161isaiah161
One sad thing about teaching kids how to shoot guns at a young age is that you don't know what they will do later in life (ie rob a bank or join a terror group) and your bascly trained them
GunWrath
@Vlynor, Pretty much what you've said. I don't think all children are capable of learning to shoot firearms.. but it's entirely up to the parent (not saying force them) but it's up to the parent to decide if they're capable enough and what the kid thinks about it. There are some smart kids out there that will be like 'nah, they scare me' and not even worry about it.. but if you're a shooter and a parent, chances are, your kids will want to try it at some point. I wouldn't force my son to come shoot with me or to learn. I'd wait until he asks about it or shows interest in it then I'd bring it up to question. I've had my son with me a few times when I've went shooting at ranges and on properties. He didn't seem to like it that much but at this point in time, he's nearly 4yrs old, so I didn't expect him to. He likes playing guns and things of that nature at home but I think it's just the noise that bothers him the most or the fact that he's just interested in other sh*t and just a toddler. Either way how I feel and view this situation, I still feel bad for the girl man. I can only imagine what it would be like to know that you've ended a life and you're only 9yrs old. Has to be f*cking horrible. I just hope some day she can find peace and I hope this doesn't deter her from guns in whole but if it does, I wouldn't blame her. Shooting is nice, it's relaxing, it's fun and I don't give a f*ck what you think, I've seen a sh*t ton of anti-gun people that shot a gun for the first time and afterwards, they still agreed with their views but they actually enjoyed the shooting. In all walks of life we encounter mistakes but this doesn't mean we should eradicate anything related to those mistakes but instead use them and learn from them. I honestly hope this encourages the state to enforce some more strict range laws and possibly nation wide. Because I've been to the range on a few occasions and seen some careless actions and even had to bring it up to the shooters about it. I don't care if you don't care about your f*cking life but I care for mine.. use your f*cking head, use some sense, and enjoy shooting. @SDNP I agree that the parents are partly to blame but I think if the Uzi had a stock on it and the instructor exercised proper safety rules and sense, it would have been a good day for the girl, the parents and the instructor.. but what could have been a perfect day ended in tragedy. I agree an Uzi starting off, even with a stock or proper instructor would be like 'Yeah, I don't think so just yet' .. I think personally, I would choose an auto-.22 for my son and even then, not a full clip, perhaps a half clip or like an 8 round burster, .. hardly no recoil and they're super fun to shoot. It's just hard for me to see where the parents are being lashed at so aggressively more than the instructor is.. not just on this forum but in a lot of social media outlets and articles. It's plain as day how incorrect, inexperienced and just plain stupid this dude was. Edited August 28, 2014 by GunWrath
Ai®a©ob®a
-snip- Yeah in my family is big on hunting when it comes to guns and bows i can't honestly tell you that if we weren't into hunting if i ever would have picked up a gun at the age i did but i did and i was taught very well on how to use the gun and gun safety. It was drilled into me, My grandpa would be sitting in his chair watching TV and he'd yell for me to come into the living room just to ask me a question about gun safety. I work in Law Enforcement so i carry a side-arm with me 24/7 and i chose to teach my girls gun safety early because they would see me with a gun on my hip and would see me bring in my long-gun case in every night i came home from work and to prevent them from being curious and wondering what it does i sat them down and told them that is' not a toy and i even showed them how dangerous the guns were i took them over to my uncles house and we shot some watermelons to show them what could happen if they played with guns. My oldest is 10 and she understands everything i'm teaching and she knows how to use a gun and has taken gun safety classes while my youngest is only 6 she has a pretty good understanding that my guns were not toys in the slightest and knows never to touch them, I have even tested them i had some old broken BB guns from when i was a kid and i would put it on the kitchen table or out in the yard and i would watch and see what they would do and sure enough as soon as they saw the gun they came and told me and never touched it and it made me proud and i felt like my lessons have sunk in. Even though they know how bad it is i don't keep my guns and ammo in the same place other than my side-arm i wear on my hip from the minute i wake up til i go to bed the guns are in a gun safe and the bullet and magazines are in a separate safe even my sidearm is locked...I have a night stand i equipped with a lock i still have easy access to it in case of an emergency but it's out of their reach. Max
They were giving their daughter an opportunity to do something other than just play with Barbie dolls and hairbrushes. What? Young girls all over the world play with things which aren't barbies and hairbrushes or guns all the time. The rest of the world isn't suffering because our daughters don't have the 'opportunity' to shoot an uzi. Shooting and dolls aren't the only two options. It just blows my mind that you think that a gun is an appropriate toy for a child. Even shooting under supervision, how is that a wholesome activity for a child to do? GunWrath
@trip, I know man.. none of my posts are pointed at yours. @max Guess you don't take sarcasm well either, Max. I never said that a live firearm is a toy. A gun is as appropriate as the owner feels. Could be bad intention, good intention, you, as the owner of a gun decides. Not everyone that owns a gun does it for self-preservation or the means to inflict harm. Others use guns as means of sport/livelihood. Hunting, Competition or just a hobby. Guns aren't always used as tools for the removal of life. You need to factor this in before assuming that all guns on earth are used for such or all guns owned are used as means of hate, prejudice or unlawful actions. Bows are just as dangerous as a firearm, people use them only for sport.. I can say the same for a lot of weapons used in the real world. They saw an opportunity for their daughter to shoot a firearm and unfortunately it was an automatic at the hands of an untrained minor and untrained instructor. Sure, even trained, something bad may have happened but it more than likely would have ended way differently if the instructor had a f*cking clue in what he was doing. Parents across the world opted their kids to ride a rollercoaster, not because they knew they would puke all over the f*cking place but because they wanted their child to have fun. I would think that the same ideal applied here. They just wanted their kid to try something different in life, they didn't intend for them or someone else to be harmed. Does this mean we should limit or remove the ability for a certain age to use a firearm? My opinion.. no.
