I've just put the ssd in the link into my ps3. I've got a ps4 as well. I'll just move the ssd into the ps4 when gta v comes out for the new consoles.

Yeah it's knocked 38 seconds off the time it takes to load into gta:online. :) I've also noticed less lag in game and I spend less time in loading screens.

facking sweet, well worth it then id say, half your time playing is spent loading, especially since half the time it loads a session trying to join a friend or invite it fails and you gotta start over. i didnt think it made that much of a difference, surprised the ps3 even supports a SSD to be honest, haha! Wished I had known that a year ago, id have done it for sure. i asked around and everyone said it didnt make much difference and it was mostly DVD drive causing the long load times, buncha f*cking morons, i shoulda known better, GRRRR! oh well, PC versions coming soon enough and then my ps3 is gonna be nothing more than a bluray player, lol! Still i could get a 60gig SSD for about 50 bucks and have it in 2 days. . . how long did the game install take?

About 15 mins to install from the disk + however long downloading updates depending on your connection.

what ps3 version you have? i have a 60 gig old fat and a new super slim red one. I actually had one of these on order for my PC but forgot to get a size adapter tray to mount it in so just for sh*ts and gigs i put it in the old fat one and it does work better, but not near the loading time gains i was hoping for, they are less, but barely, and my game still lags bad when modders are in the session. do the new ones have any better/faster hardware? a faster disc drive at all or anything hardware wise thats faster? or is it just the same sh*t shrunk in size do you know? wonder if it would have any extra benefit in the new one, if for example they can utilize more HD speed with the tech available at that time or if they simply used old sh*t like in the first ones, know what i mean?

Standard slim model. All the ps3 models have 512mb of ram. I've had lag on occasion when playing gta:online on my slim ps3 before upgrading to ssd. Maybe the fat ps3's are just too old to make use of the faster drives. I'm pretty sure the blu-ray drives are the same speed throughout all ps3 models so that's unlikely to make a difference in load times.

Just to ask but what sort of load times were you getting with the hdd and how much time are you saving whilst using ssd?

Also what sort of internet connection do you have? I have 70mb fibre optic and the line quality is A rated. I also have NAT type 2.

UPDATE:

I've just been looking at specs for the ps3 models and it turns out that whilst the clock speed of the cell processor is the same in all the ps3 models the slims processors can be overclocked by game devs so that games will run smoother. That can't be done in the fat models as it can cause the consoles to overheat.

i think my super slim runs hotter than my fat one honestly, lol! way less airflow too. Im not quite sure but only 5-10 seconds diff maybe? never timed it, it takes what feels like forever, 5 minutes on initial storymode loading and 2-3 when swapping sessions I always get back after everyone else cuase i hear them talking and shooting each other, lol, but it did install much much quicker. did the 8gig then the updates, then i walked away and came back and it was installing another 2 gig of something, never did that the first time on either console nor the second time on the slim. not sure what it was. I have 30 meg fiber up/down, nat2 and ive tried dmz opening ports, plugging right into the wall and it doesnt seem to make much difference, i get more lag the more i switch sessions and especially if it fails to load when attempting to join a friend or a job invite and it started already and you opt not to spectate, also after a mission if people vote on different things its lags loading back into the session always but if everyone votes the same or i press O and quit it wont lag, both consoles do this, nothing wrong with my internet. They both used to freeze from patch 1.10-1.13 which fixed it and started causing lag instead, never lagged before that. i formated the slim during hte freezing problems cause 1.12 froze every 5 minutes and was unplayable but the format did not good, when i downloaded 1.13 no more freezing til 1.16 but its only happened rarely now. the fat one would freeze for a second and then continue sometimes when driving fast but it doesnt do that anymore with the SSD, still lags though. Especially when cheathing modders are f*cking with the game, the road textures dont load and buildings pop in and out of existence even when sitting still and going slow, its like im stuck in slo motion, very annoying.

just for gigs i put it in the slim but what a piece of sh*t, the fat one formatted in about 20 seconds and i was off to the races, i been f*cking with this slim for 2 hours now and it wont format, it says it wants an update which i downloaded and put on a usb drive and using safe mode tried to format. It started and was installing but now i got a black screen and its been at least 30 minutes, im about to unplug the f*cker and put the ssd back in the fat and see what happens, lol! not impressed at all with this super slim. it seems the standard slim ones have the least problems out of everyone ive talked to so far.

