Should the fighting style of GTA VC be better?

GTA VC is a great game, and Tommy is a badass. But I didn't like the fighting style of the game. I mean R* just gave Tommy some plain punches, and that kung fu kick? Not for a street mobster. Seeing as how Tommy spent 15 years in prison, you'd think R* would give him more advanced fighting styles. Anybody else agree that Tommy should have a more advance fighting style?

The Mysterious One

Didn't Claude have a similar fighting ability or was it different? At least CJ's fighting style was different and improved, whether it was just using the attack button and he just used his fists or pushing the other button when he used boxing, martial arts or kickboxing as styles.

I think Claude's was the same other than the exclusion of that kung fu kick. Who knows? Tommy might've picked up that kung fu kick from in prison, either from other inmates or from reading about it in the prison library.

I agree. More proof that R* is getting lazy. Tommy spent 15 years in prison. So he should at least have street fighting moves. Plus he's from Liberty City for crying out loud.

Lazy? Vice City released just over (5 days) a year after III did; improving the engine and the progression from III to VC is outstanding for a year, and having an opinion on the fighting style is fine, and I agree that it could be improved but at the time it was GTA, not a wrestling game like SvR where the focus is on melee combat and I doubt Rockstar's main focus was the opinion of the fighting styles 10+ years after release; devaluing a game based on something as trivial as the fighting style is absurd, if it bothers you that much then you could download new animations for the game.

I just started playing VC again and yeah it's pretty crude. However I like that Tommy can land punches from running/walking.

You're right. I'm very contrite. Sometimes, it's not wise to point out a flaw of something.

Well, for those who played VC and III, you should have noticed Tommy's and Claude's fighting moves were the same. The only difference was that Tommy did a Kung Fu Kick and also a left hand punch. Atleast SA introduced a totally new fighting style.

Now I know that R* has a propensity to do a perfunctory job at making their games and usually starts off rudimentary. But they could've giving Tommy a street fighting style, because let's face it. There's no way anyone could survive a decade and a half in prison without learning how to fight very well. It doesn't have to be realistic. Just cohesive to Tommy's personality.

Dang i think VC fighting style was pretty cool. You could headbutt and you could like elbow a dude thats stand behind, and try this if your in a fight and the guy is behind you throw a kick it will be a f*cking spinning side kick or something like that.. But yeah Tommy was a kung fu fighter with alot of crazy kicks and it was new in the 80´s those kicks and sh*t so alot of people did this. Like Jackie Chan Van Damme Chuck Norris everybody watched these.

Well suggesting GTA VC's old age and when R* developed it, I wouldn't care. But they just wanted to give us some fun fighting style for tommy, they didn't care. And why would they? its a game after all, and its fun sprinting and ''loading'' a punch, and then releasing it on a NPC.

I've no complaints regarding the fighting styles, since I've hardly played the game using them over shooting, it's pretty much more satisfying for me than fighting

Is it considered a flaw though? It's hardly asif he is running around slapping enemies instead of punching them.

I'd assume that the reason the fighting styles in III/VC are the same is because VC was originally meant to be an extension pack for III but it spiralled into a new game completely.

Tommy should at least have a street fighting style. I mean I know R* made the game in 2002, and I know they are known to do such a perfunctory job on their video games at times. But Tommy spent 15 years in jail. So he should be a hardcore street fighter.

What does prison have to do with it? According to the wikipedia for his character he was originally on death row, but due to Forelli influences he was released after 15 years. Is anyone in prison really gonna f*ck with somebody dubbed "The Harwood Butcher" - with a nickname like that it's obvious that the Harwood Massacre would be a well known event and that would most likely steer people away from him.

Even so, what sort of fight style is he meant to attain from prison? I can't say I've been to prison myself, but the majority of prison murders I've heard of and read about have mostly been with shanks/improvised knives, what's Tommy meant to do, carry a filed down toothbrush around Vice City to stab people with?

I imagine tommy fighting with Victor's style, that kick feels really off.

I don't know about that one, guy's got a mean shanking maneuver. with the default knife he stabs guts like nobody's business and as an amateur katana swordsman he's pretty damn good.

also let's not forget about his mighty fist, just running into your target and tapping the attack button gives speeds that muhammad ali would be jealous of

I dont think that fist will be used much, afterall there are tons of guns and melee weapons.

Well, Vice City's right hand punch was the best animation of all GTA titles. I remember cops and most of the peds could only do this move and Tommy had those different punches with left hand and I used to spend a lot of time practising that very right hand punch and there wasn't even a mod which would remove those extra anims and make Tommy fight exactly like peds do
