Where are all the older players?

First real effort at multiplayer gaming was me and a mate round a Spectrum 48k trying to play Gauntlet - problems in Los Santos don't really measure up

What were people's retro faves ?

Head over Heels and Spindizzy on Spectrum and Sentinel and Populus on Atari ST for me

Why is it all I seem to find and play with are 15 year olds and younger? Where the hell are the players over 20 years old? Not that I have an issue with the younger generation but where the hell are the parents and why the hell are they playing this game?

As an "older" player, I can tell you from experience that we have learned to choose our battles carefully. I usually do not make my presence known in a lobby, unless I hear other "older" players, or people that just hold normal conversation rather than the typical trolling and agitating. If it sounds like a relatively normal room, I turn my mic on. Otherwise I unplug it so I don't have to hear and deal with nonsense.

My partner is a bit younger (mid 20s) - so she gets excited when she hears the Doom theme coming from my work room - got an IPX network setup so we can play multiplayer.

Not sure I personally have any real favorites, these days I tend to do almost all my gaming on new gear :( Games I used to play a lot as when younger though - the original Need for Speed, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D - not really retro - before that era I just played whatever I could get my hands on. Me and my father used to play Dangerous Dave on the Amstrad almost daily though in the 8 bit era.

Here :D Really the game is rated 18+ and I mostly run into kids. Or the kids are the only ones with mics. ^^

I bet I'm not the only one who remembers this:

Micro League Baseball on the C64 is still the greatest sports game of all time (with NHL '94 on the Genesis a close second).

Twenty eight here. I play with any age as long as I can have a tolerable conversation with them.

Last Ninja, Last Ninja Remix, IO and Skake or Die on c64, Speedball 2, Elite and ATR on Amiga, Jet set willy(s) Spectrum and loads more to be honest, i seemed to like a lot more games back then, but then again i never ever played any of them continuously for 9 odd months like i do GTAO

Not just older players are gone in GTA onlinne, but for the past 4 months most players I join jobs with are low level noobs below level 50.

I guess people are getting bored with this game. But I don't think R* cares one bit about this.

in all fairness i started playing GTA when i was 11 but to be honest i dont know how parent let their kids play this type of game online.

i let my 2 kids(11 & 5) play in sp but not online, for 2 things, first i dont want them to get frustrated/stressed by all the griefin and 2 because they would just mess up my stats!

Which gta did you start playing at 11? original in 97 making you around 28, gta 2 in 99 making you around 26, or more then likely 3 in 2001?

I ask because if it was 3, as I assume, that makes you around 24 & you have an 11 year old? you had a child at 13? Even at best case senerio you had a kid around the age of 18! I'd say playing this game at an early age effected you alright!

I don't think playing a violent 3D shooter encourages teen pregnancy.

That's a bit of a jump.

Maybe if they played the violent 3D shooter instead of going to the chemists to buy birth control stuff?

If you get this reference from the first two lines of dialogue alone, congratulations you are old, amazingly awesome and/or both.

Cheers!