Maybe the super slim ps3's don't like ssd's. It didn't take long putting the software back on my slim ps3 after changing to ssd. It just seems that companies start by releasing a product then they improve the performance and quality with an upgraded model and after that they release a budget version and the quality goes to pot. It's almost funny though that an ssd works better in your old fat ps3 compared to your far newer super slim. It does seem rather weird though that your only saving up to 10 seconds on ssd compared to when you were using hdd. It doesn't make sense that I'm saving nearly 40 seconds on a slim console compared to your fat and super slim consoles. I can understand the slim being faster than the fat model but the super slim surely should be quicker than the normal slim model.

Also on the aspect of update 1.16. I think the lag is a fairly widespread problem. I've had the very occasional bit of lag since the update but nothing as bad as you seem to have been having.

i finally got it to install, not sure what happened the first time, maybe cause i pulled it out of the fat and it had ps3 data on it already and it got confused, maybe shouldve formatted it before i stuck it in the next one, lol!

THats what i figured too, it might have a faster HD controller or something and be able to take advantage of more of the ssds speed capabilities than the fat that was made before there ever were ssds, haha!

I never clocked it so im only guess, i could be off a lot, but gonna check the slim here in a minute as soon as i get it DMZed on my network, it was taking way longer but i dont have the ports open correctly and I shut upnp off. trying a few different setups including a couple different routers, and even no router, to see if there is any change, i can almost never hear people talking anymore. i hear them on the loadin screen sometimes and then will only hear like one guy when the job starts, seems to be getting worse but i had ports open and forwarded, now im gonna see what dmz does, hope it helps. ive had the lag since 1.13, ever increasing, 1.16 fixed it a little at first, it used to be much worse for me but its kinda getting worse again now but im hopeing thats due to the ports not being open, internet speeds still show awesome, no packet loss, very odd. Some of it might be script kiddies trying to DDoS me or something, i get unknown connection errors a lot when im pwning like 4 people at once, lol! damn pussy cheaters anyway, got no skills so they use god mode and kick people out of sessions. super fast in invite only by myself but once i start adding more players if there are explosions or lots of people close together shooting and tons of cops and stuff it just lags the f*ck out on both consoles and i can test my internet at the same time and its sill showing perfect on the tests, the game hardly takes any bandwith so i still get super fast speeds while the games laggin so its not my network slowing down.

i guess it loads quite a bit faster than without the SSD, i notice it more after i put the original hd back in one of my systems and tried it again. I wonder how the digital version does on an SSD? i wonder if the disc version is slowing it down significantly or not.

I would think the digital version loads faster as the game will load the map from the hdd/ssd. If you own the disc version the console takes longer as it's has to read the disc.

yea, but how much? does anyone know the disc read speed vs the SSD read speed? obviously its not as fast as possible as SSDs didnt even exist when the ps3 came out, surprised they even work better at all to be honest, im curious as to actual benchmark numbers though.

To be perfectly honest I'm not really sure. I looked up disc vs digital gta v games and whilst the game ran smoother on the digital copy the game actually had more in-game detail on the disc version.

yea i dont know, it doesnt help gameplay at all, still pretty slow and still loads slow when changing sessions, i think thats just bad code causing a memory leak or something, 256meg of ram aint much to work with, my f*cking gaming mouse for my PC has more than that, haha! Does the ps3 slow down when it gets hot? my internet is 30 meg fiber up/down and no problems elsewhere but it seems like the whole console slows down, does the processor derate when its warm? i got 2 f*cking fans blowing on the bitch and short of putting it in the freezer or something theres nothing i can do to make it run cooler, its only 70 in my house. how does everyone not have that problem? i have the old fat and the new super slim, neither of which run its fan at full speed ever, so maybe its not even that hot, i dont know. is the first regular slim version better? i took my fat apart and cleaned it and redid the thermal paste, but it didnt change anything, does seem to run cooler than before but still same lagging slow problem. cant wait for pc version, lol

You don't seem to be having much luck. My slim ps3 doesn't slow down with the ssd at all.

mines the super slim though, i wonder if thats the difference and the middle one is better for some reason. I did hear the super slim had some problems the other ones didnt have and the orignal fat likely has slightly slower disc drive and hard drive which may cause issues 8 years later with a game thats pushing them to their absolute max ability trying to process and run the game and graphics. there are 3 versions i have the one of the two that are on the ends in this pic, a FAT and a Super Slim they call those, and you have the one in the middle if its a Slim model. the only improvement i get on the SSD is initial game storymode load times are less and it fixes the choppy stutter when driving fast on my old fat console but ive still had a couple freezes and once i get online loading session/jobs isnt any faster. Im going back to the original HD and puttin the SSD in my PC as originally intended and im not gonna buy one for the ps3 as its to close to the end of its life and the small improvements really arent worth it to me since ill only be playing it another couple months if that probably. I can wait 15-20 seconds the first time i load the game after turning the console on to save 100$ that i can better spend on something else, lol!
