Seems like we've been over this and over this, but the thing about Vice City/Miami is this: it was the PERFECT setting for a game world whose story is set in the 80's.

PERFECT!

Know what else Miami is perfect for (story-wise)?

Nothing. It's no different than Virginia Beach or San Diego or Tampa Bay or Portland (Maine OR Oregon).

No offense to anyone who lives in Miami. It's just not even REMOTELY as iconic as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas or NYC.

If they go back to Miami/Vice City...it HAS to be set in the 1980s. Otherwise...there's just no reason to go back there.

Personally, I'm not ready for another 80s GTA story. I'll take one if they give me one, but I'd rather something else. Which means: no Vice City. IMO.

GTA VI will take place in Liberty City.

Guarantee it. No doubt about it. Why do I say this... Well it's a pattern and before you guys even say "BUT BUT GTA IV took place in Liberty City so it'll be somewhere else" think about this. GTA 3 took place in Liberty City, the game came out in 2001 on the ps2/xbox. 7 years later, GTA IV took place in Liberty City on PS3/xbox360,

It's been 8 years since GTA IV. Now why in the world would you think it wouldnt take place in there if it was done 7 years in between? Its a pattern. GTA VI will take place in Liberty City

Liberty City Stories is the same city as GTA 3 so it doesnt need to be included. Rockstar is not going to use any more cities that arent Liberty City Vice City or San Andreas.

The thing to remember about Rockstar is that patterns mean nothing. They don't do things because location x is next or because it's been n years since location y. The driving force is creativity. One of the prime reasons they chose Liberty City for GTA:IV was because they could completely reimagine it in HD as a parody of New York. They could bring their new RAGE enabled graphics to LC and create something special.

Their choice of Los Santos for GTA:V was because they wanted to do the same thing for America's second most iconic city. And because they wanted to something lighter and brighter in tone to IV. Not because it was 'next' or because it had been n years since they last did it.

The location for GTA:VI (or whatever they choose to call it) will be a creative decision. Because of a story they want to tell. Or because it suits an idea for a theme.

I happen to think they won't choose Liberty City (or Los Santos) again. I do suspect they will go somewhere else. But what you, I or anyone else thinks does not matter. If someone at Rockstar has a brilliant idea - too brilliant to ignore - that will dictate the location. Not some perceived pattern.

then they'll go back to los santos for GTA VII?

if they were to follow any sort of pattern, they've revisited both LC and LS in the HD universes, so with that it can only mean VC is up next, BUT like mentioned, VC is more about the era than the setting.

You'll see. You'll all see! Rockstar is not going outside of Liberty City, Vice City, or San Andreas. There will not ever be any other city other than the ones mentioned above.

I would do anything to sit in the meetings in Rockstar was they spit-ball ideas, proposals and debate where to take the series next. I would really hope that someone is doing an inside documentary on this. I wouldn't care if it came out next year or the year after or even in 10 years. But would just love to see something like that before I die and go whoah, lol.

I wonder what their workflow is. I read that they decide on a location first then work the story over/around it. I wonder do they ever have an incline of the theme when they chose the location or is the location really just the foundation before they even consider the story/theme.

Will WatchDogs 2 influence them not deciding on San Fierro? What deciding factors come in to play?

There's a great docu-series on Netflix (I think it's called Metropolis) and each episode focuses on a city. It's quite amazing. New York and San Fran are the first two episodes.

Ironically I have to give my vote to Vice City. Would definitely like to experience the Miami atmosphere in modern times and better graphics.

I may have posted this somewhere before but I'll post it again

There is more to America then just New York, Miami, and California. I'd like to see them do Detroit it's home to many factories and the American automobile industry why not set a game about stealing cars in a city where they make cars? Not only that the city has gone through some tough times and would be great for a dark gritty story.

Why not Boston where the American revolution pretty much started they also have a large Irish population and would make a great setting for a game dealing with the Irish mob. Guys like Whitey Bugler etc..

Philadelphia or Washington D.C would also be nice locations like Boston they also played an important role in starting the country, they have had problems with crime before and DC is the home of the Federal government R* could go nuts over here.

Atlanta is a pretty important city economically and is a dangerous ghetto. With it also being a Southern city they could also add in a rural area and make fun of a lot of redneck stereotypes.

