Why did Lips 106 and Head Radio both play pop?

Yep, I feel like those muffled loops and reused songs were to give some world building, ya know, like telling us, "Hey! This is a GTA game with GTA music!". I really like how some of the GTA2 and 3 radio stations reuse songs from the previous games like the whole thing with "God Bless All The Universe" appearing as a background song on Lips.

Also this ^

I find it weird that the only rock-oriented song went to the "pop" station rather than going to the station that claims to play "rock n' roll" and rock. I guess the theme and pace of the song fit more with Lips 106 but it's still quite ironic.

Yeah that alternative rock track clearly debunks of the satiricalness of the radio personalites as previously emphasized among the thread.

Haha yeah, it was just like with the song "funk in time" from LCS version which is very inspired by the singles of RHCP, of the califonrication album that could've been more of a fit for LCS head radio.

In addition, you do bring up an excellent point regarding the GTA 3 airwaves being more than just the soundtrack itself with the addition

of the ambient music and reused indie music. I also would like to bring up the ambiguous advertised radio stations I.e. Liberty FM, in which thee housers deeply elaborated into such analogies like "not every door will be open" and "we only select the radio stations that we want the players to listen to" in old articles.

Yea I remember that article! On the topic of the nonexistent stations, I do think Liberty Soul FM was planned at one point. The reason I think this is because of a few reasons.

  • It is the only nonexistent station to get a full 128x128 pixel billboard.
  • Other billboards with nonexistent stations all had a fake radio frequency stamped on while Liberty Soul and the other real ones didn't.
  • The cut song "Wash Him Off" and even "Rubber Tip" could have easily fit on the station.

It feels as if it could have been planned before Lips 106, but instead realised the music they had didn't fit so they scrapped it and went for Top 40 Pop.

^ This allowed them to be more loose with the genre, meaning that if it they were leftovers from Head Radio like UniverseTwisters said, they wouldn't have to worry about the slight variety between each song.

Interesting. Yeah that's the only thing I wasn't fond of with the dynamic song list of the radio stations with GTA 2, in which they had recurring songs which I'm glad it wasn't the case to  large extent for grand theft auto 3 soundtrack.

R&B and Soul couldve been an interesting genre to be present in 3D era Liberty City, given the dystopian, dreary atmosphere of the game. I've been very curious still about the cut "metal and rock" station, in what sub genres it would've played. I get the sense that it would've played bands that are inspired by classic rock bands such as Stikki Fingaz instead of having parody of rap-rock acts.

Yea. I feel like having the same songs repeat with a time limit of 12 minutes per station took away from the songs possible playing time. Because of that, there's a good chance we'll never get to hear the full versions of those songs.

I get what you mean. This is how I look at it. Around the time of GTA3, Colin Anderson, the guy who produced most of the classic rock tracks for GTA had left the team. The only remaining producers were Craig Conner, Stuart Ross, and Allan Walker along with a few singers such as Paul Mackie who sung on the Stikki Fingerz tracks. Craig and Stuart produced a one or two rock tracks for the older games so I'd imagine it would be in the style and genre of those songs with Paul's rock-oriented vocals rather than Colin's classic rock inspired stuff. (Allan Walker didn't really start producing his own tracks until around the time of Vice City where he did a lot of the Love Fist stuff. It's possible if we would have got a rock station in GTA3, he may have contributed some of his classic rock inspired stuff instead.)

Craig Conner did "Let It Out" from GTA1 and "Feels Like I Just Can't Take No More" from GTA3. (Craig sung Let It Out, and Paul sung Feels Like I Just Can't Take No More)

Stuart Ross did "Dazed & Confused" from GTA2. (He got one of his friends named Innes Ricard to sing it and he describes as a glamrock style track)

Exactly, I actually commented about it on Colin's YT, and he obviously didn't give a very detailed response as he left before the production of GTA3 and said how heavy rock was not a priority as there weren't many 'heavy rock' fans working on the game ; so maybe he had an impact on the station to a larger degree with his departure

Regards to the Alternative Rock tracks yes, "Feels Like It just Can't take no more" is very similar to "Let It Out" and "My Tiny World" so it was inevitable to expect such similar sub genre for Grand Theft Auto 3.

Yeah the Glam Rock stuff to me would have the best fitting for Grand Theft Auto 3 in a weirdish way as the game somewhat gives off that retro-contemporary vibe with the emphasis of classic cars and the juxtaposition between classic and modern radio stations, just like in the previous 2 games (especially GTA 2).

Long Live Stikki Fingaz. Would've been badass to hear them on the set whilst driving the diablo stallion.

I've left a few comments on Colin's stuff about the sudden shift of music and I do believe him leaving was a big factor in that.

OH YEA! I somehow completely forgot about "My Tiny World" and "Do It On Your Own". Yea "My Tiny World" is quite similar to "Feels Like I Just Can't Take No More".

And about that glamrock stuff, yea. I've always loved the weird themes in the early GTA games and I think having a few glamrock tracks would have really built upon that.

It's unfortunate Stikki Fingerz didn't make a return in GTA3 but hey! They got 2 songs to their name, which is more than some GTA bands can say.

Colin was the main force behind the GTA bands until Love Fist came around.

Same goes with Aori!! (Well..technically) I just in general loved the in-house music with the first two games that felt like legitimate real hits; I'm also a big fan of The fix FM and future FM (dance music) on top of the hard Rock stations.

I love in-house music too! Yea I sometimes get confused with the Aori thing. Technically Aori is a song in GTA1 by the band "Ashtar" but for the "cut" progressive rock track, it was used as the band name.

Edit: Stylus Exodus got a second song as well!
