I don't think they will go back in time. Los Santos in GTA V was completely different from GTA: San Andreas, just like Liberty City in GTA IV was completely different from GTA III, both in map location and in storyline and also in time. They won't do the same thing twice. Vice City will most likely be modern Vice City.

It won't be the 80s, it will be 2017-present.

tbh, if the "Project Americas" rumor is legitimate, I'd be surprised if it wasn't set in the 80s. Why do Miami and Colombia/South America if you aren't gonna go with a 1980s setting?

I'm hoping for Vice City right now. Seeing how they did Liberty City and Los Santos I have high hopes for it. Especially as they are likely to add more areas such as the keys and swampy areas which would be a much welcome addition.

I wouldn't mind seeing London but personally I'm not fond of the capital which is already in alot of media as is. Somewhere like Liverpool would be interesting though. It could also send us to parts of northern Wales aswell as the surrounding English towns and countryside.

Why not? Obviously large cities seem to appeal to the masses the most, LA, New York and Miami people all over the world know, be it from TV (I would add Las Vegas to the list). So Miami is the logical choice (though not my personal favorite), I don't think that the youngsters would appreciate an 80ies setting and they are the key target group. Personally I'd like to see a GTA at the end of 90ies, maybe in Las Vegas and San Fransisco - would time and location fit well?

It won't be in Vice City and I will tell you why. R* have said themselves that VC had that 80's feel to it and revisiting it would not be the best idea. They said that they do not plan to visit vice city also because the atmosphere would be different. They answered this in a Q&A. You should be able to find it.

Nope, it will be in Vice City, though. They may plan to visit Vice City. It would be the best idea.

Probably, we could see the concept being added in RDR2 (by adding cities from previous GTAs (LC or LS) to the GTA6.)

Also, some of you may remember an old interview with R* where they said they their GTAV was build so that they can expand their world as they wish...

First time posting about anything other than RDR2. Rockstar's info dump over the past week has been great but having so many details filled in inevitably leads to your mind wandering over to that which is still shrouded in complete mystery!

So anyway, this is just some half-hearted, wishful-thinking speculation on my part that I thought I'd share. For a while now my hoped-for setting for the next GTA has been Las Venturas, either in the modern day but ideally in the 70s. LV just stands out to me as the most major city-style American setting outside of NY and LS that of course hasn't been committed to "HD" by Rockstar, and would provide so much satirical material in terms of the angle R* seem to want to push with GTA games going off of V. Meanwhile the period setting would really help GTA VI stand out and feel different compared to their recent (GTA) efforts.

Of course, that's just one man's hopes. But something caught my eye in an article I read about Hangar 13, the developers of Mafia III. I'll link to the article (https://kotaku.com/how-the-makers-of-mafia-iii-lost-their-way-1825242177) but I've quoted the part that caught my eye:

"As they entered 2017, the people behind Mafia III split into two main groups. Some people moved on to the game’s downloadable content, while others started conceiving ideas for what their next project might look like. At first, the plan was to make Mafia IV, set in Vegas during the 1970s. It was an enthralling vision—a video game take on Martin Scorsese’s Casino, set in the glitz and glamor of mob-controlled Sin City. It’s easy to imagine what that might have looked like: fighting enemies on the strip, managing your own casino, putting your character’s name in lights. Plans for a fourth Mafia didn’t last long. At one point, as two sources recalled, Blackman flew to New York City to meet with Take-Two and 2K higher-ups. He then told the staff of Hangar 13 that he’d been given a choice: They could either develop Mafia IV or start something completely unique, a new intellectual property. He said he’d picked the latter. “The way it was pitched in the big all-hands meeting was: Mafia IV was a great thing, it’s exciting,” said one person who was there. “But we’ve always wanted to do our own IP.”"

At first I was just intrigued because of how much this potential Mafia game lined up with my own wished-for video game setting. And then I felt disappointment for this game that would not be. But then I started to think:

This game got cancelled after H13 met with Take Two. The article indicates that this was out of choice by the studio lead - they took up the offer to do something differently. But this is second-hand information - what the studio lead recounted to the source/employee about the meeting he had. This just makes me wonder - why would Take Two offer and then allow the studio to do something other than a successor to their recent game that T2 actually boasted about being a success what with 2-4 million sales in its first month. Especially in favour of a brand new - and thus risky - IP. It makes me think there's something off/missing about the report of the meeting.

