Posted September 4, 2014 Share Posted September 4, 2014 (edited) Few horror writers/directors seem to truly "know" horror these days, but Leigh Whannell and James Wan are definitely on point. They've taken the Horror 101 rulebook, studied it, and studied it again. They've taken antiquated filming and story-telling techniques and made them relevant again. They're re-telling the classic American haunting whilst adding their own mark on the genre with unique concepts such as astral-projection and ventriloquist dolls running amok. Ballsy move. They're gradually shying away from cheap scare tactics (although, let's be honest, who doesn't appreciate a cheap scare?!) and creating masterful homages to old school horror movies. They favour the two key elements required for any successful horror movie; atmosphere and suspense; and they have a real knack for getting under your skin and into your head. Each scene is masterfully shot to create suspense and sheer TERROR in equal measure. The set pieces are haunting and compliment the story, cinematography, and create the atmosphere. Man, these guys just get it! The most prominent thing to note about their collaborations is that their stories have very relatable human elements, and that personally, only serves to heighten the terror. Horror writers/directors, grab a pad and take notes. These dudes are setting the standard! I'm just hoping the Annabelle sequel will throw something new at us. Although, if it doesn't we'll forgive them as neither of them have played much of a creative role in the film. Whannell, I don't even think wrote it, and Wan is merely producer. As for GTA, I'm up for a decent sesh so long as we head in with a plan. We always tend to just wing it and get fed up. It'd be a nice change to head offline on a high. Let's chuck some ideas into the think tank? I'd make some suggestions now but I'm ready to crash. The mind is willing, but the body is weak, and when the body says it's bed time, I daren't protest. LeRay0409 Posted September 5, 2014 Share Posted September 5, 2014 (edited) Oh yes, it had me on the edge of my seat with me not wanting to take my eyes off the tv whilst wanting to not keep watching with knowing some sh*t's going to go down. That's what movies don't have anymore and it's about time people started taking notes from other producers and writers like you have said. I have watched many "scary" films this year and this is the only one to make me jump and feel actually terrified. Greatly done and directed/produced. But yes I am also hoping the sequel will show us something new, it's going to be based around a doll and the last thing I want to see is something relating to chuckie.. Anyway onto GTA Idea's, Well I was thinking we could mess around on some tractors and cause some terror, then maybe do some group activities, Parachuting, or maybe capture the brief case.
