The women of GTA V

I was replying to the overall concept of singling out the treatment of women in GTA V and being upset about it only, while ignoring the fact that the opposite gender (and other races/religions/cultures) are treated just as bad, if not worse in some areas. The point I'm making has been made several times over in the thread anyway, though. GTA doesn't focus on one group only and decides to have a grudge. It targets everyone and everything equally.

Actually most combat training view it as a toss at that distance, shooter will most likely suffer fatal wounds. There's a reason most law enforcement is clear to fire if an attacker with knife or similar is still approaching past 10m radius. One would prefer the same even for unarmed hostiles, if holding any firearm.

And for future reference, we don't know who killed Debra. It could have been Floyd with the knife after he learned she was cheating him with Bob. Or Floyd could have just ran up to her, at which point Debra shot him in self defense, whereas Trevor then jumped up and killed her as she was aiming at Floyd. Given Trevor's psychotic nature and unpredictable movements, yes, he could have killed them both, why not? Or would it be more fair that someone who has escaped the FIB on open plains (intro), dealt with all his rivals and a farm full of armed people over the meth monopoly, entered a weapons cargo plane (belonging to the government with armed militia on board) with a f*cking crop duster plane, should be killed in a confined space by some amateur who has been "instructed to use a gun" by her lover?

First of all, I'm not trolling. I don't 'sow discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response. or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion'. Second, yes, what you're saying is possible. Debra could indeed have shot Floyd as he rushed her and then Trevor could have whacked her. Having studied a variety of films at university, I learned about the open ended kind of narrative, in which the viewer is left to decide what happened behind the scenes. I say either scenario you proposed could have happened, but, apparently R* likes to leave truth in the eye of the beholder sometimes.

It's sad when posters are accused of "having a toxic agenda" or jumping on the "feminist bandwagon". Even worse is hoping that the mistreatment, which I don't find to be TOO big a deal with this series, doesn't lead to people ruining it.

Anyway, I agree with the OP, though I had to really try to figure out who a lot of these "characters" were, because outside of Amanda and Tracy, the rest didn't get much focus.

-Paige: Hardly a character. Whatever kind of arc she may have is completely optional.

-Denise (Franklin's Aunt?): Textbook Radical Feminist. Extremely unlikeable which was probably intentional, and becomes completely irrelevant once Franklin leaves the hood.

-Molly: Possibly Anti-Social, Utterly Efficient Assistant. I actually liked her and wished she was the boss rather than Devin.

-Debra: Didn't even remember her.

-Patricia: The lady who's kidnapped and develops Stockholm Syndrome for her captor. She's kind of like Belle from Beauty and the Beast without the intelligence or beauty. I feel kind of bad for her knowing she's probably too afraid to leave Martin, though I can't say I'd be happy if she went back to
Trevor. Even if I thought their "relationship" was kind of adorable.

-Tanisha: Annoying Ex. She was the only female to have anything nice to say to Franklin, even if she kind of put him down a bit to do so. I don't find her as bad as some of the rest, but that's because she wasn't given enough attention (probably for the best.)

Isn't GTA V a stereotypically guys game? in the same way a romcom called '50 ways to get over your ex as a bridesmaid' which has the tagline 'ALL MEN ARE BASTARDS!' is for women?

 

The chick flick would be super sexist towards men! but it wouldn't be called that at all. So calling GTA misogynistic because it doesn't have a strong independent woman is a bit much.

She's a spoof on those crazy exercise ladies in their 40s (I'm guessing) who are obsessed with staying young. She's very similar to Michael, minus the heists, guns, and excessive money.

In a few ways, she reminds me a bit of Amanda as well. Still annoying, though.

Not going to lie I did not completely read every single post made on this thread although it did inspire me to make an account on this forum so you got my attention.

 

Now I was brought up with my brother by a single mother who got no child support from a man making six figures, oh and she also got her masters while raising us and keeping the books on my dad's company and not one of those things I could be able to manage on my own because women are strong.

 

Being rather privileged I find myself compelled to give the bartender at my bar who is in my opinion way out of my league a $500 tip of Fridays then I book a $500 hotel room and me and this other girl spend another $1,000 each gambling and a few drinks to say the least.