And then I really go into far-fetched and wishful territory - what if T2 "offered" them the opportunity to do something different because their current concept was all too similar to a project one of their other, immensely more successful and prestigious studios was currently developing!?! What if their offer wasn't an offer - rather an intervention from above whereby the top dogs had waded in on their territory and they now had to find a new area to call their own!?!

Of course, I have absolutely no evidence for this other than reading into and speculating on the info in that article. And it doesn't line up with any of the recent "Project Americas" rumours/leaks. And I don't necessarily believe it to any proper degree myself - as I said before it's more just some fun, wishful speculation that I thought I'd share!

Look at it like this. What Rockstar has been doing with their GTA games is reimagining locations from GTA 1. Vice City. Liberty City. San Andreas. Thats what GTA III, VC, SA, IV, and V were. So the most logical choice for the next game would have to be either San Fierro, Las Venturas, or Vice City. If Rockstar set their game in San Andreas again, as a new title, thatd be weird, because each GTA game gets set in locations far from eachother. And youd expect a GTA game set in SA to stand on its own with no need of another game only set in SA. So, I think Vice City is a logical choice for GTA VI to be set. Its the only actual city thats really waiting. And really, the game GTA VI(ice) makes it really obvious. How could they actually pass up on that?

With that being said, I dont want GTA 6 in the 80s. I think they have a nice thing set up where the setting of the games correspond with the year they release. Modern. I wouldnt like if they just went back, just because they werent confident that Miami is only iconic when its retro. Miami is an iconic city, period, regardless of the time period.

But a fix to not doing Vice City in the 80s would be if Vice City isnt the only city in the game. Therefor, not the only focus. This can be where the idea of past cities in one GTA game can come into place; a United States map. Vice City, included, plus others. SA, VC, and LC (North Yankton?) are all situated in a way that they can outline the US for the most part. With the only exceptions being Texas, and Washington State.

Rockstar likes to reinvent GTA with each game. III turned it 3D. VC turned it retro. SA turned it into multiple cities, and added many features that werent in the other two games. IV changed the pace by changing the universe, and making GTA more grounded. And V reinvented GTA as a whole with a bunch of new additions. Rockstar would have to do more than set VC in the 80s, again, if they want to surprise a lot of people (especially since a lot of people are expecting it, not just wanting it). Of course they coulddo that, if the US map were to be retro, but visiting the past GTA cities wouldnt ring the same bell if all of them went back in time, just because of VC. Definitely not since the idea was to revisit our favorite places weve been to in the past games.

This idea was said all the way back in 2012. Before V even came out. Hopefully, a big part of why GTA 6 is taking so long is because its a very big game.

My preferred location for gta6 would be Florida/Vice City, i'd really like to see Miami and Florida redeveloped.

But 2 options I could see Rockstar considering...

i) the redevelopment of vice city, expanding the map to be bigger than gta5, including the whole Florida state, adding Tampa Bay as a secondary town, maybe Orlando and somehow incorporating a theme park to represent what's there, also adding the top secret space centre (as they already added a military base in gta5) and adding Daytona Raceway (as they already added a horse racing track in gta5) also adding areas such as the Keyes and a couple of international airports (instead of just 1 like gta5)

ii) the redevelopment of San Fierro, Las Venturas and Carcer City into one expansion map, with the closer of gta online and online 2 opening with the aforementioned attached to the currently online map of San Andreas, being added to the north and east of the current map

although I'm by no means clued up on the tech side of things, I can only assume that the servers may not be able to handle option 2?

Nice options, that's true.

GTA VI will have the South Florida map, just include Miami, Miami Beach, Florida Keys and Everglades. Although it is the southern island of Florida.

With Florida, I've heard it was expanding the entire map from GTA VI that would be the whole state of Florida to add cities in Florida, just the northern and southern part of Florida.

