Can't get a wrx.

I don't know what car to get now.

My parents want me to get something older and cheaper. They're paying the car note and they'll pay insurance too if it's not too expensive.

Do you guys have any suggestions? I've been so caught up in which cars were faster I have no clue what "regular" cars would satisfy me..

Would buying a used Crown Victoria be worth it if it's sold for around $5,000 (or less)? Are they also reliable? I love CV's, because they just look awesome for the time they were made, and also because they're powerful. I don't want to get a car in two years or so to only have it break down the first year.

Based on everything I've seen you posted so far and where you live (in which I have no clue)

If America: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/cto/4923584568.html

If Europe: http://london.craigslist.co.uk/ctd/4906680238.html

If Australia: http://sydney.craigslist.com.au/cto/4917581264.html

I'd rather learn right from wrong in these than the cars you want.

That's really far , I live in Virginia.

It seems like a nice beginner car though.

Now for a second car , after I've had some more experience, would it be safe for me to jump to something like a c7 corvette ( not saying I can afford one just hypothetical)

Spent the past weekend doing all sorts of auto-related activities. Started out going to a local C&C. Some cool things there. A new Alfa 4c and a C7 Z06 with the Z07 package.

YH2UU8l.jpg

3W99RIi.jpg

Also, my friend's Euro 850i. (6 speed with Sport interior)

sKLQLb2.jpg

And an E28 M5 my friend has been restoring at his shop. These things are starting to get pricey now.

After that, I went and hung out at the local Test n Tune autocross. Cool stuff there. Friend had his Series 1 Elise out there. These things are super rare here. Got to ride in it and have to say it was a blast. 160 whp, 1600 lbs, Quantum coilovers, and Toyo R1R's. Seriously quick on this course.

Also got to ride in a very well-prepped newer Shelby GT500. 600 hp, 335 Hoosiers all around and KW V3's. It was almost comical seeing something so massive pulling 1.5G's. It would absolutely beat you up riding around in that with no harness.

Next day was an actual points event. Some cool stuff showed up. BSP S2k on DA Koni Yellows, CCW's, 295/315 hoosiers. Etc.

Also one of the fastest Miatas in the country. 2 way AST's, 15x11 Bogarts with 275 Hoosiers. Built to sh*t BP with a whipple charger on C16. Something like 400+ whp. Had traction control programmed into the megasquirt to put it all down.

I ended up driving my friend's 2.5RS Imprezza.

Fun little car. First car I've ever raced with power steering, much less AWD. A bit different from the miatas I'm used to driving. Very soft (03 STI stock struts with a bugeye WRX 20 mm rear sway). I'll be driving a gutted sub-1900 lbs 1.6 Miata in 2 weeks and hopefully back in the turbo Miata in April. Have a friend building a BP4W for it and hoping to make 220-230 whp on 12 psi with it.

Little question for you stick shifters: when on a hill, you're waiting for the signal to turn green. Do you shift into neutral, and pull the handbrake; or do you shift into first, and balance the car with the clutch and accelerator?

People in Brazil often does the second option, and I prefer doing the first (easier + easier on the clutch). What do you prefer?

@Majestic: Only if you're The Stig's Son you'd prolly live after getting a Corvette as a second car. Or even a WRX as a first, even though it's safe to drive. I'd go with a small hatchback, because you will crash it, you will hit a wall, hit a curb. You'll need something cheap to buy/maintain/repair as a first car. Hell, I'd even buy something you can repair yourself, so you can learn a thing or two about the inner guts of you car. As a second car, prolly something bigger, but not THAT bigger (I went from a Citröen C3 to a Mk7.5 Ford Fiesta).

Living in Virginia, I think something like this would be good. I know it's not that small, nor that slow, but it was the first car I've ever worked on. My cousin has one, and most stuff I know about the guts of a car was from we tampering with his Focus. It's a good car overall, too.

The former of course. Also uses less fuel and looks less stupid.

Yep, the former. I only do the latter momentarily before pulling away, orvwhen climbing a hill in traffic- and even then, the moment I'm stationary, handbrake on.

I will sometimes (particularly in slow moving but seldom stationary traffic) stay in first with the clutch depressed and handbrake on, but that doesn't really put any stress on anything so its fine.

I usually put it in neutral and stand on the brake, makes it less hassle when taking off again. Not really something that happens a lot, traffic lights are a rarity here.

