Let's discuss scripted NPC cop chases

Gnocchi Flip Flops

This is not a complaint thread nor a bashing thread, I simply want to discuss the random NPC cop chases that have been added to the game for atmospheric purposes.

Does anyone else think they should be toned down and made more rare? Just a few minutes ago I was night cruising and whilst waiting behind a Baller at a stoplight, I heard another one of those cop chases come closer and closer. I sighed but before I knew it a cop car rammed the back of my Coquette whilst trying to chase the suspect(s) in the other car. Then they hopped out of their car and started shooting at the cops. Of course that made the traffic go all crazy and almost made me get rear ended again.

I just find it a little excessive and unnecessary. I think there should be less of these chases, because they don't happen as often as you think they do in LA believe me, and I think that the drivers (including the cops) should be much more careful because it becomes tedious to have to insert the health cheat to repair my car every time that does happen.

Does this bother anybody else. I do enjoy cruising in V sometimes but when I go back to IV and realize that my cruise will never be interrupted by a random cop chase, I feel at ease.

Now I realize in V they are there to add to the atmosphere but they just don't do it for me. They're more annoying than anything and not only that, they don't really look that real nor cool.

I think it just fine be it always the same ending when they're in a gunfight. I want it to change it up a bit.

I like it and I don't like it.

In the one hand, the world would feel EXTREMELY dead if they reduced the cop chases, because what the f*ck else is there going on that feels alive? Nothing. At least these chases pepper in a little bit of randomness to the world. Which leads me to my next point...

On the other hand, it's always the same thing. Cop ends up in a complete shoot out, kills the perps and then gets back in the squad car and leaves. I have never seen them make a SINGLE ARREST EVER, in my 300+ hours spent playing V on my 360. Not ONE arrest. Then after the stupid gunfight is over, an ambulance shows up, the paramedics walk over, state how there's nothing they can do, and do the same thing as the cops. Get back in their vehicle and leave.

Come the f*ck on. What an immersion killer. Anyways, I'd still prefer to see these cop chases than to not see them, even as often as they do occur. But what I'd prefer to see is the chase initiations, not just the mid->end sections of them. I want cops patrolling the streets again as they did in every single other f*cking GTA game ever. I want to see them witness a crime and flip their lights on and chase down the NPC.

Maybe on PC...

I hate that it's always the same thing too. I mean I would've liked to actually one day follow a cop chase and see where it ends but you can't do that. I spawns behind you then within a few seconds it's over.

One of my bigger beefs about the game considering that there are no random cop cars just patrolling the street.

I hope something can be done about it on PC. Make police patrols actually spawn, and have the random chases happen less often.

On a side note, I'd like to also mod it so that the police actually uses the Police Buffalo, but that was also a vehicle in TBoGT that only had special appearances. I tried modding it in but nothing works for me with simple text editing, has anyone ever made a successful edit like that?

The only thing that frustrates me about these things is if I'm driving with no intentions to get into a police chase myself and then a squad car rear ends me or whatever and I end up getting shot at by cops just because they ran into me.

That's not true though. It's only ever gotten me a wanted level if I drive into them. If you're parked and they hit you, they won't do anything to you.

I was driving over that bridge going over the storm drain, a cop car understeered into my car, and I got an ugly wanted level. Don't believe me? Get in the way of some cop cars during the next police chase you see and tell me what happens.

Well, that's probably because you were driving. It won't happen when your car is parked.

It's still retarded, though.

Yeah i remember the first time when i witnessed a car chase. I thought it was cool but then another one happened after 30 mins and another one and another one. I dont really pay attention to them anymore. Sure they make world feel more alive but I expected more diverse random events á la Red Dead Redemption.

I don't get them that often, but they always seem to be in the same location, also, if you call the police, wait for them to drive away, and follow them. A random car will be tsrgetfed by the police, and a chase will initiate, its pretty cool and feels much more organic and less scripted IMO

You ran into them. That's how it works. Even in real life.

Im fairly confident RS juuuust managed to squeeze in that bit of chasequence in a decade old console, let alone add more scripts to it.