 

Every girl I have slept with since I bought my first car I literally gave them a car and not just any car because I only drive BMWs and it is a good excuse to my trustee to get a new one even though it would not cost as much to trade it in I do not think.

 

You might ask with all this money would you go to a strip club and the honest answer is yes to give these lovely girls who may be struggling some of what I have enough of but you are talking to a guy who wears Prada and D&G pair of sunglasses and if all his friends did not tell him how pretentious he looked wearing a suit everyday would probably still be doing that but the fact of the matter is I am scared. I want to help but I am scared.

 

How manly is that for you GTA haters and misogynistic. As far as violence goes it might have played a role where I shot someone nine times and you probably are like the police and though I tried to kill him but it was self defense and I gave him clear warning and I knew that many bullets from the kind of gun I selected would take to kill somebody if shot properly. Regardless that is another debate the whole thing about GTA and violence so let me keep this on course.

 

Believe it or not when I drive around in GTA V I look for a select few kinds of people, thieves and that sort of stuff because that is who I want to give a taste of their own medicine and I always return the loot. In fact even in Red Dead Redemption when the coach was broken down at the side of the road and the fair lady pleading for help I knew it was always going to be a set up but I liked to believe it was not her idea she was a victim and I was going to free her from the oppression of those bandits and I let her go every time.

 

Back to this bartender why do I give her so much money, well because I think she deserves it and I know she has a boyfriend but she probably worked at least 7 if not 10 times as many hours that week compared to me and definitely not making as much per hour so I think it is only fair for the pleasure of her gracing me with the beauty she presents. You know what I was working to something more romantic but I lost it. I think the final point for that topic is even if she would sleep with me I would probably turn her down because I would feel like it was for the money. The girl I take to the casino is an entirely different story though but regardless.

 

I have played and beat every GTA game from GTA III to GTA V, not 100% beat but did the story mode and I would buy the next one. It is entertainment and despite the fact that some things I do not agree with it is something I like to do. The stress and all that just gets my engines reeving like I have been 250km/h and hit the limiter for that car but I was ready to go all in, I think the limiter worked rather well as it was winter. That is one of the rare things that gives me the desire for adventure and adrenaline and to be honest I think GTA is safer then my other option for bliss according to North American standards that is why I plan on picking my next BMW up in Germany and get that out of my system. As much as I love cars I would never clean one though and believe it or not but the car I bought in April 2013 I have washed once myself.

 

Now how does a 23 year old kid afford such luxuries well the fact is not all men are like me but none of the ones I am thinking of have even played GTA for a second but lucky for me they either died or went bankrupt because I sued them, including my very own father and find it my personal responsibility to try and make every woman's life that I come across a little easier then my mother and grandmother had to put up with. At least I could be a sign of hope.

 

Now women do scare me more then men can, whether they are police officers and relating this back to GTA that billionaire's lawyer probably more then the women who could murder me with her bare hands because I know I am far to out there to argue with someone who is focused and concentrated and dedicated although I strive to be I fall way short of that so I know I would loose.

 

Well, now you probably think not every woman is a police officer or high price lawyer and that is true but how many men are murderers and what ever else the men of GTA present, the women in GTA would probably not be there by choice if they had a reasonable other option and if they in fact did have another option I am of the strong believe they would stay and provide care for their man in his times of sorrow, historically this has not worked for me but I have faith in women that they are better then that.

 

The whole GTA theme in my opinion does not bring out the best in any case for example Michael was talked about quite some bit and to be honest he might of got off a little easy but who has not, I know I have. Despite the fact he was sleeping with prostitutes and she was sleeping with athletes that does not say anything negative about either gender to me as human nature will tempt them for something they might be excited about and both genders can loose their cool and it is just a mess for anyone.

