The album ''Atlas'' (which features this song) in its entirety is definitely worth a listen.

I found out about The Midnight, Boy do they make some good music, however one track is slightly out of place on the Endless Summer Album.

It sounds like sound I would hear in an high-end car dealership in a new Test Drive Unlimited game, if they ever make a 3rd one.

Nice song. I've checked out some of Midnights other vids and they are very good. Another egular who produce good content are Tokyo Rose.

On another topic (and I may have asked this before) but who is that in your avatar?

What do you people think about vocals in retrowave? In my opinion, vocals generally make a retrowave song worse, although there are some exceptions, for example, vocals make this song much better:

I'm okay with it as long as it's incorporated in a good way. That's a really bland answer, but that's how I feel about it. I know some retro wave songs that are amazing, but don't feature any vocals at all. Then on the other hand there are retrowave songs which sound incredible, partly because there are vocals in the song which sound great. So I'm fine with it either way.

Example of a great song without lyrics;

Mister Pink

I have to disagree on that last part. To my ears it doesn't sound like synthwave. To me that Kraftwerk song is pure eletronic and Giorgio Moroder is more electronic dance. In my opinion synthwave is its own genre and it differs from the songs from the 70s-80s. Of course it has a similar feeling to it, the whole point of synthwave is to bring back that 80s vibe. But it also incorporates more modern techniques, for example placing the kick drum and bassline more prominently in the mix. This mix of retro vibes and modern techniques is what makes it a standalone genre for me, with its own founders.

Anyway hkboondoggle mentioned FM-84's album Altas, which indeed is an amazing album. This is probably one of my favorites from said album;

For sure man. You are right, the whole point is to bring it back and with modern techniques. And you made a great point.. putting the basline and kick more predominately in the mix. I recently asked myself what Kraftwerk would have thought of Aphex Twin.. going off topic a little. Ralf Hutter, founding member of Kraftwerk said percussion shouldn't come in to the foreground. That's patently not the case now, especially since we have Drum and Bass and of course as you mentioned.. even modern or synthwave now has more bass and kick.

Playing fast and loose here, The sountrack fits here and given the niche nature of the vid it probably fits better here than in the movies thread. Also it's great light relief

Here is the official song from it

Yeah, FM-84 is awesome. I listen to the album ''Atlas'' quite a lot.

This is probably my favorite synthwave mix. I discovered a lot of new artists with it, like Gunship, Traxx and VHS Glitch.

If you're looking for new synthwave artists, allow me to suggest Thunder Porpoise. Great sound with a little bit of melancholic tone to it, which can be pretty refreshing.

Pretty good mix of Gunship's Tech Noir by Carpentur Brut. All set to the hilariously gory Turbo Kid movie.

Saw that vid earlier in the thread. Good tune, but damn that vid. Apt it may be, but not for easy viewing.

I've touched on this subject before here, but it's a hit or miss imo. I've heard some songs that have really good instrumentals, but then the singing starts and it's pretty much ruined. But on the other hand a lot of my favorite songs in the genre have vocals in them. I haven't really updated my synthwave catalogue in a while so I'll just post these two artists again as examples of good vocal stuff:

The first of a series of videos that look into the history of synthwave, pretty interesting. Gelbar talks with a pretty thick accent though, so I'd advise you to turn on subtitles.
