we've decided on getting a new "family / daily car" soon, and i've compiled a short list of cars that meet our requirements and price range. but after some cars on that list not being all that good, and my mom not liking a few of them, we've gotten down to three cars: Golf MK6, in my opinion the prettiest Golf, great car, prices only going down. 4th gen Renault Clio, mom loves the way it looks, good petrol engine and it would make a very nice daily driver. and the third is the Opel Astra J. it looks pretty good, at least the hatch version and they've got good diesel engines. my vote goes towards the golf, as it's honestly the best car on the list, but the Clio looks reeeeeeeeaaaally good, and I am very biased towards frenchies. no real opinion on the Astra as it's just an OK car.

truly a clash of titans

Golf's are fantastic cars, especially the diesel ones. The Renault is pretty, but looks aren't everything!

The Golf would be my choice out of those three.

I feel sad today because I think back on the times that I thought it would be so sick to own one of my favorite cars, a P71 Crown Victoria, but I regret making the move and selling my old SUV. It had a lot of faults and wasn’t perfect but I miss the 4WD and the ground clearance and the space. Perhaps it’s time to end the experiment and head back to what I had before. Maybe it’s just the wrong time.

I don't know about that. We put about 65,000-85,000km per year on our S-Class and 7 Series (W220/W221/F02/W222) and no major problems have occured. Truthfully the F02 7er wasn't great so we replaced that with the W222 S500, which has been stellar so far. Keep in mind the roads over here probably aren't even half as nice as in the US so we're talking rough roads and potholes. I also daily a G500 which now has 150,000km on the odometer and that has literally never let me down, and I bash on that car by going off-road every other weekend. I've knocked bits off of it and beached it a couple times on a 40° incline with a massive 90° step at the top, and I also take it through moving water a metre deep semi-regularly, but no mechanical issues so far either. I do tend to service my vehicles more regularly than most people though so that may be why they've largely been trouble free. I also took delivery of a Range Rover Vogue brand new last year and I've put 30,000km on already in my first full year of ownership and it has been absolutely wonderful. I have had my Range Rover serviced 4 times already in 2020 but thats just because I rack up the miles faster than average and I like to stick to my own maintenance plan, not the manufacturers.

So I beg to differ that "trying to reach one third of those miles in six months in any mercedes benz from 2015 on. The engine would seize, even if taken care of like a baby these cars are just name and no dependability whatsoever."

Oh, and it's not like I've not had experience with Toyotas. I also have an FJ Cruiser and Alphard, also had several generations of the Lexus LS up to the LS460L, and I'd say generally speaking Toyotas are just crap to be in compared to their German brethren.

I used to have a  2010 F02 750LI and it was the biggest problem-car ive ever had. The N63 motor is so garbage. I ran into Misfiring/transmission malfunction issues, changed the spark plugs, coil packs, injectors, walnut blast, mechatronics, and it still misfired after fixing all that. Cost me around 8k to do that and at that point I gave up and traded it for a 2010 W221 S550, which was an awesome car no issues other than  1 air shock i had to change, ive sinced traded that in for a 2019 W222 S560 and its great aswell. But Im never going back to any kind of BMW

Also had a E92 335XI (n54) and it gave me the same issues as my 750 lol

What a coincidence, I saw a F02 750Li on a tow truck just yesterday going home from work.

I dunno, BMW completely lost it with these latest models, at least when it comes to exterior design. It's not only the grilles that are problematic, they removed almost everything that makes a BMW a BMW. The other morning I saw an F44 in person for the first time and I was just shocked. The rear looks like an X6 (which is also revolting), the sides - door shape, door handles and the lines in general look like a CLA and the front is just FROGE. For some reason, their new cars do look much like new Benzes in certain areas. Why.

The 4 series coupe, when looked at from sides looks just like a generic coupe and it could be anything for all you know until you see the emblem (which they also f*cked up, the new one, with modern oversimplification and excessive minimalism I despise with all of my being).

I was a kid when the E39s were new and that was the car that made me fall in love with BMW and cars in general. I consider late '90s and early '00s Bimmers to be the most beautiful models and the peak of BMW. Back then they were a synonym for 'badassery' and sexy cars. I, as many others do, do not view them as such these days. The only desirable modern BMW to me is the G20. I don't know if it's a good car in terms of reliability, but by some miracle it retained that sexy sedan image the 3 series stand for. Still, I wish the kidneys were smaller and not so stretched out to fill the space between the headlights. I'm not too fond of the diffuser either, especially when it's black and not matching the body color.