 

You know I had this girlfriend we dated for five years and she goes on this four week summer trip then ignores me for three months and pushes me aside and she actually said "it is not you it is me" and that drove me nuts because I though she just needed some room to breath or something so I bought her an engagement ring that I have to this day but little did I know that was that right then and there. Mind you I was not entirely faithful though our relationship especially because I was in charge of training all these girls every peak season about how to pull high pressure sales tactics or just dirty moves of customers of this shoe store so I got their trust and might have taken a bit of advantage of the situation. In my defense management was rooting for me and they knew they where all getting canned soon regardless so there was nothing I could have done to help them anyway.

 

Well I feel like I made some valid points both for and against men and women equally. In conclusion I would like to end with this point that Rock Star is not showing either gender equally. I hate to say it but a man who would go destroy another man's house because that man slept with his wife just seems too macho if not douche bag of a thing to do like it was kind of his fault for being so distant and whatnot at least that is what it felt like when I figured out what that one girl was doing to me.

 

You know why I would even bother giving a girl who total made me fee crushed, weak and pathetic by breaking up with me a car in the 40,000 to 60,000 range is because I felt like I owed them more then they got out of me. Sex aside I never clean or cook or do much besides drink scotch all day and have lunch with clients that I hired my friend to be my on call driver because it was not safe me driving at 11 o clock in the morning. Plus even though this might relatively egotistical of me I like the fact that my legacy would comfort her for years to come and hopefully make her feel special to at least one guy on this plant.

 

Let us not forget the fact that I had every opportunity handed to me on a silver plate I still was not able to get a degree in post secondary but I know more women who graduated then actually attended. I have no problem admitting I am a spoiled, lackadaisical and for the most part inept brat, women give me hope for the future of this world. That there is somebody who actually will do something about a problem and they are more then likely going to convince myself especially to support them and if money is the only thing they actually need from me by all means you can have it because you are going to matter to somebody someday if not already. It makes me feel pathetic if I think a girl is sleeping with me for my money because I know if they looked really close to them they could find somebody with a lot more to offer then I could.

 

As my final point I would like you to consider what happens if you are playing Grand Theft Auto and you get shot, stabbed or run over with a semi in excess, you re-spawn at the hospital so how can you claim you are doing anything worse to those NPCs then maybe giving them a small medical bill and wasting six hours of their time recovering. I have a strong believe that nobody has ever died in Grand Theft Auto because death does not exist. I know many people might not see it that way but that is all.

PS: I did get charged for shooting that kid in grade 9 and I did my two years probation, just thought I would let you know before you called the police. I guess the fact that I reloaded after missing two shots and kept shooting was a sign of intent but in my defense he was still standing and I felt threatened. Turns out I was right he survived.

 

EDIT: I just have to tell you that Grand Theft Auto series probably saved somebodies life at least if not more because that is where I first hand experienced the effects of alcohol on your motor vehicle capabilities, good thing I learned that before I even got my license since I was brought up playing Grand Theft Auto from a relatively young age.

One thing that limits the types of female and male characters that can be created in the GTA V World, Is that babies and children do not exist, therefore no new mothers, no new fathers, no mums and dads caring for their children, caring for a young family, no schools, daycare workers, and no schoolteachers. I'm 99.9% certain no NPC even speaks of the existence of a child at home they care for.

Yep, it's happened. Now every form of media also has to have a "token woman" to show they're not misogynistic. Because obviously when writing fiction, appeasing peoples sensibilities is the first thing that should come into mind.

 

I don't care if they down-right torture every f*cking woman to death as long as it's entertaining. There's a lot more f*cked up things in fictional stories than "oh my god, they didn't add the compulsory one person with a certain politically correct personality to fit every single class/race/religion/group we can think of".

I think to make people happy there needs to be a mix of a realistic rather than made of boobs Lara croft, Ellie from the Last of Us, Ripley from Alien and the woman from Mad Max Fury Road, does things better than any man too. She can't wear make up or wear typically feminine clothes. She won't be seen as stereotypical then.

 

There's girls like Tracey in the UK. We like to copy US culture now and then so I'm guessing Tracey is quite realistic. Amanda shouts like a realistic woman and is super, SUPER bitchy which is also quite realistic. Steroetypical is olive oyl from Popeye. Mrs Madrazzo and Maude are good, that prick Karen is ok too.
