Was CJ a crack addict?

This thing bugs me from the 1.st time i`ve played SA. CJ is clearly anti-drugs during the gameplay but the following conversation between him and tennpeny in the begining cutscene goes like this;

T: So what else you got shakin` Carl?

CJ: Nothin`, i live in Liberty now, i`m clean, legit

T: Nah Carl, you aint never been clean

Now that dialogue bugs me, it looks like some indicating that CJ was a crackhead before he moved to Liberty city.

What do you guys think?

I think he was referencing his past crimes rather than a possible drug addict. As shown in the Introduction movie, C.J stole cars for Joey Leone, so he lied to Tenpenny when he said that he was clean at this point of the game, or maybe he did some important crime back in LS before living in the east coast.

I`ve never thought it this way. I think you are right. So him and Sweet are probably the only 2 from GSF who are not on drugs

Thanks for reply.

You know what's so ironic? How CJ is against drugs but during the beginning of the cutscene, Tenpenny takes CJ's money and says that it's drug money. Care to explain that?

Lol he was referring to committing crimes as far as "being clean", not smoking crack. Now Ryder on the other hand, I have personally known some crackheads in real life that have the similar personality type as him.

If anything Ryder was the only crackhead in this game (and Smoke towards the end).

Well he Tennpeny was a corrupt cop he just framed him like he framed him with a pendelburry`s murder. Tenpennye and pulaski needed some excuse for seizing money from CJ that`s why he said that it was drug money. Well it was probably the money from stolen cars back from LC but whatever.

Anyway as i recall Ryder wasn`t on crack (well maybe he was doing crack too) but on sherm (a cigarette filled with weed and dipped into PCP)

B-dup, big bear and that skinny bitch with a hat from GSF, they were all crackheads. Oh and Jizzy was a cokehead. Oh and Madddog was also reffered to doing coke, in one mission CJ said to him "how much blow can one guy snort" reffering blow as coke.

So there were plenty of them

Uh...Ryder wasn't a crackhead, because he never did crack. All he did was marijuana, which is one of the "weak drugs." And Big Bear was a crackhead.

In those days "Clean' was used more for Crime record reference.

As far as money, since at least as far back as the late sixties all twenty dollar bills were (considered by law enforcement) contaminated with coke (not the beverage).

So cops in the know (and generally small counties) could and did confiscate any large amount of money that *suspect* had in his/her possession as fruits of contraband. They might not have a case for use or distribution, but it was good enough (with some courts) to confiscate.

It would test as positive for drugs. The *suspect* would then have to go to court to prove that the money earned legally.

Maybe couple of joints here and there, but nothing more. I seriously doubt that CJ was taking any heavier drugs, if any at all.

It's Tenpenny, the guy was a corrupt cop, he was likely lying. Just so he could take that money from CJ.

Carl only makes reference to using weed ("Are you going to San Fierro...") In all other situations he makes it known he is against "hard drugs", and only tolerates Ryders use.

Which maybe another reason he offed him.

How was Ryder a crackhead when he never even did any crack? He was a STONER. There's a huge disparity.

It isn`t every drug that smokes crack. Ryder wasn`t on crack, he was reffered as a "shermhead", SHERM is a street slang which means a weed cigarette diped into a PCP. Don`t bother that weed and tobacco but PCP is f*cking dangerous drug. It is quite rare here in EU but it was popular during the 80s and mid-90s.

Altough it doesn`t f*ck you up as bad and as fast as crack does but it`s still heavy drug with hard impact on brain cells which was shown prety good in Ryder`s case lol

However i still haven`t found out yet what is that thing that Ryder cooks in the 1.st cutscene of "Catalyst" mission. When Tenpenny and Pulaski come in his house, he`s cooking some sh*t and Tenpenny says; "hmm my wife loves this stuff". I wonder what kind of stuff is that if anyone knows maybe?

What was it that Ryder was cooking on his stove? What were the Jars he was looking for in his yard?

I think Tennpeny references Carl's criminal life style, not drug addiction. Carl says he is not a criminal anymore in LC but the story trailer shows that Carl lies because he is still a back street thief in Liberty City.

He was looking for PCP.

CJ was not a crack addict, he is property addict. Each time the mission will show you one thing, property. So Tenpenny is provoking CJ's behaviour, about taking other's properties. So clean means CJ not taking others, but in case you know what I am saying. Just look at the earlier mission like robbing uncle from the warehouse / burglary, stealing millitary's weapons, taking other mansion and others.

Naw, Tenpenny was just saying that so he could take CJ's money. CJ probably got that cash from robberies and sh*t back in LC.

''I'm clean, legit'' meant he isn't doing criminal activities. He was trying to tell Tenpenny that he is not a gang banger and a criminal any more (though he lied about the criminal part, but he was just trying to get away). And the reason Tenpenny says ''It's drug money'' was simply him telling he has an excuse to take it, and could frame him if he wanted to.

CJ is definitely against drugs.

I guess CJ was a stoner because of the gameplay in beta he can smoke a joint but not crack. His only business in Liberty City is theft and robbery that's why he said he was clean...

Considering a known dirty cop picked him up...a known, criminal.  He simply said he was clean so as to diffuse the situation.  I don't think he was referring to a habit, I think he meant work wise.

Clean in the context used by Carl, is meaning "No Crime" has nothing to with drugs as a user.

Besides Carl admitted to Truth (spoiler) that he only used Mary-Jane.
