I'd give the single player a decent 6/10. Not bad, but disappointing by Rockstar's high standards of great single player games, it still has its moments though.

7.5 Short story-line, mediocre characters who end up being forgettable after 2 hours or so

+1 for the voice acting

+1 for leaving things to do after the storyline that gives us about 5+ hours of playtime minimum

That rating is pretty much on par with the handheld titles, probably lower since I had more fun playing those than this crap.

Thankfully that rating isn't based on the entire game itself, including Online.. otherwise I'd see a mid 5, this is just based on the singleplayer.

I gave them a 6.5 to 6.9 because f*ck this game that's catered to call of duty children.

The 6.5 I gave them is pretty generous as it is, there is no real stealth gameplay, a lack of criminal activities, no heists, no replayability whatsoever. Their shooting mechanics are complete ass, the weapon wheel is ridiculous I mean who decided it was a good idea to pull an entire arsenal out of our asses? f*ck rockstar. They sold the f*ck out.

no replayability whatsoever.

1) What?

2) There is, but if you don't like it, then you don't like it.

Saying no heists is silly because there are a few but I will say this. There really is only 1 heist that fits the "pursuit of the almighty dollar" theme that Rockstar put out there. Most of them are done for the FIB or to pay off a Mexican drug lord.

Dude, I was lead to believe this was going to be like Payday 2, it is only a sad reflection of what it used to be. Rockstar execs can go die in a hole in the desert. f*ck them.

How were you lead to believe that? The story was said to revolve around heists, not be ALL heists.

It`s a 10/10 for me even with it`s myriad of flaws and oversights.

I gave it a 9 because it's not even fully released yet. With the CG version and the DLC we have no real knowledge of, I don't feel it's fair to give it my final verdict yet. That said, what I've played (which is a lot) has been incredibly good fun and very satisfying. I feel it's a true GTA game, in as much as it's innovated, set high standards and plays really, really well (for the way I want to play).

I'm expecting my rating will go up when we've got all of the content.

Signatures are dumb anyway.

Gave it 9.

It's a truly great game but I don't want to play it constantly like I did Red Dead.

Sssssshhh. Every time someone mentions Red Dead I have to replay it.

Goddammit. That's my next few weeks of plans out the window. THANKS, SCUBA STEPHEN.

I'd give it a 8.5/10. Considering its stupid story and inconsistent physics (arcady on driving, realistic on movement, for example). but its technical achievement (dude, it ran on a console from 2005-2006!).

Gotta love that realistic jumping dive maneuver!

The poll results seem to be placing it somewhere around the 8-9/10 mark. Overall, I think that's a really impressive score. The handful of <5 scores, I think, are posted by people who are either just trying to skew the overall result, or are trying to make some kind of impotent protest about the game. I really don't feel they're giving an honest score.

why do you 80s and 90s kids like a game having a great storyline? is that a new trend or what? because my grandson is also the same.Games in the late 60s and 70s if i can remember didnt have a goddamn story and we still love them.I am guessing the millenial generations (80s and 90s) are just spoilt.

This might be better off somewhere else, as it's a pretty broad topic and isn't really right for this thread. That said:

I'd say that games are entering a new era - kind of like the French new wave of cinema, where people were telling stories in new ways, where stories started to become much more human, detailed. I see this in games a lot now - where a story pins together a great set of game mechanics.

Games have surpassed the wow-factor of Pong and Space Invaders, where we would see rudimentary shapes on screen and be impressed, not considering the thin-at-best narrative that held it all together. As games mature and the tech can give a more realistic or more fantastic world, the narrative has to be suitable. So, a deeper story is required to force bigger, better situations, set pieces and so on. There's also the constant striving to create emotion with games, much as movies have done as they've matured.

Think of it like this, keeping in mind the parallel between games and movies. In the early days, again, I'm using Pong as a reference here, the games were essentially on the same level as the early silent movies. They didn't need to convey much as people were impressed by the very presence of new technology. Now, with technology racing ahead, faster than games can be developed, we're seeing people wield the ability to create huge and detailed worlds - a world that's full of life and rich with detail wouldn't feel right without a grand story to tell.

At least, that's how I see it. Now that games are almost at the interactive movie stage, we're seeing really strong writing come to the forefront, as games can now tell a better and more engaging story than a lot of films.

Signatures are dumb anyway.

Most games are driven by the narrative construct that surrounds them, without something interesting to drive the player forward, what is compelling you to move on and continue playing?