Florida could become Panama, most likely GTA VI. Might even be set in Vice City.

As for San Fierro, Las Venturas and Carcer City, it would be a map expansion for GTAO2. R* may redesign San Fierro and Las Venturas to be more like the real-life San Francisco and Las Vegas, and redesign Carcer City to be more like the real-life Camden. I think Carcer City is based on Camden.

On topic now, I choose Vice City. Used to love Vice City, but I think GTA VI will be set in Vice City unless R* does something amazing with it.

I really want to see Vice City in present day, if only to complete the HD universe by having had all three main settings recreated into realistic worlds. I hope it has a dark tone though. I also want to see Liberty City again at some point. I wouldn’t mind them enlarging it either provided everything memorable from IV remained.

It would be restrictive to take the next iteration of GTA “back in time” for the setting, especially if there is a new version of Onlne to go with it. Much of Online’s appeal is the ability to release new and modern clothing, weapons and vehicles based on their real-life counterparts, as well as retro classics.

You would be stuck with mainly only being able to release content from the era, with possibly a few exceptions.

i think that this is going to be a challenge for Rockstar with RDR2. There is only so much content from the time period that can be created.

The next GTA will be contemporary.

Probably back to the city, New York (Liberty city)  obviously far more advanced & detailed.... making it double the size of GTA4 map.

I think R* knows ppl want VC but at the same time modern miami crime rate doesn't fit the game so I think they could take a Good route here:

An enormous map consisting LV+SF+VC with the desert. Also VC should have more surroundings. They could connect Northern SA and VC by planes or they could create the entire south USA which would be mindblowing.

And after that when the time comes and the technology fits they finally do what we all dream of. Fully remodeled LC/SA/VC  in one map for GTA VII(possibly the last GTA).

I hope not. At least with V’s map you can get out of the city and get some diversity in the desert, forests and mountains. I would hope that whichever city the map is modelled on, there is some open countryside to explore. The city parts of the map are too oppressive and claustrophobic for me, that’s why I gave up with IV ultimately.

Can you just imagine how long is it now since GTA V?! Think everybody! THINK! Maybe the whole San Andreas, Las Venturas, San Fierro, Liberty State, Alderney State, North Yankton, Vice City, Anywhere City, London and Manchester is in the next GTA! Right? I know! It will be like, 100GB! But, it's worth it! It will not kill your PC! But, it will waste your PC! IT WILL BE FINISHED AT YEAR 2222! Who knows if you're still alive at that year?

No, no, no, no, just joking! Ok, Yeah! Most games are like 50gb today! They punish your PC! But, it will the best game! Right? It will be astonishing! I really wish for that..

Disagree. Online already is pretty unrealistic there are already a lot of things in the game that don't exist. Also if they go back in time only the single player story would be restricted to the era it's set in but GTA online could ignore it since its never taken itself seriously.

They also screwed up the timeline already. Online was supposed to take place in 2013 before the V story but the doomsday update moved time ahead and it's 2017 in Online now.

There would be even more things that wouldn’t exist in a historic GTAO, including all the contemporary vehicles, mobile phones, clothing, equipment, weaponry, even culture. It would be really jarring to have an 80’s story for example, but then ignore that for online. I don’t think it would work.

As said, I can’t see how there will be the same longevity with RDR2 online, because of the limitations of the era the game is set in. That is unless they start releasing Wild Wild West type steampunk content, which would be pretty awful in my opinion.

Confession: I never played GTA Vice City(The only GTA I haven't played). So, this would be a great way to get introduced to the city.

Its only right for Vice City to come back, Liberty city & San Andreas got its HD version.

Setting: Yes, the 80's would be obviously awesome, but modern day Vice City wouldn't be all that bad too. GTA V had the concept of money, the next one can take the route of drugs, methamphetamine ...all that sh*t.

NO Multiple Cities: This may not be a popular opinion, but I actually don't want multiple cities. I want one city with insane amount of detail and activities. The idea of multiple cities may sound appealing, but there are always repercussions. I don't want them sacrificing stuff just so we can visit other cities. In short, the old cliché, quality > quantity.
