Do you play "Ghetto Mario Kart" aka GTA races or not? Why do or don't you play them? How would you improve them?

I myself don't, with the primary reason being the ability to exit the vehicle during the race which as someone who has played way too much Mario Kart, Crash Team Racing and Carmageddon to name a few, takes away from the appeal. The lack of variety in powerups is also disappointing but not a barrier to entry.

Something along the lines of these would probably convince me to try out GTA races again;

1) Option to turn off the ability to leave the vehicle.

2) More powerups. Doesn't have to be anything too crazy ala Mario Kart, but things like creating oil slicks or dropping spike strips and police barricade that appears on a checkpoint ahead of a rival player.

I do play, I think its fine that you can leave your car, like if yours is rammed to bits you can steal another one. Don't think it requires anymore pickups or power up, infact id rather the pickups currently there are removed. So we just drive our own car and can use our own vehicles. much more fun.

EDIT: don't play often, just whenever I hit random race if it puts me into one with a bunch of players ill stay in it. I don't mind playing all the game modes.

MK (& to a lesser extent diddy kong racing) are the only games in that genre I've ever found worthwhile. Tbh MK has perfected it it many times over & I never much bother w/games which try & imitate it to any degree. They just don't carry it off with the same fun or variety & gta races are no different in not measuring up. It's just not the right fit unless you design courses & power-up's balanced for that game type + on gta you lose a lot from the plaintive character models whereas MK offers a whole other level of tactical depth just on character selection alone.

I avoid it on gta but adore MK.

Certain tracks are a lot of fun to play in GTA mode.

Arms Race is a boring track, but if I'm hosting and people choose it in the voting screen, then I'll make it a GTA race. 5 laps, wanted levels on, night, rain, SUVs. Always a lot of fun. :)

Not usually. It depends on the track really, some do work well with GTA. I'm not a huge fan of pick-ups though tbh, I preferred GTA IV's style of GTA Races, where everyone had stock vehicles, and everyone used SMG's etc.

I think GTA races are great when done properly.

For instance a point to point race can struggle for fun coz if you get blown up it can be difficult to get back in the race.

GTA races are best when they have a good few laps, giving all a chance to catch up and turn it around (one of the best things about MK, right?)

Also if they have a crossover, as an opportunity to increase the mayhem.

Totally agree they need to introduce another power up. I think oil slick sounds great, so that your car has a definite loss of control effect if you hit one. Or machine guns, that work like rockets, you fire off a spurt either forwards or backwards. Hell, its already in the programming on the JB700!

Best GTA race I had was on that race Four-Way Madness, which I haven't seen in a while, but set to 6 laps and with it set up as GTA Rally. I was the passenger shooting my AP pistol like crazy, was so much fun.

Also agree to having an option for turning off the ability to leave your vehicle, as you can sometimes get the loser deciding to just go postal instead of racing. Saying that, I got my Ride or Die tattoo by stopping to when I was in the lead on this one race, capping two more fools (had already stickied one) and going on to win.

The thing about GTA Races is like how the dude above me said, it can be extremely hard to get back into the race if too far behind. Out of what I experienced, if everyone behind you is busy exploding each other and you get out of the chaos at the beginning of the race, you're pretty much set if you're ahead enough of the pack. Now that I think about it, GTA races really might be the only instance in which catch-up is actually acceptable, since 1st place spot would be changing constantly regardless due to people exploding left and right.

I've actually heard of people holding back in the beginning, keeping themselves behind the pack so they can just pick them off one-by-one with the rockets. I honestly think maybe a "blue shell" type of powerup would make it more interesting, so whoever is in first-place just doesn't get a guaranteed win. I never understood why someone would want to leave their car though, but again, I've played few GTA Races and earned the Ride or Die tattoo by just getting a friend to let me blow them up three times.

Like Bandalamente said, the best GTA Races are the ones on tracks with multiple laps & crossovers. If it's a point to point like The Commute or Grass Route, you can practically kiss 1st place goodbye if you're taken out at the start.

