The fact that this epic track released almost 40 years ago (it'll be 40 years old on Oct. 31st) is just so incredible to me.

Here's a short clip of Bohemian Rhapsody straight from the new release.

The quality is astonishing, let alone the great performance. :^:

Because today, Bohemian Rhapsody hits 40 years old! :D

On another side, Bandai will be releasing the S.H.Figuarts Freddie Mercury on next March to celebrate Freddie's 70th birthday. You can pre-order it now at 6000 Yen (plus tax).

http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2015/10/21/bandai-previews-freddie-mercury-shfiguarts

Until Hot Toys released their version of Freddie (which we don't know when :p ), this is a good non-album collection of Queen (or Freddie) at reasonably price. :D

Happy 40th Birthday, Bo Rhap!

original_resize_720_360.jpg

It's amazing to think we almost never had this instant classic. Queen's record company did NOT want it as a single because it was too long. They demanded that the song be cut down to three minutes, but Freddie refused. He took his masterpiece to Kenny Everett, a famous 1970s radio DJ, and told him not to play it on the air (with a wink and a nudge, I'm sure). That weekend, Kenny played the song 14 times! And it quickly rose to #1 in the charts, where it stayed for 9 weeks.

Here's a recording of Kenny playing Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time. This new audio was literally released today.

And here's an awesome documentary all about the song.

Here's some random bits of trivia I pulled from the official Queen website. :)

The song is nearly 6 minutes long, 5:55 to be exact.
• Label EMI and manager John Reid deemed the song too long and advised an edit. Kenny Everett aired the song on London’s Capital Radio in its entirety, 14 times over the last week-end in October 1975 and by the Monday Morning, record stores were inundated with requests.
• BR was the only song to win Queen an MTV Music Video Award.
• BR is the most popular Muppets cover with just over 47 million views on YouTube.
• In November 1991, Bohemian Rhapsody became No.1 for a second time, when it was re-released by Queen immediately after Freddie Mercury's passing to raise money in the fight against AIDS. 16 years after its original release. This was the first time a song had topped the charts twice. In 1992 the song had yet another revival from the popularity of “Wayne’s World” with that famous clip.
• It is generally recognised as the first promotional music video ever and it was based on the band's Queen II album cover. Directed by Bruce Gowers, it was shot in 3 hours for £3,500 at the band's rehearsal space.
• This was Queen's first Top 10 hit in the US. In the UK, where Queen was already established, it was #1 for 9 consecutive weeks, a record at the time.
• A Night At The Opera was the most expensive album ever made at the time. Queen used 6 different studios to record it.
• Ironically, the song that knocked this off the #1 chart position in the UK was "Mamma Mia" by Abba. The words "Mamma mia" are repeated in this in the line "Oh mamma mia, mamma mia, mamma mia let me go."
• Mercury may have written "Galileo" into the lyrics for the benefit of Brian May, who now has a PHD in astrophysics . Galileo is a famous astronomer known for being the first to use a re-fracting telescope.
• Scaramouche is a stock character from commedia dell’arte (improvised Drama from the Italian 16th century), a buffoon who always manages to wriggle out of the sticky situations he in-variably finds himself in, usually at the expense of someone else. Original name ‘Scaramuccia’ means ‘skirmish’. “Scaramouch” means a boastful, yet cowardly person.
• Bohemian Rhapsody was one of five songs Freddie wrote for A Night at the Opera.
• Bohemian Rhapsody has been covered by many artists over the years, including some rather unlikely ones, such as Pink, Kanye West, Robbie Williams, Elaine Page, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Montserrat Caballe, The Muppets, and Elton John & Axl Rose (at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert in April 1992).
• Bohemian Rhapsody was voted The Song of the Millennium in 2000, and the Guinness Book of Records' No 1 song of all time.
• Bohemian Rhapsody was pressed on blue vinyl in 1978. Only 200 were pressed, and thus it is one of the most collectable records of all time.
• Bohemian Rhapsody first featured in Queen's live show in the 1975 UK tour, which commenced in Liverpool on November 14th. It would feature in every concert thereafter, including Live Aid in 1985 and Queen's final show with Freddie, on August 9th 1986.
• Bohemian Rhapsody was Queen's first UK single to feature a picture sleeve.
• Like all tracks from the ANATO album, Bohemian Rhapsody was produced by Roy Thomas Baker and Queen, with Mike Stone engineering.

I love Bohemian Rhapsody. Not only is it a musical masterpiece, but it's insanely popular even today(at least among my peers). Cool facts.

I didn't know a good bunch of the facts you've listed, but this one just stands out to me for some reason. I would be so proud to own a copy, and I hope the collectors that do own a copy feel the very same way.

Freddie certainly was very talented, in the studio and in live performances. That's what I love so much about him. I wish he was still around so newer generations could experience Queen in a new form, together and united with Brian, Roger, and John.

Thanks for those awesome signatures. If you don't mind, I'm gonna add them to the main post of the topic :^:

What a sad week it must have been 24 years ago.

I was still in my moms tummy.

Keep rocking in Heaven Freddie.

I'm always at a loss for words on November 24th. So here's to my favorite musician. The legendary Freddie Mercury.

I don't know if it's just because I'm super tired, but I'm very fascinated by 8-bit music, so I kinda listened to the whole album :D I would love to make ringtones out of Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy and Killer Queen! What's a good program to do so? Audacity?

I keep meaning to start an "official m-pop thread" because if we get one about Koreans, why not Mongols?

If I did, this would be in it.

That was pretty cool, gfen.

Queen actually recorded two different versions of We Will Rock You. There's the one we all know from the radio, but there's also this one, which is so much better. It's got a kick ass bass solo at 1:14.

I purposely took the high road and didn't make a gay joke at Freddie's expense, sir, I expect you to stop trying to force it out of me.
