How do you feel about "non-checkpoint" races?

I think it needs to be it's own race type.

e.g.

Standard

GTA Race

Find your Own

As it is I don't think the game is setup very well to make "Find Your Own Way" very fun - but it is something I'd enjoy doing if implemented correctly (not just a race with no checkpoints).

I would want one if only it was in non contact. I would hate to be pit manuevered into the water and have to go back to the starting line.

I would give it a go, but you need to explain in the description so it's clear, BUT I wouldn't if it was:

Class: Super

Custom: On

I'm curious, do you recall the name of the race? I created one called Gumball Grand Prix that goes from Paleto to the lower level of the airport. There's only 2 viable routes really (East or West coast highways) but the problem is that the race length registers as about 5 or 6 miles (straight line - point A to point B) and hence the payouts aren't great : (

Even longer would be a top to bottom checkpoint and back again, if your way down was rubbish then try a different route back.

I made one called Blaine County Gumball Rally. The checkpoints are scattered around sandy shores and then grapeseed. They're far enough apart that racers can choose their own routes and not get totally screwed if thry crash and burn. My friend made one called the robbery tour, one checkpoint in front of every convenience store.

the problem with these races is they're long, most gta players want short jobs just for the cash n rep.

Rallies like this are a lot of fun with friends, especially on Rally or team gta where you can have a navigator to post waypoints.

I made this one...

http://rsg.ms/1opaODf

Console: PS3
Game Mode: Race
Title: Choose Your Own Adventure
Description: Figure out a way to the summit of Mt Chilliad and back down, then to the northern tip of Paleto Bay, and finally south to LS International Airport. Only 3 checkpoints, Cannonball Run style! You're on your own this time, just don't die... it's a long way back to that last checkpoint. Oh yeah, the main highways may have some obstacles. No GPS for this Amazing Race, how well do YOU know Los Santos?

I think that's more of a problem with the lack of attention span and the need to have each checkpoint forcefed to each racer, as if they've never played a racing game before. I prefer my races to last over 4 minutes, every time. I also love the longer races, as if someone wrecks, it's not the end of the world.

I love these on GTAIV. I created a Pilgrim's Progress II. On GTA IV Pilgrim's Progess was a cannonball run race that went from each church on the map. Unfortunately, the GTAO gets obnoxious with going in the wrong direction. I couldn't even get people I know to try it.

The fact that practically no one does impromptu races suggests (which have no checkpoints) that they're not popular. When I've tried making my own custom ones, people have left pretty quickly. I guess that if there aren't checkpoints, some players worry it's a troll job.

No - no one does them because they pay like s*it

Technically Los Santos is just the city. You should put "how well do YOU know San Andreas?".

As for the design it looks interesting but I doubt many people stick around for the whole race.

sounds like burnout.

Then it sounds like greatness.

Probably should be perfered as the checkpoints are busted as hell.

They're kinda fun, only problem I have is that most that I tried are pushing it too far by having you cross the whole state. I wouldn't mind it if it was half that distance at least.

whenever anyone mentions these types of cannonball run jobs i always wonder why more people dont use impromptu races.... We used to do alot fo impromptu racing with crew members and it can be really fun, we always run it so the winner of the last race sets up and picks the destination for the next race... making a job for it seems pointless and it means longer time looking at loading screens or in lobbies, whereas impromptu races, as soon as everyones arrived you set straight off on the next leg

That may be true but, having the bet be $200 per person vs. actual payout AND RP at the end. Why wouldn't you have crew members make up a race and then just make a crew playlist and run that. You would make lots more money and get RP.

we mainly ran impromptu for fun not for mone, as were a racing crew we like to mix it up with different classes and race types, impromptu races were a mainstay as we waited for members to join a session before launching a playlist, rather than spending ages waiting on loading screens

The concept actually originates from the Midnight Club games. If I remember they first appeared in 1 and re-appeared in every game after. Sure they were tough as the AI had a decent route (not the best) but it was a nice change up from the regular checkpoint system.

However that said I'd rather see the return of the unordered races. Basically you'd have a start point and a finish point but a lot of checkpoints within that area. However you can go through a checkpoint in whatever order. But you must go through all of them before you're allowed to finish. While I'd like to see the return of more point to point races in online, unordered races would be just as cool.

Watch from the 3 minute mark to get the understanding of an unordered race.

YES! I loved this in Midnight Club, especially 3 Dub Edition Remix, the only one I had. I've always loved the unordered races as well. Seeing Rockstar also are the creators of Midnight Club, I think they should implement that in a GTA Race.

Not the best one, but you can look at it.

I remember those old days of MC3 when you had to race like this. There was also another gamemode where you had to get the checkpoints in any order and then go to the finish.

Impromptu are pretty fun. People would likely do more of them if everyone didnt have such sn itchy trigger finger in free roam.

Freedom to choose your route to the finish is nice. More open to shortcuts or even longer but faster paths. And the gamble of which is the best option. Plus its harder to know exactly who is winning at any given point. You might be 500m from the finish I might be 800 metres away but taken a route that allows me to floor it while youre weaving corners and traffic at a snails pace.
