How to not lose chat with friends on missions

My brother and I play online and want to stay in constant contact. Our characters are friends and we have our chat settings both set to Friends Only (we've also tried Crew Only).

However, when we're doing a versus mission against each other, we lose the ability to chat together. Which, I kind of get -- we're opponents in that case.

What makes less sense though, is that we also lose chat if one of us dies on a co-op mission. He'll die and I'll still be alive, and he can still hear me while I can't hear him.

Is there a way to always keep voice chat open between the two of us? We've been FaceTiming as a work-around, but then we can't talk to other players. I've also tried making a direct in-game call to him, but it always drops, and drops by necessity when using the phone for something else or going into another mission.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Xbox master race.

Apologies for not specifying, I didn't think it mattered. We're on PS3.

I don't think there's a workaround, since there's no dedicated chat system for games on PS3 there isn't much you can do. Maybe use Skype instead of FaceTime? It has to be more reliable.

^ it does. Xbox live offers 'party chat', which allows members to talk to other members regardless of what game is or is not being played.

That is the ONE reason why I've been on 360 for a couple of years now....however, PS4 has a system similar to XBLs 'party' system, so I'm getting a PS4

Ah, good to know. I guess we'll keep using FaceTime then until we upgrade to PS4. Thanks!
