How do you feel about "non-checkpoint" races?

I just got invited by a random to do a race, which turned out to be a full house. But, this was a rare style of race. I had to race from Paleto Bay to LS Airport. There were no checkpoints between start and finish, and everyone was forced to find their own route.

Long story short, I got 4th place out of 16, and I liked the job. 5 others did like it too. The rest either disliked or no vote.

In conclusion, how would you feel if you had to race in these "non-checkpoint races"?

The fact that practically no one does impromptu races suggests (which have no checkpoints) that they're not popular. When I've tried making my own custom ones, people have left pretty quickly. I guess that if there aren't checkpoints, some players worry it's a troll job.

More of a rally than a race. I like the sound of the race you played, gives me a few ideas.

whenever anyone mentions these types of cannonball run jobs i always wonder why more people dont use impromptu races.... We used to do alot fo impromptu racing with crew members and it can be really fun, we always run it so the winner of the last race sets up and picks the destination for the next race... making a job for it seems pointless and it means longer time looking at loading screens or in lobbies, whereas impromptu races, as soon as everyones arrived you set straight off on the next leg

I actually like the idea. You would obviously need to have a good bit of distance between the start and end points so that people can be creative in the routes they take. You could have one that starts shortly before you get to Mt. Chiliad with a finish right at the end of the mountain range. People could either drive around or take the more adventurous route over the mountaion.

Could be a lot of fun if done right.

I agree with you; I only tried making custom checkpointless jobs because players didn't seem interested in joining impromptu races.

I made one a while back, probably when the creator was released. GTA IV had Point A to Point B free style races, so I was disappointed when they weren't in GTA V. I was also disappointed that there was no reverse track option. Racing could have been, and still can be a much better feature. Honestly, the whole game still has sky high potential.

I made a race like that

Its called Free Race and based it off of gta ivs free race mode from paleto to airport any way you can. I run it with friends as I have gta on in case your car gets stuck u dont gotta reset to paleto

Arrows to Athens

There was something like this in IV. Everyone started out on foot and had to find a car and took their own route to the finish. It was called Cannonball run or something (Correct me if im wrong).

Checkpoints can be annoying as sometimes you just drive right by them and the game doesn't register it. Instead their should be a waypoint to the finish while all the other roads are blocked off to prevent people from taking other routes. So everyone will be taking the same route. Or they can implement a free race in which you determine whoch rouites you should take. There doesn't have to be checkpoints.

I'd rather be able to place optional checkpoints in order to spice up some races by having small shortcuts and alternative routes.

The concept actually originates from the Midnight Club games. If I remember they first appeared in 1 and re-appeared in every game after. Sure they were tough as the AI had a decent route (not the best) but it was a nice change up from the regular checkpoint system.

However that said I'd rather see the return of the unordered races. Basically you'd have a start point and a finish point but a lot of checkpoints within that area. However you can go through a checkpoint in whatever order. But you must go through all of them before you're allowed to finish. While I'd like to see the return of more point to point races in online, unordered races would be just as cool.

Watch from the 3 minute mark to get the understanding of an unordered race.

They can be fun, I think there is a verified or rockstar created one. Finding someone to do an impromptu race in free roam can be difficult. With the new payout though, you should try doing impromptu races during missions while killing time. I used to do them with friends from the starting point of a mission to the first objective.

I like these races. I know the map so well. Plus it's fun to see what paths people take.

I made a race like this called The 12 O'clock Society. You start off facing the corner of a street and half the grid is facing one way and the other half is facing the other way essentially. The checkpoints are pretty much diagonally across from each other so you can take two main routes and some others in between.

i made a race where you spawn a the bottom of the map and have to get out of the car and run to the street and steel a car the finnish line is at the top of the map by beekers garage bbut you have to drive up to the top of mount chiliad first. How you complete the race is up to you

That may be true but, having the bet be $200 per person vs. actual payout AND RP at the end. Why wouldn't you have crew members make up a race and then just make a crew playlist and run that. You would make lots more money and get RP.

These races in gta iv was so fun.

I remember the one with 4 checkpoints across the map. It was a full session and the race was so close between everyone and we reached and checkpoint right infront of small ramp that goes into the water.

Its hard to tell and people drive full speed and sometimes drive into the water. Basically the first guy went very close to the ramp then every started crashng each other into the water it was hilarious about 12 of us in the water and decided to swin to the next checkpoint

Look up "meals on wheels" on social club if you like this kind of race. Simeon docks to altruist camp 67 checkpoints around the docks(for rp pre 1.16) and one at the camp. On xbox.

I've done a race like this before, going from Elysian Island to Paleto Bay, it's very cool but if you need to respawn your car will be sent back to the starting line which is a serious problem.
Also, I've got some bad ratings for it probably because the other players thought the race was fixed for me to win when in fact it wasn't, and because if you need to reset your car you will have to start from the beggining again, so I deleted it.

I feel that 97% of the people that play this game aren't intelligent enough to understand the beauty of such things. MCLA had something similar. It's a race that really tests your map knowledge, driving ability, and also luck. I enjoy races like this. I haven't played or created any....YET!

A friend of mine made something like this a while ago; basically they were 5 checkpoints hidden around the map. You had to find your own way there, and then find the checkpoint which was sometimes well hidden. Pretty fun.

I made a race like this but ended up deleting it as the payout was very poor.

Two laps of my 'Swamp Thing' race took about the same time and even solo it paid $5k.