I hate it and I like it. I hate it because if I try to drive normal they rear end me, which makes me mad and run them over with my car. I like it because it gives me someone to blow up with an RPG.

That's exactly what I'm talking about, except sometimes I don't get a wanted level if they hit me. When I do, I quickly insert the Wanted Level Down cheat because I have no time for that sh*t or for my car getting totaled.

It is true. I was cruising on the highway once and one of those chases popped out of nowhere. I tried to avoid it but got rear ended by an officer and then he started to chase me. Of course that ruined everything and made me want to turn of the game (didn't use cheats at the time).

Are you retarded? Key words - "a squad car rear ends me" - I don't know how him getting rear ended is the same as him running into someone. In court cases, the one who rear ends is at fault and the one who got rear ended didn't hit anyone.

I don't mind it but mix it up a little bit. Show people getting arrested or winning against the cops every now and then. It's unrealistic to think the trio are the only criminals in LS.

Yeah I agree that the biggest problem is the variety. I'd like to see those awesome foot chases from IV return too. Those were fun. Imagine them with shooting. Even better, imagine a foot chase escalating to a car chase.

On the bright side - at least the cops kill other people as well, not only you, like in the III era games.

But if we're not comparing old to new, they are kind of irritating. First time I saw a cop chase I followed the squad car, hoping to see something interesting. For the first time, yes, it was a nice surprise. But it gets boring after a while. It's nice to hear the sirens from a distance, then see some guy in a car speeding away from the cop car in traffic. But the fact that this happens every time... meh.

It's actually just Gta Sa random chases in HD. In the ones in Sa too the cops killed the guys, got back in the cruiser and drove off. The only diff is that the paramedics in Sa were experts, they brought back people from the dead. V medics are novices. f*ck them.

It's hilarious when I'm crossing the street, minding my own business, got Michael in a nice suit, and then I get hit by a police car and go flying through the air. I laugh every time. It's like what the hell dude, the cops are as bad as the criminals!

Unless I get killed, then it's just stupid.

I don't really notice them to be honest, however when I do it's always the gun shots I notice. I always hop out the car and kill the criminals for the cops thinking maybe it'll be like Vice City again, gaining a reward for helping them. But no. Just ends in me getting a chase.

However, I do love the cop chases that happen with like Poppy Mitchel and that lawyer. They're hella exciting ;D

Yeah having a cop car smash into your car, then decide that you are more important than a car full of armed men is a bit annoying

I spawns behind you then within a few seconds it's over. not if you stay close enough, they go from chase/shootout to chase/shootout until both cops die or the remaining cop doesnt get back in the car, ive even seen cop cars explode where they have rammed the vehicle too many times.

I just wish they actually arrested other peds and placed them in their squad car.

like in GTAIV, i used to wait til the cops drove off with the crim, chase after them, blast the crim in the head with the shotgun and watch the cops drive the dead guy around

Something I liked but wasn't 100% related to this. I sometimes take Trevor in his cop outfit, steal a cop car and go cruise around. One time I was on the highway and some car just speed by me to the left and goes to the exit after. I actually starts the sirens and chase the guy (who doesn't stop for hell). When I finally reach back the main city, I end up actually seeing another cop car stopped at a red light and as the car I was chasing an I went by, they actually started their sirens and went after the car too along side me. The issue was not to not hit the other cop car or try not to shoot.

any cop on the street will automatically respond to anything illegal going on. The car I was chasing probably had the "illegal" tag on it so when it went pass it, if I was to go next to a police station, all the cops would probably have reacted and started shooting / getting in their cars to join the pursuit.

..of course it ended up in a shootout. :p

This is one of the things that Watch Dogs has going for it; the world feeling alive. Now I've had it since day one, and I've only seen police chases twice. The first time, the cop rear-ended the criminal, he spun out and the car burst into flames against a wall. The second time, while I drove down the street the cops were already in the process of arresting somebody. I don't doubt that both of these were scripted, but I prefer well-scripted and thought out police chases than a cop ramming my car out of nowhere, then deciding I'm a bigger threat than four armed criminals because they hit me.
