[SA]Mipmapping Problems

I posted this on the DDS2TXD thread but no one replied so im posting it here.

 

So basically i extracted every single .txd archive from gta3.img, used riquenunes program to unpack the textures and convert them all to .dds compressed and mipmapped with DXT5 in their respective folders. Then i used DDS2TXD to recreate the .txd files, and loaded them using Modloader.

 

So you might be thinking:

Oh nice!Now your entire game is mipmapped!That's cool right?

These are not the usual "Map Holes", they behave different as if they render-in when you get close, also take a look at the buildings in SF.

This might be cruel and idiotic, but try doing mipmaps with no compression at all.

I know SA supports DXT5, but still...with Mod Loader, the 4GB gta3.img limit is no more a concern for us :)

In a way or another, big txd files (not compressed) tends to crash when they are getting loaded

(for me at least, never got into looking what's the problem, maybe it's a RW issue, not sure).

Nah, my upload speed is crap it would take several hours to upload it or even an entire day (no joke). I used DDS2TXD and this program by riquenunes, and i did exactly what he said in that post.

Even if i remove the draw distance mod and every other cleo and asi mod the problem still persists., so it's not what's causing it.

 

DXT5 compressed textures without alpha channel. Why not DXT1?

The program just compresses everything to DXT5 , it's stupid i know, but i can't do anything about it.

I'm not forcing, I'm suggesting, totally different, he might not known about the existence of such tool. And if he does and don't use I'd like to know why and that's explicitly noted on the bottom of the post. Why to use buggy methods when there are better and non-buggy methods?

Please continue with proper arguments.

sure, they are free to use whatever they want, but as I said I suggested a better tool, not forced him to do anything.

If you're mad about your friend in that other topic, I'm sorry, I cannot do much since I was CLEARLY being sarcastic there.

 

oh, and don't believe the other tools/methods over there are inferior? Pick up the train!

  • Current img tools don't know there shouldn't be no empty block in the archive and all cd entries should be in the same order as the files, rebuilding (annoying) might fix, but don't be sure since as I just said those tools didn't know about those conditions
  • Binary IPLs aren't handled properly by current img tools, breaking save games
  • Game dont handle properly oversized img/sound pak files, how sad?
  • In the audio side, SAAT does not update all the necessary data and so bugs the game sounds when bank/sounds are replaced with bigger one.
  • Can your tools do th

Are you happy reinstalling your game when it breaks, having trouble to uninstall mods, having 10 game installs, copying data lines from readme files (or even trying to figure out lines from others cfg), and so on? No, no need to answer because you clearly is.

The modders these days. Not like back in '03-'07 or so. Rude, harsh, idiotic, selfish, with hugely inflated self-esteem. And posting childish trololo's and "oh look it's funny" memes (well they're funny for a 14-year old chumps alright).

These modders make something, and think all of the others members of the community owe them something, think they've started a religion by releasing a freaking mod for a GTA-game. I can understand harsh replies to 11-year old kiddies running into topics in the ModShowroom section with stupidic suggestions. But not like this.

The mod loader is bullsh*t, cr*p, whatever you call it. There were reasons why some folks much more intelligent, dedicated, and certainly more mature and psychologically grown-up, haven't released something like this a long, long time ago. Alexander Blade, Barton Waterduck, and many other nicknames, which made much more, than some (not all, but still) modern-day marmoset-monkey modders.

I didn't ever use Mod Loader, but from now on, I surely won't in the future. Most don't give a damn about the authors' attitude (yes, that's concerning not only Link), but I do. Because it rips out of the friendly community, that once lived here in these forums.

I'm sure you don't care. And that's a problem too - modders don't care. But you won't even understand it, and that's another problem.

Whatever. You can ban me away for flame if you want to, but I'm really pissed of by sh*t like in this topic. It's all over GTA-modding.

That riquenunes little program makes some mistakes I don't like :

 

1) Compress everything to DXT5 (unnecessary...a big waste of space disk and load time).

 

2) It uses the newest nVidia texture tool for DDS conversion...which is crappy ! ! ! ----> cause it changes some pixels of alpha-channel according to pixel values of rgb channel...which is just stupid

 

(the nVidia tool's author tried to justify that, but I still think it's stupid).

 

 

I did a DOS-like batch script that runs some free internet image-conversion tools and an old nVidia tool (and of course it still makes use of TXD workshop for extracting textures, just like riquenunes tool does).

 

Give-me some time to prepare a package of those tools...and upload it at some place. It will just take one whole night to covert all your gta textures :blink: (yeah...it's very slow...blame TXD workshop).

EDIT.: During gameplay don't forget to force Texture LOD bias of your graphic card to a very negative number...cause GTA has a "stupid" (a need to improve my vocabulary) way to show mipmapped textures. Only two steps away from the object and it goes to first mipmap level....more 3 steps -> second level....So...the visual impact is hard (most noticeable over HQ trees).

 

EDIT2 : You will want to change some flags of object's definition in IDE files....in order to "minimize" alpha vanishing as you step away (again...most visible on HQ trees...or objects that use lots of layered alpha textures).

 

Those are some Disadvantages of using Mipmapped textures....but the really nice and clean look...whithout all those noises caused by non-mipmapped texture... is a big advantage of using mipmaps (and of course, your graphic card workload will reduce - but vga memory usage will increase a little ).

I completly agree with you (I'm serious, I'm not being sarcastic), you made great points, unlike the other guys.

The good ol' modders probably didn't do a tool like that because not much as really known about the game at the time (as I pointed many flaws in img tools on my post) or because they were conformed, either way, they were great.

I'm not being rude, well, actually I'm, but the situation led me to it. Check all my posts in this forum (just go to my profile), I'm not like what you described.

 

Still, I think you should try Mod Loader, both because it's awesome and because it's less buggy than other ways around.

But fine, if you don't want, who am I to say you have to? Just a suggestion.

I am not an expert but basically this is what mipmapping does:

It smooths out the textures depending on how far or close you are to them, just like in real life, when you are close to something you see more detail and when you are far you see less detail.But you need to make sure to have anisotropic filtering set to 16x or higher, otherwise all textures will be blurry.

 

A lot of textures in San Andreas are missing mipmaps wich makes them look bad(roads for example), mipmapping the whole game results in a much smoother visual.

I had this problem also when I was mipmapping RoSa. I seemed to have fixed the problem by using a .exe with the LargeAddressAware flag set.

I can PM you this .exe tonight ..

 

But I think this tool does the same thing.

Yeah i tried the .exe with LargeAdressAware flag enabled some time ago, but it didn't solve the problem. I will try the files Markuza97 provided and see if that fixes it tomorrow.
