The whole culture built prior to 2000's didn't screamed for selling people "swag", they screamed quality, IMO.

People were saying the exact same thing about the eighties during the nineties, the seventies duing the eighties etc. Instead of ''swag'' you had Cross Colors, flannels, and f*cking 'pre-ripped' pants. Plenty of kids in the nineties wasted their time indoors all day as well. I don't know why people act as if the internet or video games didn't exist back then.

If I could pick the decades for me to live in I'd choose different decades for specific parts of my life

 

Childhood - 1990s (the 1990s seems like the perfect time to be a boy with boyish stuff while the 2000s and now tended to appeal more to girls with girlish stuff)

 

High School days - 2000s (don't know why, there's something about the previous decade I just love, maybe its the songs or the mobiles despite what most people say, and the exams weren't too harder than they are now, plus I need the internet to help with revision for exams, I would kill myself without it)

 

University days - now (free university in Scotland, that is all and I like the use of social media right now, but this must be a nightmare for people over a certain age to see this)

 

24-29 - 1950s (getting a job and wasting some time, as well as getting married, I like the 50s but I wouldn't want to go to school during that time)

 

30-39 - 1960s (raising the kids, that seems like the perfect decade I would live in America, somewhere in California, id pick Texas though racism was a problem there)

 

40-49 - 1920/40s (big fan of the Frankie and Benny's type bars there, would be perfect ay to enjoy the years before becoming old as well as some good old cars)

 

the 70s and 80s just don't appeal to me, the 70s are too darkish to me and the 80s I'm not a big fan of the fashion and above all... Margret Thatcher

Back in the 80s (I was 8 when they started and 18 in 1990) we also had video games. We had arcades or single video games machine in the neighbourhood store or coffee shop, we had C64, Intellevision, Spectrum and other "home entertainment" devices. So, in a way, if we wanted we could have spent our childhood and teen years in front of a screen just like some kids do today. Of course games were more basic and not everyone had an Intellevision at home. Sometimes we'd share it in like 8 or 10 during an afternoon. But playing outside was still the most popular thing and video games were for rainy days or for when we wanted to something different other than running, cycling, playing football and generally staying in the sun having fun.

I think this kind of attitude can be taught to kids even today. If parents just buy you a console and tell you have fun by yourself in your room, then they're not helping, aren't they?

For me, I love the late 1960s. The hippie era. People were totally rebelling against the extremely conservative times of before. These times were more about the people than anything else. The people actually had a voice and made themselves heard. It was time to stop putting up with sh*t. It's you're life and you do what you want. That, in my eyes is what this period in time stood for.

 

Freedom, that is one word that sticks out. Everybody was on there own personal journey to find there inner peace and freedom. They did what they could to achieve this with relatively very little hassle compared to today if you were to do the same types of things. Whether that be, drugs, love, music or whatever. There were less rules. You could reasonably do whatever the f*ck you felt like. Reasonably.

 

Music. The music of the late '60s in my opinion is the greatest music era of all time. No question in my mind. From some of the greatest concerts/festivals you could have ever asked for. True rock and roll started and the psychedelic age took off, now it only lasted for a few years. But man, to live in those few years and to experience that first hand, far out!

 

Vehicles. Talk about some of the most iconic vehicles the planet has ever seen, go to the late 1960s. V8 engines and muscle cars were covering the streets. Can you imagine that? Walking down the sidewalk to see a Mustang, Camaro, Chevelle, Charger etc. rumble on by on a regular basis? The oldschool American muscle cars kicked ass. Not to mention you'd see some VW vans pass from time to time, possibly covered in hand painted art and tie dye. Just not a care in the world. Just you and your van, windows down, cruisin'.

 

Now, the fashion style of this time might not be the most appealing, long hair, head bands, ripped jeans, flip flops, who cares. Wear whatever the hell you want, it's all about comfort and how you feel. From what I can tell, that was the mindset back then, your outside appearance was not equal to your inside mindset. Nowadays, it seems that has reversed. Kind of a bummer.

 

Now obviously the biggest downside from that time was the f*ck up known as the Vietnam war. But I really don't feel like going into detail about that. Did a report on this sh*t back in school, I'm sick of it.

 

Also, back then you didn't have all this technology bullsh*t. Now, sure computers and the internet can come in handy hear and there and entertain you for an hour here and an hour there but in general it has a few negatives as well. I go to apply for a job in person, they tell me to check out there website, like f*ck off and just take the damn resume. I'm walking down the street and I want to scratch my balls, I can't there's a camera on the street corner watching me. I take a piss behind some old building, again cameras watching. No privacy. I do strongly believe that this technological age is one of the main causes of the increase in depression and social anxiety these days. I may be talking about myself on this one but I'm sure there are many others in the same boat.

 

Growing up in this day and age you have to adjust your life to the technology. You'd be a fool not to. Growing up in the late '60s or really any time without it and not knowing it even existed wouldn't bother me one bit. In fact, I think I'd be a happier person.

 

Sorry for the somewhat depressing ending to an initially happy post. Just thinking of a time that once was and will never be again, sort of hits me deep. Long live the 60s and 70s! Peace and love.

That was not class, that was just conformity. Yeah people wore suits and hats but not because they had a good sense of style, it's because you would be ridiculed if you didn't. We have a choice now, and it's much better. You want to dye your hair pink and walk around in some sort of vampire outfit? Go ahead. Nobody will bat an eye and you can even still get a job. That is style. It's not a style that I like, but at least it was chosen by an individual rather than by society.

Oh I see. I'm not sure it's true that people generally had more class back then though. Beating your wife was fairly accepted and there must have been drunks, assholes, thieves and liars back then just as there are now. Of course I don't know, I wasn't there, but I suspect the classy image comes mostly from movies.

You know, this is going to seem like a weird stat to throw out in here - but while your odds of being murdered are significantly lower, the odds of you being caught aren't all that hot. I mean, it's not like the wild west, but the latest stats I've read put it around 50/50.

 

Anyhow, Wendy, dear, I used to fetishize that period as well, but then as I've aged I've come to see the ridiculous amount of romance heaped on to every representation we see of that era. It's the fiction you're attracted to. More than likely the first thing that'd hit you is the sexism: I can't even watch stuff from the nineties without significant cringing. Rape was rampant and never spoken of. But hell, if you can look past that, then the medical situation should give you pause... I mean, people regularly died of pneumonia. Smoking was EVERYWHERE. Like, hospital waiting rooms everywhere. So, okay, maybe AIDs wasn't a thing, if you're thinking random sex with strangers is a saving grace - but abortions weren't legal and the pill wasn't a thing until 1960 and it carried a lot of slut shaming with it.

 

And the music, culture, you like? I'm willing to bet you're cherry picking the best of over two decades. It's like someone in the future talking about Nirvana and Whitesnake in the same breath. Or White Stripes and One Republic. Silly.

 

I reccomend hanging out at a goofy 60s diner, staring at sh*tty paintings of Elvis and Marylin hanging out in a corvette or something, until you get it out of your system.

Band of Brothers I couldn't agree with more. We Were Soldiers I think has the same problem as Saving Private Ryan, in that it insists on being an action movie too much. You see very gruesome injures but very little real suffering beyond the immediate physcial pain. They have the delivering of the letters but that's pretty much it I think.

 

Have you seen Der Untergang? I watched it recently and I was very impressed. It shows final days of the war from the perspective of Nazi leaders. It shows the situation in Berlin and in the bunkers underneath the city. Hitler was brilliantly portrayed and the movie was very historically accurate.
