Why do people answer their phones - and say nothing?

I've never understood this concept and need someone to clarify this logic.

You know what I'm talking about.

So I call someone, they answer their phone but don't say a word. They answer and don't say anything, yet for some strange reason don't hang up either.

This happens alot and I don't understand it.

Why do you do this?

I really don't know what you're talking about.....

I play alone alot and when I do, I don't want to be bothered by other people so I don't answer calls or party invites (people use those to distract you, it's an old GTA IV trick).

I will answer the occasional txt because people love my gamertag and I have added a few friends. But I'm antisocial most of the time in free roam...I shoot first.

You actully make sense in your reasoning.

I'm talking specifically about players, with microphones, who answer their phone and stay on the line without speaking. I'm usually one to hang up after speaking and they still don't say anything.

Just..... why? lol

I know what you meant. The GTA IV diversion trick was my answer to that...you didn't play IV's multiplayer did you? The phone in IV could get you killed so it was best just to answer the phone and leave it open.

Honestly with all the hate speech. I don't see how anyone can wear a mic outside of party chat.

The OP is referring to how if you call another player, when they pick up they (usually) don't say anything at all, instead of a simple "Hello?" or "What is it?".

OP probably those people don't have a mic?

If someone doesn't have a mic and you call them, then they never receive the call, but your phone rings four times as if you're waiting for them to pick up. After the phone rings four times, you automatically hang up.

If someone does have a mic, then they receive the call as they normally would any other NPC-related call and they can accept or reject it, except it's a two-way conversation rather than you just listening to Ron and Lester's blather.

I love how it costs 10$ per call. Surprised it doesn't cost to send text messages. Our avatars must have TxtFree.

Or even WhatsApp.

They must do it in real life too.. I was sat on the bus earlier and a guy got on, his phone rang and he just sat with it next to his ear for the next 10 mins. No "hello" or reply of any kind. Then he rang someone else and just said "what cha doin bro?" and then another 10 minutes of silence.

Sir Golden Gecko

Nope. You've been lied to. Can't answer a phone call without a mic. Period.

Nope. Called a friend when he had no mic plugged in. He was able to answer and hear me.

Good day to you.

That's called listening to the other person...

OT: The real question is why OP felt the need to make an attention thread about not getting attention in-game.

In case any of you were wondering this was -all- my fault and I'll explain why.

I'm already in a party with other people when I make these phone calls.

Meaning they were probably talking but couldn't hear me :(

No. Avid GTA IV multiplayer- to this day.

I don't see all these ulterior motives you seem to spot all the time.

I've never even thought of this being a trick. Maybe you're normal and I'm just naïve idk.

Why do you do this?

People can still answer their phone when their mic is on mute and maybe they aren't paying attention...

But i think the real question should be,,,Why are you calling random people?

Why are you calling randoms???

If they seem cool and friendly by how they play or otherwise, why not?

Looking for new people to play missions with, recruiting, boredom, trying to be nice. If they don't pick up nothing lost.

I could be asking you the same question. Why are you talking to randoms?

I only started phoning complete randoms non-stop to see if this theory panned out after I first noticed this happening.

Can you call people who are in a party?

Timely was closest to the truth.