Interesting- I'm pretty set on replacing my M140i with a G20 M340i now that 18-month-old cars have dipped down to the £35k mark.

Not been able to schedule a test drive or anything thanks to Covid, but hopefully that should be rectified in the next few weeks.

Sweet, good luck with it and inform us of your impressions after the drive. Makes sense to upgrade from 1er.

Not sure why is that interesting though? It's a pretty premium sedan. Or is it not a popular opinion?

Interesting that someone else actually likes them- I haven't found that many people that actually have many nice things to say about the G20 from an aesthetic perspective.

I browsed reddit a bit and it seems true that most people don't like it. I had no idea that was the case.

From what I could gather, it's mostly complaints about the grille size (which isn't as bad as other models imo but I agree), the Lexus tail lights (which I personally love and prefer over F30's) and the overall design being a bit bland I guess. I do think the G20's sides suffer from the same blandness and lack of strong lines as the 4 series, yet somehow the more I look at it, the more it grows on me. I suppose it has much to do with G20 having 4 doors so it neutralizes the 'emptiness' and gives it that clean look.

OveralI consider G20 to be an evolution in right direction from F30 (minus the you-know-what). Another detail I appreciate very much about the G20 is that they brought the classic side mirror shape from E38/E39 era.

The 5 series G30 looks good too, the kidney size is actually the most proportional with the rest of the car compared to the rest of the lineup, but the car itself seems a bit too stretched out length wise. I understand it had to grew as every other model but it ruined the proportions and that figure it's got going on. Also the tail light shape doesn't work for me and I wish they were more like G20's.

It's mostly the normal criticisms you get levelled against pretty much any modern car.

"It's too big" (yes, it's the size of an E39 5 series, but newsflash- cars have been getting bigger)

"The kidney grille is too big" (which I don't think is unfair, but I certainly prefer it to the enormous basking shark grilles you get on Audis and Lexus, or on the M3/4)

"The interior is boring" (in black with the piano black trim yeah, it's pretty dreary. Thankfully there are plenty of other leather and trim options, it's brilliantly well made, and BMW seem to be about the only marque actually integrating their displays into the dash rather than just bolting iPads onto everything.)

"It's fussy" (again horses for courses, I think they're pretty cohesively styled)

"Take the badge off and it could be anything" (lol no)

Then there's all the usual complaints from the sort who wear hair shirts and want a return to the 70s- turbo only, no manual, too heavy, not enough steering feel, too much tech, too complex.

Personally I can't think of a much better all weather daily driver. There was a BMW Individual Speed Yellow one with the full M Performance kit up for sale recently, which was rather tasty.

Damn that's sexy, only problem with this color is you don't need night goggles to see it in the dead of night. 😆 It looks attractive, but my favorite would be Portimao Blue or Alpine White. Black Sapphire or Mineral Gray are nice too, but that's easily changeable with wraps if you ever get bored of it.

I forgot they offered manual solely for 318d and 320d models which is also a big minus from me. Call me caveman all you want, M/T is a must for me. Luckily I don't nearly have enough to even consider buying one so I don't have to worry about that at least. An M/T 320i xDrive would be sweet though.

Alpine White

I like the Alpine, and the G20 looks good in it, but my 140i is Alpine and I don't like buying consecutive cars in the same colour.

Portimao (and the other blue I can't remember the name of) are lovely colours but they're hard to pick a complementing interior colour with, especially given that my wife point-blank refuses to let me buy a car with light leather (and is even hesitant about biscuity brown/mocha type colours). And I hate black interiors.

Portimao Blue w/ Vernasca Cognac. As for the other issue:

kill wife

life good.

Seriously though, Cognac seems like a reasonable compromise, especially in this situation. If I were to choose, it would definitely be my first choice. That type of leather color just mesmerizes me. Canberra is too light and Mocha is too dark, so Cognac feels just right in my opinion. If missus allows it, that is.

Reddit, review sites, youtube comment sections - doesn't matter, the same pattern emerges. It's mainly the points I mentioned plus what sivispacem said in the post right below mine.

