Jay
Read in the paper today that it'll be hard getting a taxi in town tonight. Apparently someone called the head of the union and asked whether there was industrial action in place tonight. Josh
I'll watch the highlights later. However I heard murmurs about the coin toss not being entirely fair, or at least being somewhat controversial. Would anybody care to shed any light on this matter? Not that it matters anyway because India won. However I heard murmurs about the coin toss not being entirely fair, or at least being somewhat controversial. Would anybody care to shed any light on this matter? Not that it matters anyway because India won. Well, as per ICC rules, the home team captain tosses the coin and the away team captain calls heads or tails. Apparently, Sangakkara didn't call when Dhoni flipped the coin and the toss had to be done all over again. Michael Vaughn says that Sangakkara actually called tails and knew he had lost the toss, so he decided to play ignorant so that the toss could be taken again. However, there's also another story doing the rounds that Sangakkara had called heads and won it the first time too. Not sure what to believe. Jay
SL did have a lot of passengers on their team. That was exposed when they didn't have a 200 run opening partnership. Have you seen Chamara Kapugedara's stats? Outside of Malinga, there's no pace bite. And that was Randiv's first game of the tournament? whaa... Jay
Take away Zak and Malinga and both the attacks look meh... even Bhajji and Murali were underdone this tourney. mystk
Just wanted to say congratulations to all my brothers and sisters from Bharat. I was rooting for Sri Lanka and wanted them to win, but to be honest, we played pretty poorly. The bowling was horrid. But hey, we came to the finals and despite everything, we gave a pretty good fight so it's all good. Girish
More than your bowling, it was your fielding that let you down. Too many unnecessary overthrows and misfields. On the other hand, India were terrific in the field. Yuvraj and Raina together must have saved a good 15-20 runs amongst them. All these things matter at the end, especially since it was a very close contest until the final overs. Still, Lanka played pretty well and gave it everything with what they had. Better luck next time, mate. Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/734925-general-cricket-thread/page/4/#findComment-1060410410 Share on other sites

Girish
Err!! India lifted fake trophy. Real trophy is seized by mumbai customs. Not really. There were two very real trophies. One had arrived days earlier and the one that was caught by the Mumbai customs was supposed to go on display elsewhere. They didn't bother with this trophy because they knew they had another one at the Wankhede already. Also, I believe the real World Cup trophy (the one with all Test playing nations' flags at the bottom) is always with the ICC and is never handed to the winners. Edit: It seems the newspapers are reporting two different stories. I had read the story where they said both the trophies were real and now they're saying only the one with Mumbai customs was real. JoeyLeone25
To be honest I wasn't particularly bothered who would win the World Cup once it got the Semi-Finals (also it helped that England were knocked out...)as it had just been a great tournament with plenty of twists and turns to keep both the avid fan and the casual viewer entertained throughout. Even the final was brilliantly played from start to finish. Once Jayawardene hit his century I told my father that he had "won Sri Lanka the World Cup," before heading off to work. When I returned in the early hours, all my father could muster up through his smug grin was the sentence; "So Sri Lanka didn't count on the Captain coming good, did they." And that's what the 2011 World Cup was always about, the results weren't set in stone till the final ball of the final over was bowled and it certainly made up for the tournament four years ago! Jay
I slept in this morning because I was up till 5am reading this click Basically ESPN sent over one of their American reporters to the World Cup, it's an interesting perspective for an outsider to become immersed in the culture so fast, and be so insightful at the same time. Thanks for that article Jay, it's (as you said) very insightful and incredibly interesting at the same time, it makes you wonder whatt if Sachin was born into the game a few years earlier (or even later) who would have taken his place as the Indian Cricketing King a top the slowly rebuilding Capitalist mountain? It could have been Sehwag, Singh, or even Laxman... Jay
I'll admit, I was simple enough to believe that Sachin was on his mantle on skill alone, but Wright obviously saw something else, and I tend to agree with him that Sachin is more than a player, but also an allegory for the Indian nation as a whole. Such a legend. Link to comment https://gtaforums.com/topic/734925-general-cricket-thread/page/4/#findComment-1060421010 Share on other sites
