Don't you guys think that when you're using the phone in online that it should appear in your hand like in single player? Don't say console limitations because it should honestly not take any power away from other things

 

Inb4 DC_DJ999 or whatever says "console limitations"

The upside of not having it in your hand is that you can still use your gun. Would be great if they held it between their ear and shoulder so they could talk while shooting. If it did show up in your hand it would be a big help for missions when you're calling a helicopter so the other guys would know.

Seriously though, thats what its due to. Just like how the damage physics on vehicles are different from sp to online.

The lack of vehicle damage is honestly ridiculous. I drove into a train the other day so many times the police car I had jacked looked like a C from above. It drove like a dream.

 

On topic: but can it really take so much processing power away from other things that the phone holding animation must be removed for online?

It's not really processing power that's the problem. It's network connections to the online servers that's the issue. You are only partially playing on the local system and largely on the server you are connected to.

Npc characters have animations using phone, answering calls and even drop the phone when startled. Console limitations couldn't be a factor. My guess is laziness.

NPC animations are fixed and not dynamic so don't require the processing power either locally or on the server.

Because in multiplayer, gameplay functionality is more important than little details or features, so sacrificing the ability to run or shoot just so you can see your character holding the phone is pointless. It was like that in GTA IV as well. Red Dead Redemption also has stuff like that. For example, your character won't auto holster their weapon in MP, like in SP.

Rerx is on the ball with this. It's not about limitations it's about game functionality. You really want to not be able to do anything while quickly checking your phone? Try that out a few times in an open lobby with multiple hostiles. Not having the animation is a good thing.