Don't know much about that, I don't hang out around reddit much because I don't like its layout and overall design. Reading stuff on it tires me and I find it to be too messy, so I avoid it most of the time.

The Cognac is definitely a great colour combined with the blue, but you only get it in the Vernasca leather which is fine, but the Merino is MUCH nicer.

That limits you to black, red or oyster for the UK market now. They used to do a blue/black combination that was...interesting. But I'd want to see it in the flesh really.

Alpine and Fiona Red would be a good combination, but that's basically exactly what I've got in my 140i (Alpine/Coral). Maybe I'll get lucky and find something in individual spec. Or black would probably be fine with a contrasting trim  like aluminium hexagon.

-E

Apparently you can't combine Merino with the M Performance seats. That's a bummer. They've also removed the ability to add steering wheel heating outside of the Comfort Pack. But you can now option a carbon roof lol. A quick play with the configurator gave me:

> Portimao Blue

> M Performance seats in Cognac

> M Technology pack

> M Carbon pack

> Tech pack

That would cover off everything I would think mandatory plus some fancy bits I don't need but like the idea of.

That, plus a nice set of wheels and that's about it. 👌

Not sure if that's included in the M Carbon pack, but I'd tick off those ugly M Performance side skirt attachments in black, they make the car look so cheap. They remind me of previous gen base model Peugeots with those fugly black plastics running along the doors.

Also, is there a factory option for two exhaust pipes on each side because I haven't seen it anywhere? If not, I'd consider going aftermarket unless it voids the warranty. One pipe on each side looks frivolous on such an aggressive looking car to say the least.

@sivispacem How's the Goodyear Asymmetric 5's? I bought an F32 for daily use about half a year ago and need new tyres. It's currently just running the standard Bridgestone S001 runflats which feel way too crashy and harsh on hard bumps, even with the adaptive m suspension. Debating if I should go for the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 or Goodyear Asymmetric 5. They're exactly the same price over here, but for the Goodyear's I'll have to go 245/35/19 front rather than the BMW stock 225/40/19 as they don't have the 225/40/19 available for the Australian market.

Can't fault them so far. They're probably 95% as good as the MPSS in the dry and about 200% as good in the wet. Very progressive in how they break traction, I find them a lot more predictable than the Supersports; in S+ they give just enough slip to allow for a second of two of sideways action whereas the SS felt very snappy when they let go. Sharper on the turn-in too.

I would say they're a little firmer due to the stiffer sidewall but not much in it.

The PS4 is about 20% more expensive here and I don't think they'd be worth it. But if they're parity in price, they'd probably edge the Goodyear overall. They do have the characteristic soft Michelin sidewall so a bit less sharp but better dry weather grip.

All credit to Peugeot for their committment to doing something a bit different on the styling front, but that back end is awful. Plastic fake exhaust trims precisely zero cohesion and what is going on with that swage line in the bootlid? Looks like it's been backed into an Armco barrier.

The basic shape is weirdly similar to the 5 door F20 1-Series except with a slightly shorter snout, which is a nice change from most current hatchbacks which look like shrunken SUVs.

The interior looks surprisingly good but I suspect that's the pictures flattering a sea of shiny plastic.

Never fancied their cars, but hands down Peugeot is killing it nowadays with the new design language. But they always have to f*ck something up, it's mandatory. 308's rearside is ugly and a step backwards though, compared to the current model. The front bumper does seem a bit cut off as Pavle said, seems like a bit too much ground clearance there.

As for the DS, the interior looks okay overall, but what's with that saber tooth light shape on the front? And that stripe of chrome starting below the sensor and ending at the license plate, what's its point? It doesn't follow anything, it's just there. Also that chrome on the side is unnecessary, they just can't leave that behind. Still a massive improvement over previous gen DS models bombarded with sh*tton of chrome and whole bunch of messy, inconsistent exterior lines.

Overall, that DS4 is a very attractive looking car and a change for the better. The French are stepping their game up while the Benz and BMW are sleeping. 😛

Took my car to the mechanic. Turns out the jackass who broke my mounting bracket that took me six months to reaquire also lost the spacers for it, so now they have to look for those. He also bought the wrong alternator and charged me 80 dollars for it, so the mechanic has to get a new one of those too.

EDIT: They cant get the spacers so they cant fix the car, I'm SOL