ARTHUR: Old woman!
DENNIS: Man!
ARTHUR: Old Man, sorry. What knight live in that castle over there?
DENNIS: I'm thirty seven.
ARTHUR: What?
DENNIS: I'm thirty seven -- I'm not old!
ARTHUR: Well, I can't just call you `Man'.
DENNIS: Well, you could say `Dennis'.
ARTHUR: Well, I didn't know you were called `Dennis.'
DENNIS: Well, you didn't bother to find out, did you?
ARTHUR: I did say sorry about the `old woman,' but from the behind
you looked--
DENNIS: What I object to is you automatically treat me like an inferior!
ARTHUR: Well, I AM king...
DENNIS: Oh king, eh, very nice. An' how'd you get that, eh? By
exploitin' the workers -- by 'angin' on to outdated imperialist dogma
which perpetuates the economic an' social differences in our society!
If there's ever going to be any progress--
WOMAN: Dennis, there's some lovely filth down here. Oh -- how d'you do?
ARTHUR: How do you do, good lady. I am Arthur, King of the Britons.
Who's castle is that?
WOMAN: King of the who?
ARTHUR: The Britons.
WOMAN: Who are the Britons?
ARTHUR: Well, we all are. we're all Britons and I am your king.
WOMAN: I didn't know we had a king. I thought we were an autonomous
collective.
DENNIS: You're fooling yourself. We're living in a dictatorship.
A self-perpetuating autocracy in which the working classes--
WOMAN: Oh there you go, bringing class into it again.
DENNIS: That's what it's all about if only people would--
ARTHUR: Please, please good people. I am in haste. Who lives
in that castle?
WOMAN: No one live there.
ARTHUR: Then who is your lord?
WOMAN: We don't have a lord.
ARTHUR: What?
DENNIS: I told you. We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take
it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week.
ARTHUR: Yes.
DENNIS: But all the decision of that officer have to be ratified
at a special biweekly meeting.
ARTHUR: Yes, I see.
DENNIS: By a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs,--
ARTHUR: Be quiet!
DENNIS: --but by a two-thirds majority in the case of more--
ARTHUR: Be quiet! I order you to be quiet!
WOMAN: Order, eh -- who does he think he is?
ARTHUR: I am your king!
WOMAN: Well, I didn't vote for you.
ARTHUR: You don't vote for kings.
WOMAN: Well, 'ow did you become king then?
ARTHUR: The Lady of the Lake,
[angels sing]
her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur
from the bosom of the water signifying by Divine Providence that I,
Arthur, was to carry Excalibur.
[singing stops]
That is why I am your king!
DENNIS: Listen -- strange women lying in ponds distributing swords
is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power
derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical
aquatic ceremony.
ARTHUR: Be quiet!
DENNIS: Well you can't expect to wield supreme executive power
just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
ARTHUR: Shut up!
DENNIS: I mean, if I went around sayin' I was an empereror just
because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me they'd
put me away!
ARTHUR: Shut up! Will you shut up!
DENNIS: Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system.
ARTHUR: Shut up!
DENNIS: Oh! Come and see the violence inherent in the system!
HELP! HELP! I'm being repressed!
ARTHUR: Bloody peasant!
DENNIS: Oh, what a give away. Did you here that, did you here that,
eh? That's what I'm on about -- did you see him repressing me,
you saw it didn't you?

tl;dr - I'm not dead yet.

36 and ticking. I don't allow my kids 7&10 to play.

And if they're around when I play, the volume is all the way down. If they were to speak like the little sh*ts that I hear on GTAO, I'd kick their asses up over their ears.

Im glad this thread turned out to be a positive one. And im also glad you guys opened up told your age and now I dont feel like an old ahole. I avoid telling my age in lobbies because I dont want most of these little kids trying to judge me.

Not that I have two sh*ts what they think. I just dont need to tell them my life story and how I got to be so "old"

lol, it's like they think we got old on purpose

I used to catch flak from the IT guys at school for putting Halo CE on all the computers in the lab for some Red vs Blue king of the hill action.

Good times.

I got it by the 4th line, so I guess that makes me young and simply awesome, right?

First online gaming experience was mechwarrior 1 on my 386.

Then to Warcraft1/2, and C&C

Golden Eye local play.

Starcraft.

CS and DoD cal-i legend.

Then I fell off, until stealing Cod:mw from my ex-gfs brother.

Golden Eye local play.

That's multiplayer right there. Played that, and also have fond memories of the original Mario Kart with four people sharing a tiny tv screen split into 4.

I have repressed memories of Golden Eye.

Mostly because of that cheap ass Asian f*ck called Odd Job D:<

The original DOOM on an IPX network was my first real taste of multiplayer. As far as gaming, I go back to 1988 with Golgo 13 on NES and F/18 Hornet on the Atari 7800.
