All this stuff going around about the Facebook Messenger app selling information and controlling your phones, in my opinion is 100% bullsh*t. I've just seen a video and he is explaining what the Facebook Messenger app is allowed to do without your permission. He's saying it can turn your camera on whenever it wants, he records all your phone calls, see's your text messages, and it can even do it all when your phone is turned off.

Yeah, because Steve at the Facebook HQ wants to know what some nobody is talking to their best friend about. It's all fake and it's clearly something trying to damage Facebooks reputation and profits. I think if you believe it, then you must be a gullible moron.

The only sensible thing I've heard through all this is that they sell the information so they can get adverts on that fit you. Yes, this happens all the time. When you search for some shows in Google, you will start seeing adverts with shoes on Youtube etc. However it isn't Facebook or anyone else tapping into our phones.

This has all come from some new "features" of the Facebook app. It can now add extra information to your status updates, saying what music you're listening to at the time, or what TV programme you're watching. That in itself was enough for me to revoke the relevant privileges for the app, but people have hyped it up over and over and over again until it's turned into this crap about it basically giving Facebook access to your every thought and desire, and the right to claim your soul.

It's bollocks, but it's grown from something that people should be aware of.

But the thing is, you have to input that information, that you're watching something, or if you're on Spotify you've accepted the terms and signed in with Facebook and allows to share what you've listened to. People nowadays have no opinions on their own and they love to jump on the bandwagon. I don't know if you saw, but Facebook actually published something to defend themselves against this, but where one sheep goes, many will follow.

No, you misunderstand. It uses the microphone to listen to your surroundings and identifies music and TV programmes from that. It's nothing to do with other apps on the phone.

If that was the case, why doesn't anything come up on mine, my music or the TV programs I watch? Because it doesn't do that for me...

I use Facebook to keep in touch with a lot of family and a few friends, I could go without it if I really wanted to.

Anyway, I don't feel forced to use it lately. I've used Messenger ever since it came out for Android, basically. I'm not of fan, or I was never a fan of the way everything looked in the Facebook app. If you don't like it, don't use it, then.

Maybe the update isn't a global one - more selective like many updates of highly used apps are. I can't say for sure because, like I said, I revoked the app privileges to mic and video.

The safest answer for anyone that needs a tin foil hat, like the OP and his illuminati buddies, is to stop using the app and simply send their browser to m.facebook.com

"Problem" solved.

Why would I stop using the app? If you read it carefully I'm defending Facebook.

I've had Facebook messenger for at least 6 months and haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary.

I just explained all the hype that's been blown up about this one feature. Yes, I think the feature is intrusive and completely over the top, but since you can just turn it off I don't think it deserves even a tenth of the publicity that the scaremongering has caused.

And I'm not saying it deserves it to, I'm just saying someone has clearly started it off, and Facebook have replied to it. And I'm saying if people believe what has been said that they are gullible and shouldn't use the app.

As soon as I get me a new phone, I'm not downloading messenger. I hardly use Facebook and it's a nuisance.

No, Facebook aren't controlling your phone or mind, they just want to make money off you by analysing your surroundings and targetting ads.

If there's one single person that uses Facebook that has a life that's worth monitoring, I'd be very f*cking suprised - that said Facebook is basically a menu for inflated egos, to pick and choose from as you wish, so no wonder people feel the utter bullsh*t that happens in their life is worth someone paying attention to.

The moment you sign up and give your email address, phone number, photo, tag your friends, tag your location, list the music, books, films and games you like, plan which events you're going to... as soon as you hand over every detail of your pathetic existence, voluntarily, you lose any right to complain about privacy.

Signatures are dumb anyway.

I've been using the Messenger app since its launch near the end of 2011.

I'm 100% sure the permissions to access your camera, contacts, etc. etc. is for the instant photo send function in the app, and the attachments. When you click the camera icon to send a quick snap, or click the image button to send an image from your gallery, record your voice, it's so it doesn't have to get you to confirm the permission to use it every time.

It's not like Facebook wants to know about your personal things, but their customers do.

For example, you crash your car and it's your fault. Using the information Facebook collected over time, they will maybe report this to the major insurances near you, so they will make you a higher price than others.

Also, some employers buy sensible information from Facebook and similar companies, so they get to know if you tell bad things about them or try to get another job.

It's very dumb to say 'Yeah, because Steve at the Facebook HQ wants to know what some nobody is talking to their best friend about. It's all fake and it's clearly something trying to damage Facebooks reputation and profits. I think if you believe it, then you must be a gullible moron.

'. You're just naive.

Yeah the required permissions were always in place for other things, but because they've been accepted (and therefore enabled) then they can add the extra functionality without you being presented with the permissions screen again. Let's face it though, how many people pay attention to that screen, or even know enough to bother reading it? Probably a small percentage of the people that use the app.

I don't think it's anything malicious, but I don't like it.
