Will old-gen multiplayer die out when new-gen GTA 5 come out?

WIth GTA 5 and Online coming out to the Xbox One/PS4 this November, there will be players who will migrate to the new servers. But, what will happen to the current servers on the 360/PS3? Will they die out? How long do you think til the old-gen servers become extinct?

There will be a few pockets of players trying to keep it alive, but it will eventually go the way of GTAIV's servers; a breeding ground for trolls, modders and DNS hackers.

It won't die out right away. Most people still don't have next gen consoles. I give it another 3 years before it starts dying out.

It will eventually, but not immediately.

The Xbone and PS4 still aren't the standard home gaming platform - could even take another year or even two and by then most people wont care.

They are already extinct. R* really handled GTA V in all the wrong ways and killed it.

There isn't anything remotely true about that statement.

GrandTheftRobbo

Not gonna lie I got my ps4 played some games and got used to it, then after a few weeks I turned on my ps3 and could not play it for more than 10 minutes lol the controller feels weird and there is a big difference in graphics... but anyway this is what's going to happen to these last gen consoles, not immediately but within maybe within 2 years

there were 32.5 million copies of GTA V sold on ps3/360 as of February.

total next gen consoles sold to date is a bit over 15.5 million^ . (*10 million ps4 sales to date, 5 million xb1 sales up till april, i couldn't find any more up to date xb1 sales figures)

It's going to take a LONG time for next gen GTA to outsell current gen, if it ever does (which i doubt)

It will. It'll be around for 5+ years, it's just going to take a while before it's commonplace as you said.

It just hasn't been exciting enough for everyone to run out and grab one, but consumers will pick them up over the next few years.

This game will look a little better on Xb1/PS4 and amazing on PC, but the additional game content will be better. I'm talking about the little details like sharks and other animals added to online not dlc's. This game isn't done on last gen consoles and I expect a long life on current gen. That's my two cents anyway.

that doesnt matter at all, 90% of the people who bought the game dont ever play it online and 90% of those that do never play it anymore at all anyway. Ive been in about 10 different crews cause ive played since release and everyone ive ever played with has quit playing and the crews die cause the game is buggy and they cant fix it, plus there is never any new content thats worth a sh*t and nothing at all to do if you dont like the pvp combat part of the game which is the only thing I do anymore cause its the only halfway fun thing there is to do. If there was any other game I had or was interested in i wouldve quit playing about 8 months ago like everyone else who bought it on release day but i keep hoping they will fix it, sadly they keep f*cking it up worse. Im waiting to see if they fix/improve things for the next gen and if its still as f*cked up as it is now I wont be buying it, but most of the problems currently are due to hardware limitations and since they are spending the majority of their man hours working on the new version instead of fixing/balancing what they can in this one I can only conclude that support for this one will cease shortly after release of the new version and Im hopeful they can get them fixed and then get on with providing worthwhile DLC on the new consoles, or even make something for sale like the lost and the damned and the ballad of gay tony, otherwise this game is pretty much dead and boring as sh*t unless youre a modder or just bought it.

I am just guesstimating, i couldnt find actual numbers for current amount of people who play gta online cause its peer to peer and there arent any actual game servers people play on that can track such things. i would think the cloud servers for save data could do so but i wasnt able to find any info on it, but rest assured its nowhere f*cking close to 35 million. I get put in lobbies with lots of the same people all the time, and they arent my friends or crew, thats cause there isnt very many people playing this game online. Id guess around 25000 worldwide maybe? if that. look at battlefield 4, they sold 7 million copies and less than 200,000 still play it, lol! Most people bought gta5 for the single player and never play it online.

As for meeting up with the same guys regularly - the game tries to match you with players who are:

- similar rank

- similar mental state

- low latency to you

- compatible network connection (e.g. strict can't play with other stricts)

- friends / crew

- preferred players (if you use it)

So it's not surprising you meet up with the same people. For me I don't run in to the same people, I just keep coming back to another almost full lobby time after time. Also, please for the love of god, press enter occasionally.

It's already reaching a bad point, IMO.

All I have been able to find every night for the past two weeks are Rooftop Rumble nuts. When I actually find someone that wants to play another mission, they just troll and fail it on purpose.

It's gotten to the point where I'm ready to just sell my damn PS3 and wait until January.

Old gen will be essentially be dead by spring 2015. The current gen release is just going to split a player base that's already dwindled overtime. They'll probably stabilize the player base in the short term by releasing heists (sometime shortly before or shortly after the releases on PS4/Xbox One). A few months after that the player base will begin to decline again.

those things never happen though. Matchmaking system in this game doesnt work worth a f*ck. im rank 270 on both my characters and ill often end up in a lobby full of lvl 60 and under players, my mental stat resets to white quite often and ive been white with mostly reds and also ive been red with mostly whites, ive played at all times of the day/night and been paired with uk/french/spanish/german/austrailans, ive played with a nat type 2 and nat type 1 and still get the same people.

Granted there are quite a lot of them and i dont remember them all but i do see people ive previously encountered quite often when we arent friends/crew and i have no friends/crew in the session so there shouldnt be anything linking us specifically given that none of the stuff you mentioned works properly. maybe it works 10% of the time and thats when i see same people, hard to say, but if 35million people were playing this game youd never see anyone twice, ever, plus at the rate i meet new players and they play for a while and then quit playing, which is everyone damn near.

theres only one guy i played with at release that still plays, so there just simply cannot be that many people playing it.
