There's a Polish plated 306 down the road from me on which the entire off-side wing, including headlight and indicator mounting brackets, is entirely and solely composed of parcel tape. Not even proper gaffer tape, but brown parcel tape. And copious quantities of epoxy.

The logical reasoning is that when something goes wrong in one of those top-tier Bavarian-mobiles you get two options: pay a LOT of money, even for rather simple fixes

Maybe if you're stupid enough to buy brand new OEM parts. Granted, there are some circumstances where you have no other option, but in the vast majority of cases you can buy either off-brand or second hand and save a sh*tload of money. Take, for example, a hose for my automatic transmission fluid that I currently need to replace - brand new OEM replacement is $300 (for a f*cking hose), off-brand is $50, if I manage to find a suitable replacement at Pull-a-Part it's no more than $5 (that's doubtful, though - I wouldn't try to salvage a hose from a junkyard unless it was an emergency or the hose was in shockingly good condition), and my father thinks he might even be able to improvise a replacement with hosing available to him at his work's machine shop for the low price of absolutely nothing. And I think my car can be considered a "top-tier Bavarian," considering it's one of the rarest E23s in existence.

Anyone can maintain a BMW, you just have to be smart about it. Keep in mind, this is in the south of the US as well - Lurch and I don't exactly have a plethora of parts available to us, unlike someone in Poland where BMWs are undoubtedly a hell of a lot more common.

Hello.

Up for sale is a respected BMW 728i in beautiful blue colour. Car was never infected by LPG, or pseudo mechanics. Engine, suspension and brakes are all in good condition, no rust on the body, original 14 inch alloys with an identical spare wheel. On top of that a set of 14 inch steel wheels will be included. Interior's original along with BMW Bavaria radio. No marks on the seats. Electric Mirrors. Technical condition is very good. It's missing a foglight on the photo, but it's been fixed. I don't think there's any need to talk about the comfort or value of the original 7er. It's a car with a soul. Inspection done recently. The car will drive anywhere on its own. For more info call me on....

Man, the more I see other E23 interiors, the more I realize how lucky I am to have an L7. The difference in interior quality is just staggering.

That one's hella more expensive, but it's in such a mint condition!!

If you're trying to own a BMW on the cheap, never go top tier (M-whatever or V12 model 7's). I always like the highest non-M models. I can always find 535i's at the junkyard or 325's or 328's. Even 735's and 740's. Pat's lucky in that the rarity of his car is just an interior package (which interior parts for it are insanely expensive). Everything mechanical is normal 735i.

It's also always nice to have a car who's drivetrain is shared with other cars in the range (like an M30/g260 in a lot of 80's-early 90's cars). Most parts will interchange and some will even be upgrade parts for certain models.

I actually see 750's (E32's and E38's) come into the junkyard from time to time. I still wouldn't want to own one unless I had money to throw around.

Also, Pat, that was a euro 728. A model low-tier enough that we didn't get. US 733 and 735 have very high quality wood interiors as standard. Your leather everything probably stands the test of time better though, just from what I've seen. Leather seats are also standard here.

There's still a ridiculously huge shift in quality between your average E23's interior and the L7's interior, though. I've been in several regular E23s at Pull-a-Part, and while a junkyard car is by no means a good indicator of interior quality, I could tell right away that I made the right choice when I bought my car instead of trying to find a different E23 in better shape.

Went to the mall yesterday and saw this f*cktard. First thoughts were "oh no, the douchebag epidemic is spreading!"

Take a gander.

Do that here with a nice car and you'll come out finding key marks all over it.

Pricks do this to avoid having doors slammed up into their precious rides. I reckon they get more dents and key marks in their cars as a result of this sort of parking, though.

I can understand how you can get paranoid about someone dooring your car, but parking like that is just asking for someone to vandalize it, lol.

That is a pretty atrocious parking job there. After work I'm gonna go out and snap some pics of how people park here in China. I guarantee most of you will be like WTF.

For someone who has been hit four times like dents, dings, scuffs and the like by other careless drivers here in Houston in just the past few months, I would almost consider actually doing this, but I agree that's just asking for it to be vandalized.

..Instead I now park far far away from anything so that no one would even attempt to park right next to me because it is too far. If I can't, I usually try to park right next to an end spot and park closest to the curb. I swear it's like a life or death situation for me now whenever I park my car. confused.gif

This has never happened to me *touch wood*

Possibly because most cars on the road in China are the first car that they've owned so people really take care when opening their doors.

Today I realised that I pretty much hate driving the KIAs work keep putting me in. I'm thinking that when the time comes for my Cee'd wagon to be replaced I'll just not take out a new car. Figure I'll just buy something that's a bit more my style.

Still considering a W124 300CE though... They go around for similar money.

Great cars, let me know if there is anything you want to ask about them.

If I was going to do anything different, I would probably try to pick up a later one with a 24v I6 (220hp instead of 190) or one of the e320 engines from after '94 (maybe not worth worrying about if insurance is an issue, also consider a 230?). From about 92-94 they had sketchy biodegradable wiring harnesses that are guaranteed to go haywire and cause problems. Besides that, there is not much that goes wrong. Make sure it shifts smooth and double check the mileage if you can as the mileometers can stop working or work intermittently.

Mine has been good to me, and is pretty cheap to run. less than 100 euros a month for all expenses except fuel. That includes servicing (at specialist), insurance, tax and all repairs it has needed. It recently passed its bi-annual inspection with zero faults too. Not bad for nearly 23 years old.

Thanks man!

Yeah I love the E-class and S-Class coupes from the 80s up to the mid 90s. I would love a w126 SEC too, but finding a good one that doesn't have a silly price tag is difficult. We have a w126 Sedan in the family as well, so I am pretty familiar with the S-class. The 560 is just about as great as 1980s benzes get, it's on my wish list.

Beautiful cars. Could you get one of those with a 5 speed (like you could with R129 SL 300's)?

You could, but from what I understand they are super rare. And I think maybe not as reliable.

I like the R129 as well. Awesome cabriolet. And about the same price as the E-class Cab. but the R129 comes with a hard-top.

Thats one place I swear I'll go.

The stories I've heard, videos I saw and artiles I read on it makes it a must see for me.

One day.

Have ae86's gone extinct? I haven't been to a junk yard in a while but on craigslist and even ebay they are very very hard to find...

it's a shame such a cool car is disapearing.

EDIT: Nice BMW by the way.

Not only is that the ugliest Porsche ever made, but they also got it in the worst color possible. It looks like a turd with wheels.

And as for the parking job, if I didn't care about my own vehicle getting damaged, I would love to park by squeezing between the Porsche and the pillar to the right. Make getting out of the parking spot a challenge for them.

I've been seriously wondering whether I would order the XFR-S with or without that wing. I hate wings but this seems like the car's party piece, almost a shame to lose it. I reserve judgement 'till I behold it in the metal (or carbon).

I've been waiting for this car ever since the XKR-S was announced. The colour divides opinion (as in, 99% hate it; guess I'm a one-percent-er) and I'd like a blue velvet lining for the glovebox & cubby-hole to be an option, wishfully.

Cue all the "JAGWAR SUXZ EMM FIVE IS BETTER LOL WTF" comments. I'll answer those right here: If I wanted to hear badly faked engine sounds through loudspeakers, I'd play Gran Turismo.

I have to chuckle at that disclaimer.
