Does Paleto Bay need a runway?

It's not really that necessary at all. If you drive down to the Police station after spawning, a helicopter will spawn without fail. Just fly to Grapeseed or SS Airfield. It takes no time at all, and keeps the miscreants who won't make the effort of travelling down at Eclipse Towers where they belong.

What Paleto Bay needs is a spawning point for planes delivered by Pegasus, preferably at the beach.

 

Overall, the map in GTA V is ridiculously stupid since there are three free airports (Zancudo is not counted since its a very hostile place and Pegasus dont deliver there) and two of those airports are virtually next to each other (Sandy Shores and Grapeseed).

 

If Paleto Bay gets 10 vehicle garages and a spawning point for planes delivered by Pegasus then a lot more people would move there. If thats a good thing or a bad thing probably depends if one already resides there, those people who are already there seem to not like anything that will improve the attractibility for players to move there.

Now you mention it, there are several apartments with helipads on them. It would be great to be able to use them (cue the incoming "but you can't because there'd be more than one person using it" rubbish.)

But then that'd be more incentive for people to move to PB. And surely Rockstar wants to keep the majority of people in the big city?

That alone means that they'll never become redundant. Helicopters in GTA V (with exception of the Cargobob at least) are fairly fast and can keep up with any of the non-modern airplanes in the game. The other ones (luxor, miljet, etc.) can carry more players and are faster but that's it. They're not armed, they can't land everywhere (or do so quickly and safely) and they're larger. Which not only makes them easier to hit, but also easier to hit* things with.

 

If the game world was essentially a gigantic, flat landmass with all the interiors and such being underground with entrances above ground, then maybe helicopters could become redundant, because then airplanes COULD land everywhere. And even if that was a possibility, there's another thing that choppers excel at.

Transport of people at medium distances! At a short distance you can take a ground vehicle or even run if it's really close by. If you're miles away from your destination a modern airplane comes in handy. But at medium distances a chopper is great because, well, it's right in between those two! Not to mention the fact that with the landing capability, it can not only be used for insertion, but extraction as well!

I vote yes. It doesn't even need a proper runway. Just have it spawn on the beach, and leave it from there. Paleto also needs a convenience store. There's already one there.

I'm actually pretty surprised that people want ANY runway anywhere at all. I can't remember ever landing any of the planes that I fly. I always shoot straight up, bail out, and parachute down to my target.

while this is usually my main use for planes as well

having more places for pegasus to deliver your vehicles would be awesome

need to get halfway across the map? (especially when out in the middle of nowhere)

just have a plane delivered to some open stretch of road/desert/beach nearby and fly off to wherever it is you're going

 

to me planes are mainly a way of long distance transportation

and as it is right now planes often don't serve any real purpose, usually the delivery point is so far away that in the end, I spend more time driving to the plane than I actually save by flying.
