Doubt they will ever get in the past, specially if the next GTA comes with Online, because they can't sell hypercars and militarized vehicles in these eras. GTA's set in past were replaced by RDR now.

Twice in a row now? I'm nothing feeling it

Why not? They're kind of doing it in RDR2 and with previous GTA games.

It's a good way for them to make the map look bigger, compared to the last game, and reduce effort. They would only have to update somethings in the map (maybe keep some buildings from Online) to make it more actual and make the new cities.

Honestly, I think this will be a trend for R*. This way, they can expand the map more and more, every game, reaching the whole USA map (speculated in the past for the future GTA game). I don't know, just thinking

Here's a list of potential locations based on a few leaks:

Miami + South America
Boston
Las Vegas (1970s)
Chicago
Detroit
A small town with ridiculous levels of detail
Mexico City

The Miami one comes from The Know (Project Americas), Boston comes from a tweet by a Boston police officer (he said they were meeting with Rockstar Games and later deleted the tweet).

The rest come from a supposed GTA VI brainstorm that Ash leaked.

Of these locations, which would you most prefer for GTA VI?

I'm hoping for an extended San Andreas with San Fierro and Las Venturas.  Theres a possible precedent for a Los Santos return with New Austin more than likely returning in Rdr2, and I always felt Vice City was just a set piece to do a game about the 80's.  I'm sure they'd do Vice City great, but I just think SF and LV would be a much more entertaining playground.  I do think they will bring back LC and LS for VI, if anything for online.  I did hear rumblings about them wanting to do all of SA for V, so that may be somewhat of a clue.

70's New York City would be amazing! I think GTA set in New York City is the franchise at its very best anyways, so I'd welcome going back to Liberty City again ... but in a different time zone!

At first I liked the idea of a new Vice City. But thinking more about it, made me change my mind to Liberty City. I think Liberty City is the best option and then Vice City

Lc used in most gta games and I don't think they return it soon.

I finished Max Payne last week and have a thought... Liberty City _could_ be cool once again... if the game will be set in winter!

Las Vegas (1970s)

I could get into this.  Las Venturas at some point in the past when the Mafia had a huge presence there.  Could be a cool tie-in if they release a casino heist DLC!

I still think it's going to be Vice City though.

Why do people want to go back in time? It will restrict everything, cars, clothes, technology to that time period and earlier (generally)

A contemporary GTA allows for those items to appear as retro content, but a period GTA will be restricted by that time frame for all the stuff that came after it.

The atmosphere changes drastically depending on the era. A contemporary setting is the one we've been seeing for last two games (plus episodes) AND in RL, sounds like time to mix things up a little.

Go forward then. Let’s see what Rockstar would do with a city like Mega City One from Judge Dredd. That would be a radical change.

Because modern time is fake. I don't care if it restrict anything.

Simply because it makes for a much more interesting story, SP wise. I'd much rather play in 70's Las Vegas than 2018's LC/VC/SA.

It helps that I also prefer retro clothes, and especially retro cars to the disgusting sh*t GTAO releases with it's updates. I could live without my character having a phone and cars that shoot missiles. I certainly don't miss any of that in RDR2, which is miles ahead of the latest GTA in terms of quality.

As for going forward. I'd love for them to do that but can't imagine they would, at least not as far forward as Cyberpunk will be. I'd expect them to stay in a relatively safe zone of 5-10 years if they went forward.

GTA's next setting is narrowed down to being a US location. Much as I'd love to personally see a similar kind of game set in London it just wouldn't work. GTA's world is American satire from people based in the UK, so setting in London makes no sense. For one thing, you can't go into a shop in the UK and buy a semi-automatic rifle like it's some kind of toy shop. It's not the case everywhere in reality, but it's a satirical-based world. As for inside the US, well I don't think Vice City is really on the table unless Rockstar go back in time again to the 1980s. Vice City is as much about the time setting as it is the city setting.

It's too soon to return to Liberty City, so that leaves us with San Fierro or Las Ventures. Ideally for me you would have both together, but I'd bet more on San Fierro. Venturas could work in an era where the mob rules the casinos (even though the only difference with corporations is that they pay tax 😋), but Fierro could work in the modern day. Then again, I fear it may be too similar in tone to GTA V with some kind of Silicon Valley California setting, but who knows. I can't make a bet as to where would be next, but I know for sure it's going to be an American city. I can't see Rockstar going away from the big three yet without giving them all a HD re-imagination, but who knows.