I hate people riding the brake in queuing traffic. Why dazzle the person behind you with brake lights for minutes at a time?

What are you supposed to do? If you don't ride the brake, wouldn't the car cruise?

People over here will just run into you if they don't see the lights.

Very bright red lights are American for "STOP THE CAR, YOU STUPID BASTARD!!!"

Why spend the handbrake? I use the brake to indicate when I am interested in beginning moving again. This is useful when others start lifting their brake lights, so I know when to start getting back into first.

Same over here. From practice driving in São Paulo, it's better to just slighty leave you foot on the brakes (enough pressure to light it up) for a second or too before starting to stop the car. Otherwise, you're gonna have a smashed boot.

So I managed to spin my car while executing a U-Turn last night. Who thought it was a good idea to turn on sport mode and turn off traction control in rainy conditions? Me, it was me that thought it was a good idea.

I will probably upload that part of the dashcam video at some point.

I never use mine ever (because it doesn't work). And I only use it to park when I'm driving something where it does work. I think it's a pretty bad habit to rely on when you end up driving something with a broken one.

If anyone wants to throw me some suggestions....

I want to get a car, preferably a coupe built by japanese companies Have no clue what car to get.

What kind of car should I look for?

This is gonna be my daily, but I also want a car that doesn't feel like your everyday commuter car. I'm mostly gonna lower it , get a muffler and intake and then mess with the engine once I learn more from my friend.

Some of my other friends have like a is300, integra, e30, "slamry", older mustang, civic hatch (4D I think) , and Scion tC so I'm really hoping I can find something along those lines.

I'm 19 years old.

Parents are paying car note. Parents will also pay insurance if insurance is less than $95 for them.

I'm thinking maybe I can cut them a deal and pay for half the insurance and some of the car note but idk.

To make my search even more tough they want to find a car that has:

Mileage below 90,000

Price under $10,000

And whenever I think I've found a car my mom will ask "what's wrong with it"?

The ideal price range and mileage For them would be like $5,000 and 60,000 mileage. ( and im kinda sure cars like that usually have something wrong with it lol)

I'll do the legwork myself when I actually looking for the car I just want more suggestions to expand my options

I learned long ago not to trust peoples lights when in traffic. There's an entire industry built around crash-for-cash scamming in the UK where people wire their brake lights to switches, disconnect them completely or wire them up incorrectly and basically provoke people into rear-ending them so they can sue for imaginary whiplash.

What cars are there that uses a TwinTurbo V12?

Merc S/SL/CL 600 and 65 AMG series, Pagani Huayra, BMW 760Li, Audi Q7 6.0 TDI, Maybach 57 and 62...

Yes, the CL600, SL600 and S600 are all early 00's. Not aware of any mainstream twin turbo V12 engines in production cars before then.

Out of wondering, does it really matter what brand of gas you put into your car? I usually fill up at a Texaco station near where I live before work, but lately I've been filling up at a Sunoco near where I work.

Also, if anyone's in Central Florida and wants to see a sh*tton of Harleys, come to Daytona, seeing as Bike Week is going on. They're a f*cking pain in the ass to drive in, though. I was parked at a red light and this hogrider was parked next to me. He then gets this idea to wheel his Harley in front of my truck and if that's not enough, he starts going 20 in the 40 mph zone. These bikers man, they're getting to be a real pain in the ass the more I drive around in them. And don't get me started on people who own crotch rockets.

What's wrong with the people who own crotch rockets?

Don't get me started on the increasing number of people who drive EDM-standard Honda Civic Type R EP3's and think they're "hot jdm sh*t". Your toned-down, LSD-absent (amongst a range of other things) model was built in Swindon by blokes and only then shipped off to Japan to become their domestic-market spec.

I mean, it's a cracking example of a Hot hatch that rightfully deserved it's Hot Hatch of the year 2007 from Top Gear, but it's availability and prices now allows a wide variety of people to seep into it's ownership- most of the time creating great examples, but Driftland had a few which had one too many stickers and exaggerated tow hooks to their names. Oh and the S-type Type R replicas can get pretty ropey around here too. /personal opinion

I think country of manufacture does not matter for the most part. The most important factors are the product's design, how the manufacturing operation is managed and the quality controls that are in place. For instance, virtually all our consumer products come from China, some of it is the highest quality ever produced, some of it is absolute garbage, but it's all technically Chinese.

Typically the Japanese have a meticulous attention to detail, but that's not to say they can't implement that ethos elsewhere.
