80's Revival:Vaporwave/ Synthwave/Retrowave/Chillwave/Darkwave/Electro

@UnitronDeltaNo probs. I can hear the hip hop inspiration now that you mention it. It's hard to be different and won't be to everyones taste so don't be put off by too much critique. Synthwave is insanely varied and open to interpretation so here's hoping you'll find your groove. Just take your time as you are new, but so is Synthwave. Have you ever heard of Vaporwave?

Yes, I know vaporwave, although to be honest I always had a hard time drawing a clear line between all of the nostalgia-based electro music genres. I guess that vapor differs from synthwave in ithat it often uses samples plus it draws elements also from later popculture than the 80s and early 90s?

It has become a catch all term for modern synth inspired tunes that carries no form or is hard to classify. It originated from DUB Step, House, Chill Wave, et al, but like the term indie it is an easy dumping ground for the hard to classify. It might be worth paddling in that pool to see if there's an inspiration.

Some old uploads from Electronic Gems popped up in my Youtube recommendations, most notably Laster. The songs have a pretty sweet laid back feel to it.

His/her/their ''Beat Tapes'' are also on Spotify btw

Haven't been on GTAForums for a while, went dark while playing RDR2's story mode. Anyway, here's some stuff I've discovered in the meantime.

If you haven't checked out GUNSHIP's new album, Dark All Day, please do. It's really great. The clip above is also amazing, featuring fans of GUNSHIP paying homage to famous 80s movie scenes.

I have checked out Gunship's Dark all Day. There are plenty of good tunes. There were a couple didn't tickle me, but on the whole it's excellent (there's no pleasing everyone :p:D )

Liked the talking heads cover, but I still need to listen to the others :)

So NewRetroWave has their own radio page where you can listen to all the full albums they also upload on Youtube, https://radio.newretrowave.com/ Pretty nifty.

Hi Shaundi. Haven't I seen you somewhere in here before? It seems so long ago :p:D

Welcome to the party :) Nice find to add to the slow growing list here in the Synthwave archive. :)

I was just about to post that! Haha, I love it. The beat is so raw and pure Gunship. I always love the intro narration.

I kind of thought you might. Truth be I spotted it by chance as a recommendation and thought to drop it in just in case as it was a good song and change of pace from their last outing. In any case Gunship is always welcome and there's a world of interesting creations out there.

Happy Hunting :)

Something SAW would be jealous of. Kinda ripe for a good voice over.

Also as an aside I was watching a vid an a question was asked in relation to a story of a guy going back in time having known the songs of the beatles to a time before the band was formed. The question was how things would be different for the music of today. The question was expanded by the co host to ask how 80's music would be changed if the songs in this thread were taken back in time.

Kind of odd how NRW decided to upload Roller Coaster when the song was released somewhere in 2017.

Also if songs in this thread would be able to travel back to the '80s, Synthwave would've been a lot more mainstream these days. 😁

Good point. Would that have been a bad thing or a good? Does the niche mystique give in more gravitas or does synthwave stand on it's own merit, deserving of more attention?

Didn't know roller coaster was as old. I suppose NRW have a back catalogue of sorts. Wonder if NWR really does go back to the 80' ;):D

P.S there seems a tit for tat between Luigi and NWR for when songs appear (kind of handy). Most songs will appear on both eventually so there seems to be better than average coverage. Prime Thantos seems to be a bit more niche with a more selective mix. There are a few smaller channels there to fill a few gaps. Who would you list as the bigger acts in Synthwave?

So far I'm pulling up

Timecop 83

Wolf and Raven

FM84

Gunship

Dana Jean Phoenix

Dance With the Dead

Zombie Hyperdrive

ORAX

Kavinski

Am I forgetting any?

Yeah, I only noticed the odd upload of Marvel83''s song because I've had it on my phone for a long time now, thanks to Luigi.

Honestly I'd be all for it if Synthwave and its subgenres appealled to a wider audience. Often I hear a song and think it would make for a great Summer hit or something, but you just know you'll never hear it on mainstream radio.

In terms of the more well known artists in the scene, I would add:

- HOME

- FM Attack

- LAZERHAWK

- Lifelike

- Quitoxic

- Miami Nights 1984

- The Midnight

- Morgan Willis

- Futurecop!

The first five have at least one song on Youtube with a few million views, having at least some sort of mainstream popularity.

A few classics;

These classics bring me back to the summer of 2016, when I really started to get into Synthwave. Good times
