MattDet
Well, another bad event just took place in Detroit-but this time, it's massive flooding across the region. MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WJBK) - In Madison Heights, like many areas of Metro Detroit, flooding left cars floating and motorists stranded Monday night.Fox 2's Robin Schwartz was at 12 Mile and Campbell where cars were stuck everywhere following between four and seven inches of rain. Some motorists helped push a stalled car to safety with the water up to their hips.Other drivers who did not get stuck, took extreme measures - driving up on the sidewalk - to get through. But dozens were not so lucky as everywhere one looked, there was flooding. http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/story/26254377/flooding-submerges-cars-covers-streets-in-madison-heights ROSEVILLE, Mich. (WJBK) - A Fox 2 crew tried to get to Madison Heights but didn't get very far Monday night. At 13 mile and Roseville the water was three feet deep with many surrounding roads closed. As night fell, the water in many areas has receded, but leaves behind a trail of stalled vehicles and frustrated motorists. "That's a lot of water, a lot - more than a swimming pool," said one man who had been towing cars out until he got stuck at 13 mile and Groesbeck. In St. Clair Shores there were more cars stalled out and people forced to walk. Lakeland Street was aptly named with water spilling into backyards. From there to Oak Park, Royal Oak, Madison Heights the story was the same.In Roseville there were four reports of people needing rescue from falling into manholes where the covers had floated away. Residents were advised to not walk on the streets. http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/story/26254798/east-side-deals-with-second-round-of-flooding-in-week ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WXYZ) -- The Detroit Zoo will be closed on Tuesday thanks to Monday's record-breaking rainfall.According to the zoo, all animals are secure and there are no concerns with animal welfare.Flooding caused damage to some facilities and equipment, including the Arctic Ring of Life, boilers in other buildings, and technical equipment.Crews are currently evaluating all areas of the zoo to begin cleanup efforts and repairs. The Detroit Zoo is expected to reopen with regular business hours on Wednesday. http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/story/26256793/detroit-zoo-closed-due-to-flooding-damage CITY OF DETROIT - On I-96 just west of Wyoming, traffic is light but moving slowly and every so often, the sound of sirens can be heard.Drivers are still being rescued while MDOT and Michigan State Police are asking all motorists to stay off the road.Heavy rains pounded Metro Detroit for hours and stranded traffic in every direction. On Detroit's west side the rain was so heavy it seemed to be coming from the ground up - as basements everywhere flooded.Water made its way into basements in the area of St. Lawrence and Kirkwood.Heavy rains were not just concentrated on the city of Detroit as reports streamed in from everywhere. One stranded driver said her wait with AAA was three hours due to so many other calls. On man Fox 2 spoke with went to Home Depot on the west side for a water pump, but the store was all sold out. http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/story/26254478/streets-and-basements-flooded-in-detroit Many freeways in the area are still flooded-as well as many underpasses. In fact, a flood warning is still in effect until 3 PM for my county. My backyard flooded to levels unseen in a long time. Here's pictures of the devastation in my city: Here's a flooded freeway: Another flooded underpass: Full slideshow: http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/slideshow?widgetid=123695&slideshowimageid=

universetwisters
Holy damn, that's awful. With all this rain and flooding going on, I'm surprised nothing happened here in Florida yet. Now watch as a Category 5 hurricane wipes out my neighborhood Fraizer and Flachbau

MattDet
Here's another slideshow: http://media.thenewsherald.com/2014/08/12/major-flooding-targets-downriver-area/#31 Plus, several minutes ago, the local NBC station, WDIV, reported that a mudslide shut down the Southfield Freeway (M-39) in Detroit. Yes, a mudslide in an area that's not mountainous at all. In addition, another report on that station mentioned that the flooding in the suburb of Warren (another place I used to live in) got so bad someone considered calling the National Guard! I'm serious. Despite this, however, I heard that the Detroit Department of Transportation and the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation bus services will operate normally today. RoadRunner71
At least residents will be able to repel the looters simply sinking their canoes.
Hmmm nice bike
Being that it's Detroit, at least nothing will look any more damaged than it already is after the flooding is over. D- Ice and Toke
Trinette
I live in metro Detroit in the city of Dearborn and it's just been f*cking terrible these past two days. I was really close to not getting home last night because all my usual routes had areas that were completely flooded since I live on a bit of a lower elevation. I managed to eventually find a route home and just when I thought it was over, my entire neighborhood was pretty much flooded block after block in ankle-high water. It's raining again right now as I type this but it's nowhere near as bad as yesterday. My basement also flooded a bit and it broke the water heater. Woohoo cold showers. D- Ice 1 sometimes. you look very strange. somewhat smiling. a little vain. saying not today.
GTA_stu
I got flooded badly in 2007, it was right up to the nipple line in a lot of places down my street and above your head in others. We had to get pulled out by the coast guard on a boat. It was crazy times. Getting flooded is really horrible, it takes ages to get your house back to normal as well. Took us about a year. MattDet
I visited a Meijer store today-a small part of the parking lot was still flooded, plus they completely sold out of all cleaning supplies! And here's a freeway interchange as it appeared after yesterday. Edited August 12, 2014 by MattDet

MattDet
Okay, so what in the world is going on here? The exact same storm system that caused the Detroit floods is now flooding the New York City area, as well as other areas of the eastern seaboard. Rainfall amounts reached 13.26 inches at Long Island MacArthur Airport between midnight and 8 a.m., according to a preliminary estimate by the National Weather Service. http://pix11.com/2014/08/13/long-island-city-saturated-by-more-than-12-inches-of-rain/ Go ahead and rename this topic to "Flooding in Detroit and the East Coast" (without the quotes). GunWrath
Didn't Detroit just receive a bailout not long ago as well? Seems like a majority of it will be spent on recovery now.
