Should it be the bright, cheesy and casual GTA V style,

the dark, gritty, serious, AWESOME (Sorry!) GTA IV style or even

the dark, but very colorful, pink, Vegas-like GTA VC style?

Everything seems like the next GTA takes place in VC due to its non existant HD version and the GTA VI ce City.

I want it to stay bright a sunny, we get awesome sunsets and the skies are so nice. The darkness of IV was cool to make things tense and to give you the sense that Niko had a difficult life, but it made everything depressing.

Why not something different? If R* explore the 1970s I would love for them to use the damaged film reel, grindhouse look similar to Planet Terror, Machete etc.

Why not everything?

Depending on where you are and what time of day it is.

Daytime, you get the bright GTAV look, nighttime, you get the Vice City look if you're in a well-lit area, or if you're in a dark gritty area, you get the GTA4 look.

Although to be honest, GTA4 didn't look anywhere near as dark and gritty as everyone said it did. For me it was pretty colourful. Adjust your display settings.

Create a world that combines the gritty and the colorful. Two cities with completely different atmospheres separated by miles of geographically varied landscapes. One city is gritty, depressive and cold, and the other is vibrant and colorful. Make a story that exploits this contrast, but keep your focus on organized crime, that's, keep away from V's cheesy style and story.

If it's VC, then I guess something similar to TBoGT.

It's interesting though what kind of graphics can we get. IV had dark, slightly grainy graphics to have a moody atmosphere, TLAD had the grain to make it even grittier, while TBoGT had a whole new style to more fit its neony high life theme. While V had bright, colorful graphics to fit the sunny setting of LS.

So what else could we get... if we say, get a GTA in the 70s, we could get a pale, washed-out graphical style (but not dark) to fit the look of the cinema from the time.

Different area of map could have their own filters or ambience. The rundown areas having a grittier, darker overtone similar to GTA IV, and the richer areas are more colourful and bright, like GTA V. This was applied to RDR; Thieves' Landing was always dark and dingy, regardless of time of day or weather. It was sunny in MacFarlane's Ranch, but as you ride through the marshes into Thieves' territory, the sky grew dark and mist formed. The town's atmosphere was depressing and strong. As you left, the dark clouds lifted and it was bright again. Was really effective and made the whole town seem isolated. Maybe that's more to do with San Diego's superior rural designers, but either way, having dynamic filters would definitely improve whatever map hosts GTA VI.

They tried that with TLaD, and while it was a neat idea, it became an eyesore fast.

I think it needs to look realistic. I would say that GTA V's current look is the most realistic we have gotten in a GTA game. I like it the best. Personally, I think the lighting should appear as it does in that location in the real world, in that time of year that it is set because it makes it feel more real.

I understand the whole "set a mood" thing, but to be realistic, the light penetrating the Earth's Atmosphere doesn't change because the characters are depressed, or what ever. They couldn't necessarily do that in GTA V anyways because the lighting would change when you switch characters and that would be unrealistic.

Edit: North Yankton was kinda dark and gritty because its all snowy there. They just do it by the geological location and time of year. I have a feeling that if we return to LC, during the summer months, it might look much more colorful. Though in GTA V, they did adjust the time of day and weather for the mission, and that sets mood. I liked that better because it still kept realistic lighting.

I agree with this man.

I think the atmosphere should create itself, like have the light bounce off all kinds of surfaces, and reflect on the world itself.

I wouldn't say TLAD was what I described. The "noise" effect used made it feel more like Manhunt than a 1970s grindhouse film.

I'm not sure, but I guess I want some clean but atmospheric graphics.

How?

The game's graphics wouldn't contain some filter effect (color correction) like in GTA IV, TLaD and TBoGT, but, player would kinda feel the weather (see here, weather, not the story's mood). So, world lighting should tend to orange while it's so hot (extra sunny), yellowish orange (less powered than extra sunny's) when it's sunny, blueish when it's cloudy, etc.
