Svip nailed it. I had a hearty laugh reading that.

What do you guys think of the new Lexus GS F?

Not really a fan of the huge grilles they've been putting on their cars. They only seem to get bigger with each model..

I like it. 'Course there is no big and powerful four door that I don't like to be honest.

No I'm not phased by the polarizing grill or lights. Yeah it's unusual but it's also original. All people say when they see these things is how ugly that grill is and how horrible the car is. And yet they sell like hot cakes. Due to regulations, automakers don't really have much of a choice these days. It's either be original or make something that looks just like everything else. Lexus chose the former and I'm glad they did. These cars look so good in the flesh. All of those unusual lines, they just don't work in photos, only in real life.

I like it. I like the RCF. I don't care how weird the grill is. There's more to the car than the grill.

I've grown used to the "spindle grill" and appreciate it in largely the way Scaglietti describes, it dares to be different. I really love the GS F's headlight design however.

Another great point made, is that they really look superb in person. I was on the fence about the RC F in photos, but it looks excellent in real life. I've noticed this with other cars too, most recently with the Cadillac CT6. I haven't experienced the GS F in the flesh though, but I'm really glad to see Lexus putting their resources into the F line and taking it more seriously. It's huge for their perception wars against the Germans.

My only concern with the GS F, specifically, is that there doesn't seem to be a compelling reason to buy one over it's competition.

And my thing is, they definitely stand out. Of course I have a very trained eye when it comes to identifying cars on the road but back in October we were heading to the grocery store and I was minding my own business. Glanced out the window to the right and saw the grill of an Ultrasonic Blue Mica RCF and I had to do a double take! It had the full LED lights which are by far the most unique I've seen on any car below $80K. Owner was a speed demon to, you could tell. As soon as the traffic cleared he floored it.

Lexus has always been a bit meh for me, a fancy Toyota. Like most Jap stuff it just seems a bit bland and characterless.

Well in my opinion, character is a bit of a stretch. It certainly has character. Doesn't mean it looks good or that you have to like it but if you're going to tell me that all of those sharp lines are characterless than that's a bit unfair. It's no more characterless, to me, than your typical Audi which you call also call a "fancy" Volkswagen...

Of course the grille isn't everything.. but it's definitely a major part when it comes to design. The look, the curves, the edges. It all matters if you like sleek cars. The grille is just a turn off to me. The rest of it looks beautiful, especially in that orange color.

And by the way, it sounds sexcellent.

Yeah I see where you're coming from. I do love the rest of the car. Always loved the GS, nice as hell. And it does sound sexcellent. :D It's a bit of a dinosaur and still uses a big naturally aspirated V8.

And from what I've read, it reminds reviewers of the more old school sports sedans like the E34 M5. So it might not be a real M5 competitor but at least it's a driver's car.

I don't personally like 7 series because of this:

The biggest issue I've had with recent Lexus is the fact they look like cheese-graters. I don't even mind the strange squinty lights, but that front grille basically looks like it's been specifically designed to prep Comté for a foundue.

It wasn't so much on the looks as the cars in general. Jap cars always seem like an old white computer. Technologically amazing, but somehow the Europeans and Americans just get so much more character into them.

Yeah, drive an FN2 Civic Type R and a Mk5 Golf GTI back to back and tell me which is more characterful. Clue, it's the Civic by a country mile.

Because for some strange reason, he also cares about cars that are not classic Citroëns. I know it's weird, but apparently there are cars without hydropneumatic suspension.

Yea because an R35 doesn't have "character"

If by character you mean lack of reliability then you would be completely right.

There's this thing called a gearbox. It's main role is to keep the engine in the powerband. The one on the FN2 is lovely to use too, much better than the bix on the GTI or Cupra which is somewhat akin to stirring turds with a rubber mallet.

I would suggest you've been "spoiled" by diesel aping four pot turbos, one of which I currently drive, but as something that's actually fun give me the 9,000 RMP redline and the wonderfully balanced chassis over the wave of torque and inert lifelessness. Then again, I actually enjoy driving cars rather than just being propelled by them.

Looks great as always but... it has 600hp and 590lbft of torque so does the Alpina B7... which is quicker. I'm confused.

I think the criticisms of Japanese cars are really unfounded and do a disservice to the many interesting. luxurious and high performance cars that have come from that nation today and over decades and decades. It seems really short-sighted.

From the article The BMW M760i xDrive isn't as cool as the Alpina B7:

"Mechanically, and as far as we can tell, the only real difference between the two cars is under the hood. The M760i uses a twin-turbo 6.6-liter V12 capable of an estimated 600 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 590 pound-feet of torque at 1,500 rpm. Thing is, the Alpina B7 also makes 600 hp and 590 lb-ft, albeit at higher points in the rev range, from a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8. Both cars use all-wheel drive. Both cars have eight-speed automatic transmissions. But while the M760i does the 0-62 run in 3.9 seconds and tops out at an electronically limited 155 miles per hour, the Alpina does 0-60 in 3.6 seconds and runs to an unrestricted 193 mph."

In my opinion, the B7 looks much more aggressive and seems to have much more visual presence than the M760i. The M760i seems to be designed for the business exec who wants a V12 and bragging rights but doesn't actually give a crap about performance in reality. The client in this case would probably still be driven around. I think the B7 is for the diehard enthusiast who does appreciate the spirited performance and probably would drive the B7 themselves.

You have to care enough to seek out the Alpina B7. It's not as easy as the M760i buyer who could just stroll into any random BMW dealership, request a 7-Series and say "I want the one with the V12".

Makes since. Although, I think Mercedes has the right idea with their S65 AMG V12. It's a couple of tenths of a second slower to 60 - who cares - but there are a lot of reasons to choose one over an S63. Torque. That's a big one. RWD. That's another. And of course it looks a lot better and comes with unique colors.

The waiting times for an alpina are ridiculous too.

I doubt it's worse than going through Designo or Audi Exclusive to order your car only to be put on a long waiting list.