In all honesty though, I think GTA Races are best with like-minded people/friends and not randoms, because they allow you to get creative. With randoms, it usually just devolves into 2 people racing and the rest either leaving or getting in the way just because. A few of my friends and I ran into some chill people a while back and we had the best series of races that i've ever partaken in on GTA: O. We raced utilities and things got really interesting because some teams would have one person on foot trying to sabotage drivers who passed by, and the driver would ditch their golf cart/faggio/airtug etc. for a car/bike off the street. We even did a footrace once and it was friggin hilarious truth be told./ramble

The one thing that I really disagree with, not only with GTA Races but the game in general, is being able to chuck stickies from moving vehicles. It's ridiculous that you can throw them farther while speeding at 90 MPH than you can on foot. I know GTA has never been about hyper realism, but it's beyond absurd that someone can toss an explosive at the person in front of them and score a kill when on the move.

On the subject of powerups, they should have ripped a page from Midnight Club and just implemented the ones in there. Those made races/ctf really interesting, varied, and fun.

A proper GTA race should be chaotic, so Catch-Up On, Traffic On, and Wanted Levels On are a must. Point-to-Point is pointless in a GTA race unless it doubles back on itself. Crossovers are good, and shorter laps make for better races too.

I would like the ability to place Actors in the race creator and make the players be pursued by AI's in Buzzards, Annihilators and Lazer Jets.

Also, I would like to add heavy rain. Immense hail storms, thick foggy conditions and lightning. Imagine lightning hitting a tree, setting it on fire and making it collapse on the road in-front of you.

Or having your car hit by lightning.

You know those large movable boulders in the mountains? I want rock slides to appear.

I want extremes.

Sometimes with the crew, haven't tried it enough to know if you can set it so that you don't use your actual weapons but the ones(well Rockets) that are on the track instead.. I'd enjoy it much more if that were the case

and of course if R* added others into it as well

This is somewhat the opposite of what the OP wants, but the absolute most fun I had with GTA races was in GTA:IV events where people DID get out of their cars.

8 laps of Horse Punch or Stars in their Eyes or at the airport, you were always close to other players, weapons were pickup only (so no firing that SMG or throwing a sticky until you find one!), and decent rewards/points for kills. This meant if you were not leading the pack, you could still do well and have a lot of fun. Right now in GTA races in this game, there isn't much motivation for that war, it is closer to Mario Kart right now than what I remember.

I'd totally support a Mario Kart style, but I'd seriously love a GTA:IV chaos style too!

I don't race them. I don't like being blown up by someone slower than me.

If they had guns only and no missiles it would be better.

Swerve when you hear the noise.

Try to pickup rockets first

Throw 'nades out your window

Alternatively go behind them, shoot them with rockets, then race as fast as you want.

Might still not be your thing, but if you work it with a bit of strategy you can win quite often. I like to mix up serious racing with silly occasionally.

I hate it when I get t all the stickies and missiles directed at me but love it when they blow each other up so much that I slip by and win the race.

JOEsAGGRESSIVE

I'd like GTA race better if you could use a baseball bat while on a two wheeler. Also, does anybody know if you can create a race that is strictly GTA style? Design the track and everything specifically for it.

On topic, I only play GTA Race if the host chooses it and it's on a pretty good track.

I like leaving the vehicle because it gave me the option once to switch from a stock compact to an F620 in the middle of a race.

Yeah any race you make, you usually set down GTA pickup markers so it can be played in either mode.

Then you'd make GTA the default race type.

Trouble is most people seem to get their panties in a twist with it - so you'll get quite a few dislikes (that's what I've seen - maybe other people have seen different)

I agree with the op. Why I don't mind the gta race it's kind of stuck between serious and silly and I reckon it needs some more "wacky" pick ups to put it firmly in the silly camp and make it a lot more fun.

Nope. f*cking sticky-bombers.

Well, you must suck if you get blown up by one during a race.

Sharp turn or tight alleyway coming up ahead. Someone is in front of you. He placed a bomb at the exact position of where there is only one way to get through.

Please, share your vast knowledge on how to avoid it.

How about stopping and let it explode, moron?
