 3), games do have the potential to be art.

2) A hobby. Self explanatory.

3. A way to escape the troubles of life. While films and books do have the potential to be this, I've personally found gaming to be the most effective. Another reason is because gaming can put a spin on anything. Whether I'm a career criminal, or a hardboiled fugitive cop on the run or even a teenage high school student fighting in sprawling dungeons while maintaining a good social life, I fing gaming does it better than film or books.

I think gaming as a whole as evolved into a thing too large to define with any other word than well, gaming.

I see it as my pastime, something to do when everything else falters, or when I'm off work and finished working out at the gym. I'm not a big TV person, so games are my primary source of entertainment. (:

Entertainment, like television and music. I guess you could call it a hobby too if it encompasses a good deal of your time, but I don't think it has any more merit than other forms of entertainment unless you're reviewing/LPing, or playing in tournaments or something.

I think gaming's culture is very comparable to the culture created out of film in the 20th century. You've got famous directors in big-name companies, cult classics, a thriving indie/amateur scene, and lots of money being made out of reviewing them. I don't know much about film, or even very much about the gaming industry, that's just the way I see it as a casual observer of both.

Interactive entertainment.

Just like how I might watch a stupid movie to turn my brain off from having to think - Except with video games I get a sense that I am involved and my brain is actually functioning a bit higher then just absorbing a movie plot.

When playing video games I'm pleasantly distracted from the concerns of real life "food, shelter, money, etc..." needs.

I don't view it as a way to kill time. Gaming to me is an end in itself. I have to make time to play games, not the other way around.

I only play games with a strong focus on story however, and yes, on graphics. Being a huge fan of cinema, films are a meaningful pursuit and not just something to kill time when bored, and games are an extension of that. I have to be in the mood to see a certain film, as I have to be in the mood to play a certain game.

It goes without saying that this is a pretty elitist point-of-view. Just like being a petrolhead means I see cars as meaningful pursuits, ends in themselves, and not just A to B necessities.

Whatever. I have no interest in culinary arts at least. Food is a necessity to me, not a passion.

Gaming itself? A waste of time better spent on working towards high-level goals, which may or may not involve video game extensions to be used by a wider range of people.

For me, it's a way to escape and be a part of a world that doesn't really exist. It's like reading a book but better because I get to interact with the characters, develop the plot, and explore the setting.

Imagine being in Megaton now go there when you pop in FallOut 3. Gaming, if done right, can be a wonderful experience.

It is a life long hobby that's quite entertaining.

Started out as a hobby, but like anything you do for a long time and like, you get better and eventually you set out to be better than everyone else at it. Basically i play to be competitive now.