A city based on Houston, Texas or Dallas/Fort Worth would be cool and funny R* could joke around with a lot of the stereotypes about Texans like the ten gallon hats they wear and everyone that lives there owning a gun.

Sometimes I always think it would be cool to have 3 cities, but the other 2 cities aren't US' cities (example: Vice City, London, and Tokyo in one game).

Anyway, here's my two cents:

Seattle

Detroit

Boston

Philadelphia

Chicago

New Orleans

Washington DC

Toronto

Vancouver

London

Tokyo

And of course, Vice City, San Fierro, Las Venturas, and Ludendroff.

But for the sake of topic, it will be really cool to see Boston in GTA 6.

For GTA VI I'm about 95% certain that it'll be set in Vice City, though not officially confirmed it's highly likely. I wouldn't mind seeing a return to Las Venturas or San Fierro, but I wouldn't mind seeing R* doing a different city for once such as:

-Chicago/Milwaukee

-Buffalo/Toronto

-Philadelphia/Camden,NJ(return to Alderney)

-Boston

-Jacksonville

-Dallas/FT Worth

-Atlanta

-San Diego/Tijuana

-Oakland/San Jose(especially if R* decides to return to SF as a primary city)

-Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia/Vancouver, CA

-Portland,OR/Vancouver,WA

-Reno/Carson City

-Phoenix/Tucson/Flagstaff

-Denver/Colorado Springs/Fort Collins

-Austin/San Antonio

-Houston

-Kansas City (both Kansas and Missouri)

-St Louis

-New Orleans/Baton Rouge

-Minneapolis/St Paul

-Green Bay

-Cleveland

-Cincinnati

-Nashville

-Memphis

-Key West/Havana (as part of a game where VC is the main city)

-Tampa/St Petersburg

-Charleston, SC

-Charlotte

-DC/Baltimore

-Pittsburgh

-Scranton/Wilkes Barre

-Atlantic City

-Newark(since Alderney in IV was essentially Jersey City)/Stamford,CT/Hempstead,NY/Westchester County/Putnam County/Rockland County/The Hudson Valley/Catskill region/Staten Island (future return to LC or Liberty State however you look at it)

-Anchorage

-Honolulu

I apologize for the length of the list and the number of some irrelevant major cities on here I just wanted to list as many as possible. Obviously R* won't do all or any of these, but you never know what future GTAs will be, but it's likely that GTA VI would be Vice City, I wouldn't be suprised if it was considering IV with Liberty City and V with Los Santos in HD

Chinese Takeout

Maybe we're thinking too small. Maybe it's time for Rockstar to take a stab at doing a miniature version of the United States, in lstead of a miniazure version of a major city.

I remember the first time I played Pilotwings64...how amazing it was to fly around Nintendo's mini version of America..complete with California, Seattle, the Rockies, Mt. Rushmore (with Mario carved into it), Sears Tower in Chicago, etc.

Maybe it's time to take the leap to that....GTA America. Or is it too soon? Is that a "next generation" thing?

Link to comment

It's not a 'next generation' thing and it has nothing to do with it. The issue is that it's very time consuming and costly to produce cities on the scale and detail that Rockstar does. Unless the process of designing a city can be automated and the result is produced within time constraints, then the idea of creating GTA America will not be a reality any day. It's hard to manually make two cities with the same details of IV and V, let alone the fact that the world creation in VI will get even more complex and with much more details, graphically and behaviorally (AI).

Chinese Takeout

Yeah, no, I get that. It would have to be a version of GTA unlike anything we've seen before. More like RDR1's "compression" of multiple American regions into one playable area.

Imagine GTA5...not multiplied by 50 (50 U.S. states), but multiplied by....5. An area roughly shaped like the USA, and divided into rough secions...Northwest/Southwest/Midwest/Southest/Northeast. With 2 mountain ranges on either side, a big river down the middle, and 5 or 6 Los Santo-sized cities spread around to represent some of the major cities mentioned in this thread, and 7-8 smaller towns or suburbs, as well as farmland and wilderness areas to fill out the map. A highway system and airports ties them all together.

Nowhere near as large as the entire U.S., but closer to what Nintendo accomplished 20 years ago mixed with current GTA standards.