Payne Killer
@GunWrath You don't need to limit the age to fire guns, just don't let kids use fully automatic weapons with the instructor being behind them holding their hands. GunWrath

darthYENIK
I'm Amercan and was raised anti-gun (and I still am), but even I was tought basic gun safety and how to shoot when I was like 11 or 12. I just want to know when did a day out with the family change from miniture golf and dinner to unloading a few magazines from a sub machine gun? The US government is so concerned about the health and well-being of its people that it puts restrictions on what you can eat and how big your soda can be. Heck, kids can't smoke, drink, they have to wear helmets when riding bicycles, but I guess the government thinks an 8 year old(the youngest age that range will let you be to handle a sub machine gun) is 'cool' for handeling sub machine guns. Welcome to Arizona, man. The same state that wants to kick every unaccompanied child illegal immigrant back over the border into Mexico and doesn't care if they're Mexican or not. The same state where a guy like Joe Arpaio can abuse human rights and not have the public go ape sh*t. And this is coming from someone who is not anti-gun. I like guns. Shooting is fun. But like you, I think is a bit insane that kids can shoot guns at this age. Especially fully automatic weapons. At that age I'm wary of giving a kid a BB gun. K^2
It baffles me that we allow children to mess around with military grade equipment that was designed for war and believe that its OK to use them for recreational purposes.Certainly. We should use guns to kill a bunch of people in 3rd world countries. Using them to shoot at targets? That's obviously criminal. I'm not sure why everyone's blowing this out of proportion. Instructor is the one who f*cked up. He's the one who got shot. If he shot himself while cleaning a gun, we wouldn't be having this conversation. It's unfortunate that a kid got involved, but this shouldn't make it into a gun rights discussion. Should children be shooting guns? Well, there is no good reason for it. But trying to forbid them from doing so is a big part of why gun culture in US is getting screwed up. What are we telling kids? Don't drink alcohol, don't have sex, don't touch guns. What do we end up with? Teenage drinking, teenage pregnancy, and teenage shootings. This isn't an approach that works. Showing children responsible gun use is a great idea. Yeah, you don't want to do it like this idiot did. You don't hand a kid an automatic machine pistol and tell them to go nuts. But there is no reason why kids can't be trained to use .22 pistols and rifles, especially using short .22 rounds. And if a kid demonstrates responsible and proper use, there is no reason not to go up to more serious hardware. So yeah, I think responsible weapons instruction is a much better idea than trying to forbid kids from being anywhere near guns. Just like sex education is a much better option than preaching abstinence. It just needs to be done right, or you'll end up with bigger problems. In both cases. El Dildo
lol My logic is poor? Why? Because I'm pro-gun?.. I'm not expert by any means in all forms of weapons but I can handle just about every reasonable firearm out there, why? Because I know what to expect and I've been trained properly. This girl wasn't trained to shoot automatic handguns or rifles at all, yet the instructor handed her an automatic with a full magazine and a f*cking machine pistol of all choices? That shows the inexperience and stupidity of the instructor, not the parents. The parents are at small blame for trusting an instructor with little to no skills in firearms but aren't at full blame when a properly trained and experience instructor would have known better than to handle that girl that type of weapon. But yes, if my son is trained up until 9yrs of age and has experience with automatics, I'll let him rip as many rounds as I can afford, brother. Because he was properly trained and knows his skill level as well as I would. Parents aren't to blame for mistakes on ranges like this, unless of course her parents were the ones training her, then it would be.. but they weren't. They were merely observing an instructor let a child shoot a weapon, the wrong choice of weapon for her skill set. you still haven't explained how it's NOT the parents fault. my only point is that it's the parents fault. and everything you've said more or less agrees with me, so I don't know why you started arguing the point. krashr
i think maturity is more important than age on it's own. also, factors like quality of involvement and instruction from the supervising adults is big when having any child do anything remotely dangerous (like riding motorbikes, etc) and as usual, there will always be silly people who ruin it for everybody else. i imagine the situation would be even worse if the recoil had ended in her shooting herself

Kampioen
Very tragic. It might sound strange but I feel especially bad for the little girl. The instructor is dead and he doesn't experience grief anymore, but that little girl now has to deal with having killed someone accidentally at 9 years old. But yeah, I think letting a 9 year old child shoot any gun is unnecessary, and letting them shoot a fully automatic one is just incredibly stupid. The counterargument is usually that people will simply use something else to kill someone, which is a dumb argument because other available weapons are less deadly and you will therefore have fewer murders and more attempted murders. Also, if someone threatens you with a gun and you pull one of your own, you've just given them a reason to shoot whereas otherwise his intention was likely only to threaten you.
