Why do people answer their phones - and say nothing?

I've never understood this concept and need someone to clarify this logic.

You know what I'm talking about.

So I call someone, they answer their phone but don't say a word. They answer and don't say anything, yet for some strange reason don't hang up either.

This happens alot and I don't understand it.

Why do you do this?

They're shy

That might explain it.

They want to say something but can't, yet still want to hear a voice.

Some people might have this fetish of listening to someone's breath through the mic.

I've knowned a few of those.

I've noticed that, too. I guess a simple "hello" is too much to ask for.

FYI, only people with mics can be successfully called -- if someone picks up, then they have a mic plugged in.

Glad I'm not the only one to notice this.

Just test it and you'll see how strange it is. Call random peeps and you'll see many, many will pick up but won't say a word in response yet leave their phone open.

And you know these people have microphones otherwise it wouldn't give you the option.

It'd be like calling someone in real life, and said person answering the phone and setting it down. wtf

I'm wondering the opposite. Why do people never text back?

At least then you know they most likely don't want anything to do with you. That actually makes more sense.

I've done that to telemarketers, maybe they're just annoyed by your call and leaving you on the line prevents you from calling them back.

Because pausing to text a message leaves you extremely vulnerable for a couple minutes.

in real life i'd rather send a text that make a phone call...

i love to text ingame but text feature is so laggy(at least on ps3) that leave you vulnerable for longer that it should.

Only called randoms to test my theory.

It really happens when I'm playing with friends and we decide to let someone else into the party. They seem pretty friendly or cool after playing a few missions or so, so I call to make sure they're level headed. Too often they answer without saying a word.

Really? I thought that option was available anyway (and people without mics just wouldn't be able to communicate if they take the call). But that makes sense.

Oh well... I think someone lied to me when I texted him asking if he had a mic.

don ovdi' island

I love how it costs 10$ per call. Surprised it doesn't cost to send text messages. Our avatars must have TxtFree.

Why do you do this?

1. they don't have a mic.

2. they assume you have something to say to them, since you're calling.

3. they have no mouth.

4. they're busy looking up where you are on the map.

5. they're preoccupied with something mentioned in previous replies.

Nope. You've been lied to. Can't answer a phone call without a mic. Period.

Let me start off by saying I don't use a mic in this game. I still get people calling me. I don't (can't) say anything yet they stay on the line. Do people that call other people check to see if the person they are calling even has a mic? There is this wonderful symbol on your picture that tells you if you have voice chat active, it will even tell you what type of chat they are set to.

I play alone alot and when I do, I don't want to be bothered by other people so I don't answer calls or party invites (people use those to distract you, it's an old GTA IV trick).

I will answer the occasional txt because people love my gamertag and I have added a few friends. But I'm antisocial most of the time in free roam...I shoot first.

You actully make sense in your reasoning.

I'm talking specifically about players, with microphones, who answer their phone and stay on the line without speaking. I'm usually one to hang up after speaking and they still don't say anything.

Just..... why? lol

There to young so they don't talk

Too young to talk... so they have a microphone and answer the call, but instead of hanging up they sit there in silence while someone else is speaking?

Gotcha

This happens in GTA IV too. Even there it won't let you call unless the player you're trying to reach has a mic.

When Ron or Lester call you, do you say "Hello?"

No, you answer the phone and they start talking.

Maybe people are so used to it that they do they same thing when actual living people call.

Oh, so I guess I was right in my first post. The Call option is available even if the person you're calling doesn't have a mic.

This, and I find it generally a pain in the a$$ to message while I'm trying to play. Not interested in talking either so I don't use a mic. If I want to chat with GTA players I'll just come here.