But yeah, it's hard to see how it would all come together. It would take a LOT of people, resources & time to make it work.

EDIT: Then again, I could not have even imagined GTA5's level of size, density & realism back when GTA3 came out. Not even REMOTELY. ;-)

It would take a LOT of people, resources & time to make it work.

And that's why it shouldn't happen. GTA V took like 4 years to be developed and be ready for release, a large chunk of which went into the creation of the city and its surroundings, from field research down to creating the art, modeling and texturing the whole map, moving to populating it and creating culture- and neighborhood-based AI. You might argue that they could simply outsource the creation of cities to other teams around the world so that the project could be finished in 5 years, but they won't be able to achieve the quality that they always strive for. We both know that each main entry of GTA adds more layers of complexity and detail to world creation and if V's LS and its surroundings consumed 1 to 2 years of the overall development time, then it stands to reason that the world creation in VI will take even more time and R* always compensates for this by recruiting more employees as evident by their newly opened India-based studio.

If such a GTA project was to go under development, then expect a development time between 6 to 7 years and this is the most optimist opinion you will hear. Then, I guess that we will have to accept microtransactions creeping into single player as R* trying to compensate for the $600M budget that they spent on the game all these years. Buy more ammunition? hahaha, get a shark card for it. It will be bad business for them to charge only $60 for this game without taking more out of you using another way. Currently, the only feasible method for a multi-city GTA game would be in the form of downloadable contents. That means you get one full game with a city and possibly its surroundings, then 1 to 2 years later they finish making another city with a new story and missions and they release it for $30. Traveling between cities would be possible via airports.

I think it should be Vice City, or maybe even London (doubt that though, which is a bit of a shame).

Some people say Vice City wouldn't work outside of the old 80s era, but I think it could. Things don't need to be an abvious choice to work out well.

But the Rockstar of today is a little odd (in my opinion). I never thought they'd start numbering the Red Dead games, and I didn't think they'd do half the things they have with GTA Online, so ... It's anyone's guess (if they even make another game).

(I'm sorry for the double post, but these are two different post with two different points to make on two different location related topics. The two post format keeps the individual points separate and focused instead of each detracting from the other)

If we're going to break away from the usual Liberty City, Vice City, Los Santos, San Fierro and Las Venturas, I would LOVE to see a super huge map based on the midwest.

It should be mostly countryside, farm land and so forth, but also rust belt including at least two main cities which should be based on Chicago and Detroit. Also, I'd like to see them break new ground by making the game seasonal. So as you play, you get all four seasons of the year in a shortened cycle. Crucially, this should, of course, include snow.

This would be an awesome arena for GTA. As well as visiting the two main cities for key parts of the story, a whole section of the game could be set on the road across the vast expanse of America's heartland.

I believe that from these choises multiple cities is the winner. People who want it can't be satisfied without it, however those who voted VC would be satisfied, if the multiple cities included VC.

I think VC is going to be in gta next, however I don't think that it is enough on it's own. Multiple cities has been done before, but not a whole bunch of cities. V already included redneck hicks in Trevor and his friends, and so that can't be a theme, as it already was the theme in VCS. So It has to be something more political. Now that USA has Trump as the president, there is plenty to be mocked about his campaign, his ways of conducting business and so forth. Obama was boring as a target for mockery, because he didn't do anything that seemed stupid. Trump is the perfect butt of jokes. Trump moves around alot, so there would be plenty of opportunities to introduce new cities to the series.

Cockstar please.

Please stop trying to look cool by throwing in some gangsta elements into the mix and hoping it would be a success. You already did that with SA and it brought you a whole load of cash.

Better feature VC as the next city you dogsh*ts or I might just have to pay a visit to your office with a bomb vest.

No way.

Countryside is good if it's in a RDD game, the GTA team simply can't integrate the countryside to a city properly. Even SA's countryside was better and it was from the 3D era.

I mean, look at V. It's f*cking dogsh*t and the countryside is a pos with retarded ass animals who try to deliberately jump in front of your vehicle.

Watching hair grow on my anus is more interesting than exploring V's countryside.

It means that I don't feel a sense of continuity traversing from LS to the countryside. The countryside looks rather rushed to me. But of course, you may not share the same opinion.
