I miss seeing all these videos on Queen-Weekend(s) they used to have on MTV... yes.. before it turned to sh*t.

Queen Weekends on MTV? Never heard of it. Was it only once in a while? I mean, I'm sure other bands had weekends too, right?

Yeah, they used to happen once or twice a year. That's how we had all the Queen videos recorded on VHS.

I also remember Beastie Boys weekends on MTV. Was so cool!

Same here :(

A few months ago I found this in my dad's CD case (yeah, that sounds old, hahah):

Madeinheaven.jpg

Lots of things got in my mind, reminded me when we used to listen to that CD (along with Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, Modern Talking...) during sundays, 10 or 15 years ago in his Ford F-250... lots of good memories!

I cleaned the disk a bit, put it in my notebook and listened to it. That felt good... I miss those days. Then I decided to research all about Queen, I'm a big GNR fan and the brotherhood in Queen is amazing, I see how they still honour Freddie these days and when I think about GNR, I realize how Axl is a dick for all he did to the old band.

Yeah, Axl Rose is a bit of dick. But despite all of his flaws, he's both a brilliant musician and a huge Queen fan. Check out this excerpt from a Queen documentary narrated by Axl Rose...

And of course, he performed with Queen and Elton John (yep, Elton John!) at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert (he comes in at 3:17)...

I got that video here, crowd reaction is amazing :O

and yeah, Axl is great, but it feels so wrong not to have the old band back, I'd travel the world to watch them perform live again (Axl, Slash, Izzy, Duff and Matt...or Steven).

Too bad we don't have Freddie with us.. :( I'm sure they'd still be kicking ass around the world.

It's so easy....

I've been listening to Barcelona recently. I really believe that it's Freddie Mercury's proudest moment. I wish he'd lived long enough to record more songs in this style, because it's truly unique. It's a blend of pop, opera, and gospel. Has anyone else listened to the album?

Barcelona_Album_Cover.jpg

In this recording, which is my personal favorite from the album, he sings with his natural voice...no straining of the voice, or use of falsetto, just him singing baritone.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrqsjEUrvKM&list=RDvrqsjEUrvKM#t=25

This recording, which is very operatic, tells a pretty compelling story written by Tim Rice (lyricist for Elton John).

Love hearing demos.. It's great to see how tracks evolve and how they sound before they are mastered etc..

You call that a serenade? Ha! ;)

This, my friend, is a real serenade...

By the way, that's a great demo Mister Pink. Here's one with Brian May on lead vocals...

I still prefer Freddie on lead vocals though. :D

Haven't been in this topic for a very long time. Very pleasing to see its not just me and Queen talking back and forth anymore :p

I always find the demos to be really interesting to listen to, since they're so different from the finished product. I just listened to the Headlong demo posted by Mister Pink and then went to have a listen at the version on the Innuendo album. Awesome progress.

Haha, yeah, it's good to know we're not alone. Speaking of demos, I was browsing and came across this little gem. Ever wonder what Under Pressure would sound like without David Bowie? Well here it is...the early skeleton of what would later become a classic.

Hate to say it, but I think David saved it. lol

Love the story behind the creation of Under Pressure too. John Deacon came up with the familiar rhythm, went for pizza, came back to the studio, and realized he forgot it. Luckily, Roger Taylor remembered it. haha

Holy sh*t...this just in.

John Deacon signed a copy of Live at the Rainbow alongside Brian May and Roger Taylor. This is a big deal because John Deacon has been hiding from the public eye since the late nineties. I'm geeking out right now.

Nice to see he's still around. It's a shame he isn't touring with the other fellas.

Also, today (September 5th) would be Freddie's 69th birthday. Happy Birthday, Freddie!

There's a limited edition set of official Freddie Mercury apparel on sale until tomorrow. All proceeds go to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, which fights AIDS worldwide. I bought myself the t-shirt and hoodie. It felt good knowing that my donation will help someone. If you're interested, follow this link, but hurry as time is running out.

So, when I heard Radio Ga Ga for the first time, my reaction was "wow, it's quite Daft Punk-y for a Queen song, but it needs more Daft Punk-y". Several times later, I found the extended version.

Darn, I missed out :( Looks like a great design, honestly.

I have to admit that I haven't been listening to Queen as much lately, but I plan to change that soon :p It's kinda hard listening to the same songs.. the same hits.. over and over. I wish they were able to create new music and material.

If you're interested, I've started listening to The Weeknd, Big Data, and Aero Chord

I've been listening to Queen on an almost daily basis since July 2003. On the days I don't listen to them, I'm still thinking about them. Even I can admit that's crazy.

But here's the thing. Have you listened to the band's demos? And especially their solo careers? For example, Roger Taylor's solo career is very deep and eclectic. Check these out.

I did something similar to do that, but in a jazz combo group. I took the original and made it...swing more. It was pretty fun.

I disagree, it's the perfect example of the power of music and context to define a vision (no pun intended on the title).

It is nearly note for note, it is absolutely word for word, version of One Vision. I doubt that Freddie realized how absolutely dreadful the words when reframed could be, because they are absolutely the same:

One flesh, one bone

One true religion

One race, one hope

One real decision

Out of context, it goes from an uplifting vision of world unity to a facist military dirge. I always loved Laibach for presenting the dichotomy of it, and the lack of differences in political extremism of both ends.

With that, Laibach was (and still is) primarily an artist's movement, the music was secondary to add to their goal They've also so perfectly crystalized their manifesto in this over any other cover they've done (including the Beatles, the Stones, Prince, Andrew Lloyd Webber and more).

I look forward to finding more Queen covers for this thread; although, fwiw, I do celebrate Laibach's full catalogue, and have for decades. Imagine my surprise when, after listening to that for some time, to hear Queen's "One Vision" for the first time.

Still don't like it. The vocals are dreadful. But I did enjoy the brass.

But keep em' coming, gfen. You're bound to find a cover that I will approve of. :p