I agree with pretty much the rest of your post. I think you make sense. I just wonder why you think only the US can be satirised?  Why does London make no sense? There's people, cars, crime buildings.  It's another immigrant, melting pot city with gangs from all over the globe represented. That's really all you need for a GTA. And the level of good satire that game from England like shows like The Office which is globally renowned shows that satire of the human condition and how we are with each other is universal, especially in the western world. There are more similarities with the UK and the US than there are dissimilarities.

As for the walking into Ammu-nation - that's a bit unrealistic as it is. Most people don't really do that in the U.S. so easily. Gun control is highly regulated and it's almost impossible for the average citizen to carry a gun in NYC. So did Rockstar do? Black market guns. How else? In fact, I enjoy buying black market weapons from dealers than Ammu-Nation. It's seedier, it's more underground. It's more a crime game to me. In fact, it's quite ridiculous going into a store and buying RPGs in GTA.  I would find buying a RPG out of a van in some back alley more plausible.

Where do I see the next GTA?

Boston - It's not been done yet. Why redo cities that not only Rockstar have done but other developers too - and in the same style! Why revisit old cities over and over again? I keep making this point but I'll make it again. Los Santos (LA) and Vice City (Miami) were once original cities covered by GTA. What do I mean original? I mean open-world GTA-style games never before experienced as an open-world game like GTA. Rockstar had a relatively new format and they had dibs on those cities first.  Since Vice we had Vice City Stories and Scarface: The Word Is Yours.  We also had LA in San Andreas, GTA V, True Crime: Streets of L.A., L.A. Noire, Need For Speed Underground 2, Midnight Club: LA. L.A. has been done to death.

We haven't had an original GTA city since 2004!!

Boston offers not only a new, original GTA experience but a new city of open-world GTA-style gaming! Rockstar have the chance to bagsie it as the first devs to do it. It's creates a more original experience for the gamer. Nobody can compare it to anybody elses version. That makes it unique. Unique experiences are so valuable to me  Rockstar.  I love Vice City and love Liberty City but I don't want to play all my games in the same cities. Where's the originality?

Boston offers so much.. think of all the good movies based there..

The Departed

Black Mass

The Town

Mystic River

The Fighter

Gone Baby Gone

Not to mention the gangs there like Whitey Bulgers "Irish" Winterhill Gang from Southie and the Patriarca Itlalian mafia family.

It's also got that perfect mix of water and land in a city...

Maybe we can get Bill Burr in a comedy club too! 😛

America only being able to be satirised is more Dan Houser’s words than mine. He himself believes that GTA is American (in the case of its setting) and that’s why it wouldn’t make much sense. If the Creative Director of Rockstar doesn’t think London is suitable for the concept of GTA then I’d take his word. I would hope that one day he changes his mind, since very few games of the genre actually take place outside the US. Getaway Black Monday is the only one I can think of in London, and that world is less open and about as in-GTA you can get.

I understand that London is very similar to New York, arguably equivalents (in fact my martial arts teacher says every big major city is mostly the same but as different versions) but it’s got a very different feel to it, and in the case of a parody it is even more so. Smoking cigars and drinking tea is a very British stereotype for example. If Houser doesn’t feel stuff like that fits into GTA then it’s his word really. As I said though I would hope he changes his mind. I’d love to play a GTA game and aim a gun at a Londoner for them to say in shock “wow, easy now geezer”.

I would certainly be satisfied with a remastered Los Santos and Blaine County, with the extension to San Fierro and Las Venturas as per the ubiquitous fan map that does the rounds. Perfect as far as I'm concerned. They could build on what is there and develop it so it is far more detailed, more heavily populated with flora and fauna, more interiors, half finished construction buildings finished, new developments etc, and then expand the map with the same detail to take in the other cities. That would keep a lot of people happy for some time I would suggest.

All interiors being accessible doesn't really seem realistic. Well, they could be all cut-and-paste, but where's the fun in that?

That's what I said in this post some time ago...   they already have Los Santos done, expand it and we'll have "two" cities (it could be more) for the price - and time - of one.

The best thing is to have all "public" interiors like hospitals, airports, motels,banks... Accessible and interactive(all unique and without copy/paste) with purpose and ALSO have like maybe some(like 20-30) interiors accessible at night for burglaries with a copy/paste mechanic that's my dream.

I want Vice City and Las Venturas in one map with a countryside and small towns with all Public interiors and many different safehouses to buy and many houses to rob. They should also leave the mission related interiors open after missions.
