MindCorrupt
Recently just moved to the UK from Aus and looking at buying a car over here. Original plan was to ship the rx7 across but I don't think the weather and road conditions would be kind to the old girl so it's gone into storage. Have been looking into BMW's which seem absurdly cheap around here compared to Aus, is there a catch here I'm not seeing? Not completely set on a BMW but they seem to be the way to go for bang for your buck for a solid RWD that's fun in the twisty bits. Been driving the gfs Yaris for 2 weeks and I'm about to pull my hair out. Any advice is appreciated cheers.
SouthLand
I don't know what or why but cars in the UK are very very cheap.
Carlover325
The cars may be cheaper, but it's more expensive to keep a vehicle on the road in the UK. The fuel costs, taxes, and insurance can be pretty high. Edited July 30, 2014 by Carlover325 epoxi and gtamann123

In the region where i live in my country, the prices are very high and the salaries are very low... Which makes everything f*cked up.
sivispacem
I've always been a firm believer in buying whatever you find with the longest tax in the sub-£750 market, but the way things are at the moment there are some absolutely silly bargains to be had. Find a well-cared for E36, ideally a 328i, and you'll be set if you really want RWD, but I'd personally look at stuff like Saab 9-5s and Volvo S60. Big turbocharged comfy saloons, reputation for being pretty hardy, 150mph performance and nice places to be. You should be able to get a 2.3 HPT 9-5 with about 220bhp, leather everything and working climate control for under £800. mr quick 1 AMD Ryzen 5900X (4.65GHz All-Core PBO2) | Gigabye X570S Pro | 32GB G-Skill Trident Z RGB 3600MHz CL16 EK-Quantum Reflection D5 | XSPC D5 PWM | TechN/Heatkiller Blocks | HardwareLabs GTS & GTX 360 Radiators Corsair AX750 | Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic XL | EVGA GeForce RTX2080 XC @2055MHz | Sabrant Rocket Plus 1TB Sabrant Rocket 2TB | Samsung 970 Evo 1TB | 2x ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q | Q Acoustics 2010i | Sabaj A4

There's too many foolish drivers in this damn country.

FranklinDeRoosevelt
Well you're obviously a lucky man and good driver. Plus it depends where you live. Try coming to Luton and insuring your car, especially in my post code. Too many thickhead asians crashing which has increased the premium for anyone trying to insure their vehicles, especially first time. What car do you have btw? MindCorrupt
Meh, it's only high if you're an idiot, a child or live in a bit of the country that's on fire. I pay about £250 a year. Started looking properly for a car today, found a really tidy 2001 BMW 318i 2.5 ... got quoted online at 3500 pounds for basic 3rd party (roughly 5 times the cost of the car). Are online quotes skewed or am I f*cked? Im 27 years old, just moved to the UK. Have held an Australian licence for 9 years but unfortunately a lot of them I just had compulsory 3rd party (included with registration) on my cars. Another option I suppose would be registering it with my girlfriend (10 years NCB) and having me as a named driver... edit - Its got to be f*cked or im putting something in completely wrong. Just looked up the insurance on a random Renault hatchback 1.2l - 850 pounds. Edited August 29, 2014 by MindCorrupt
sivispacem
Where are you located? Presumably you have no transferable no-claim bonus? You pay more off the bat for not having a UK/EU licence... The named driver trick used to work but these days is usually treated like insurance fraud, often because it is. Having her as a named driver on your policy might push it down. Zyo
Wow 3500 for insurance, that seems really steep for someone of a reasonable age with experience. I really guess noclaims bonuses make a difference these days. I don't really know any good insurance companies in the UK, but I might suggest trying for a company that offers a starting bonus, you sometimes get 20% for free for new customers. There are places too that do accelerated bonuses with 10 month policies. Also if you are insuring an interesting car, might be worth trying specialist insurers such as Adrian Flux for example. Also importantly, call the insurers rather than do it online and really shop around play one off against another with better offers. You should always get a better deal if you talk to them in person. Best of luck. epoxi
Yeah I think the problem is not having an EU license. I tried to insure a foreign relative on my Citroen C2 as a named driver on my policy and they quoted £30 per day! If you're staying in the UK permanently, I'd suggest getting a UK license. Daniel4
Also, I get better quotes for comprehensive insurance than 3rd party.
