Legless and/or armless GI's back from the war would walk, limp down the street. You'd find a hippy on every corner, awaiting their destiny as a bullet sponge or hood ornament. I'd rather have a Japanese car over a pure American steel, they just drink gas and handle like dogs. But given the choice give me a German car anyday (oh someone did! Me!.)
