There are many characters in the HD universe that could act as quite interesting protagonists to play as. I personally really liked the McCreary family in 4, but unfortunately the fate of most of them is determinant, hence they are not very likely to return as protagonists. The only one of that family that does not have a possibility to die as of yet is Gerald/Gerry (as he is incarcerated). Gordon Sargent perhaps, although he is just one of the many characters that could provide an insightful narative. A few of the heist members (Gus Motta, Taliana Martinez etc.) have been mentioned as possibilities.

 

Slightly off topic: I would like to see Madrazo return as a more serious antagonist, somehow feel like he needs a chance to redeem himself. During most of his appearances, he seemed quite intimidating, but in his final appearance he acted like a total wuss, much to my chagrin..

 

How funny would it be if Patricia decides to leave Martin after he mistreats her again and goes back to Trevor. Madrazo goes completely ballistic, using all of his power and sources to try and destroy Trevor's drug empire (so Trevor v.s. Madrazo Cartel, just an idea). If R* would want to make it completely over the top and ridiculous, they should add a certain character as a female protagonist: PATRICIA MADRAZO!! ''No Mr. Trevor, you not kill him, this Maricon is all mine'' (half-kidding, it would be a bit too much but most definitely very funny)

We've seen enough of Lance Vance, Catalina, Salvatore Leone, Phil Cassidy, and Ricardo Diaz. It's time for us to use a character that either barely had a role in the games they appeared in or a minor role. In other words, I think Ryder should have his own game. His background is unknown and we never get to know what got him into smoking that weed, not to mention he was killed off the game way too soon in a perfunctory manner. So Ryder having his own game would be more interesting.

Well, I can tell you what got Ryder into smoking weed (but PCP is actually the stuff he smokes throughout the game): the hood did... simple as that. I like the way you think regarding that certain characters already had a sufficient amount of screen time. However, I personally am not too fond of the idea of playing as a character that we know will die in the near future (Vic Vance was the other), especially not if this character is a spineless rat like Ryder who would sell out his childhood friend for just another bit of smoke and cash. IMO it would have to be a character that has barely been explored thus far, yet had some screentime in a game already. It's very unlikely (in fact nearly impossible) that R* will come back to characters from the 3D era, as this is a different continuum than the HD era we are in now.

Sweet-I´m interested to see what was going on with GSF in the late 80s,how did CJs younger brother die,why did he had to move to LC and how did Ballas become stronger,and I think Sweet has some potential to be a protagonist from whose perspective we could see that story

Cesar-it would be interesting to see a story of a Latino gangster in GTA(I know there was Luis in TBOGT,but he was more just a bodyguard and a night club bouncer than an active gangster)

Salvatore Leone-I would like to see young Salvatore Leone as a protagonist in a game set maybe somewhere in the 70s,see him rise through the ranks of the Leone crime family,maybe get the rank of a leader after his father dies or becomes too old for crime...

Big Mitch Baker-would be cool to see how he started his gang in the 70s or what happens to him in the late 80s-early 90s

Umberto Robina-it would also be cool to see how he moved from Cuba to Vice City and started a gang

HD universe:

Dwayne Forge-I think it would be interesting to see his story from the 80s-early 90s before he got in jail

Terry and Clay-it would be cool to have them as protagonists set between TLAD and GTA 5,to see why TLMC moved from Alderney to SA,how they took control of southern SA from the AOD(in TLAD they were said to be in control of SA),how did TLMC meet Trevor and why did Johnny got back with Ashley and started using drugs

Malc-He could show(for now not well known)world of urban sport bike riding biker gangs in GTA,maybe we could see how he and DeSean joined the Uptown Riders a few years before the setting of GTA TLAD or what is going on with them now

Packie-maybe have him as protagonist in a game set before the setting of GTA 4,to see what was going on with the Irish mob before they got help from Niko

Jacob and Badman-it would be interesting to see what is going on with them now

i'm gonna get a lot of hate from this, but i would love to see the history of a young Trevor Phillips, he would have a toned down personality and his background interests me, the air force , terrible childhood, drifter life, the event where he meets Michael and various heists all over the border with him.

Packie Mcreary needs a game too, he's one of my favorite supporting characters ever,he has a dark background and the irish mob hasn't been explored much in gta.

no, it would be the Johnny K/Victor Vance fiasco all over again, they create a great character to turn him into a unrecognizable mess out of nowhere.

Agreed. Although Ryder is my favorite character of the game, I would much rather have him re-appear as a NP main character, have a role similar to Cesar Vialpando in GTA SA. So playing as either B-Dup or Big Bear would make more sense.

He is only ever heard on the phone but is the leader of the Diablos Gang in GTA III.

He is mentioned in Vice City and seen in advertising, depicted as a mural/graffiti in GTA IV and has two roads which are probably named after him in GTA V.

His influence probably even goes back to GTA 1, as although they're different universes, the character design and voice likeness is uncanny.

We know he is a also former porn actor and distributor with a probable beastiality fetish.

As far as we know he is still alive, so could make for an interesting back story with the possible option of other previous GTA characters and/or gangs returning.

I think Mikhail Faustin would make a great protag. How he arrived in LC along with his family and Dimitri, setting up his organisation and how he became addicted to cocaine. Another reason for Mikhail as a protagonist is that the end of game mostly the protagonist is rich and powerful (except some) and mikhail has got everything, a big house, sports car, etc.
