I like how in the first video he has a duplicate light bar to confirm what is being displayed on the rear of the car. Impressive circuitry.

Oh sh*t! Watching the edge come closer and knowing there's nothing you can do to avoid going off. Scary stuff.

The way it flies through the air means the hill is a lot steeper than it looks. cry.gif

I am glad the rollcage did its job and they are both healthy now.

Watching something like that really is testament to just how strong the crash cells/rollcages in racing cars are these days. By my rudimentary calculation, that Evo travels a good 30+m from the road edge to impact, and I can't even begin to count the number of times it rolls.

So my dad bought a 1996 E36 323i saloon

What a lovely car. Here's a picture next to his bike

Very nice car, quicker than I expected too. Needs orange indicators and Style 32s. Matter of fact it needs to be the saloon version of this

Odd that, most of us over here in the states want to have clear corners, side markers and tail lights, well at least I know I want to, while you Europeans want ambers. tounge.gif

And vice versa for the Ford Focus.

For me colourless lenses would always win, but it's just a matter of opinion (though funnily enough actually like urine-yellow fog-light lenses on certain cars). I think the primary things that make the shown 'ideal' coupé version such an aspiration are the wheels, sideskirts and suspension stance.

My opinion on clear/amber indicators depends entirely on the car and the car colour. If the E36 was an Estoril Blue M3 I'd have to say clear or even smoked indicators, but on the black, orange.

@epoxi; yeah, it's a real nicely done example. The problem is with 'normal' E36s, at least here, is that a lot of people put the M Sport kit on them, I don't see the point personally. It's not an M3, never will be, and I don't like doing what everybody else is doing anyway

I've always preferred amber indicators on anything but Estoril or some type of grey or silver. Amber definitely goes better with black. Euro E36's went clear around 97ish, right, which is explain why they're so popular here. Everyone's gotta be euro.

What engines do the euro 323's have? Is it a 2.5 like our odd 323's or is it actually a 2.3? All of the E36's I've driven were 5 speed 328's and they were pretty damn fast.

Also, I love the way E36's look and drive. My big gripe is the build quality seems a bit sh*t compared to the older stuff. A lot of the ones I've been in have interior or door trim problems. The frameless windows on the 2 doors were really annoying.

Style 32's look good on them.

Could also try to score some DS2's or Contours from someone with an M3 looking to go bigger.

Lurch, I've been led to believe it's a 2.5. Contours are cool wheels, I much prefer them to DS2s/Sunflowers, but then again it's not my car, it's my dad's, so we'll have to wait and see. There a few issues to sort out before modifying can begin. The driver door window has an issue, the motor works, but the window doesn't move, the dealer said the window had simply come off the runner, but we'll have to take the door card off and see. Apart from that the interior needs a new stereo and gear knob. Externally, it needs a new driver's side wing, grille surround and there's a few patches of rust beginning to show so we'll get that sorted before it gets any worse. Apart from that it's a good runner, it needs a new throttle cable though, and the exhaust sounds like it's blowing, but after a quick look it all looks alright, this isn't too much of an issue because I think my dad's interested in buying a 328i centre and rear section at some point.

Of course the second one has straight pipes from the cat, personally I'd have them that way but I can't imagine my dad would appreciate the hassle of legalities, emissions etc.

As long as there's no M3 badge or some dude claiming it's a M3 I don't see much of a problem. The M3 bumper(s) and twisty side skirts is almost the only upgrade you can do to a stock E36 exterior wise to make it look better for cheap (DDM Tuning), but I agree though everyone does do them, I would've done it too if I had the money to get the bumpers painted.

Speaking of interior, gear knobs seem to be screwey on every e36 I've seen and been in, the interior in general in an E36. My moms 318 the gear knob came off, had a saggy glove box and the surrounding trim of the door handle came off aswell, etc. My 325 vert has been a bit more luckier in that I've only had a loose gear shifter and a tear in my drivers seat from the PO, although I think the motors of the top need replacement soon, getting a bit weak at its job.

edit; speaking of straight pipes I was so close to jump in and do it on my car, would rather do that than get a heavy m3 muffler for around the same price (80-120$). Was gonna get straight pipes from the cats back but just couldn't pull the trigger because I was afraid it might be too loud, and being loud in a 190hp E36, yeah..

with cats it probably wouldn't be too bad. they probably quieten the car as much as the boxes.

Got to drive my buddy's RX8 today, and what a machine. Sure it was just city driving, but god damn that thing can launch from a stop sign and just keep going! Shame that they stopped making Rotary engines, because god damn they are quick and loud little machines.

Too bad the engines still don't really last. Hard to get one to 100,000 miles, especially driven hard.

No kidding, he's around 80k and he's already stocked up on new seals, ignition bits, and is waiting to order new rotors soon. He knows it'll eventually sh*t on him, just not sure when tounge.gif

I'm not sure whether I like that or not, I suppose seeing it in real life at night would do it justice. I prefer it when there's a pattern and not just the whole light filled with red LED's.

I hate it, but then again I think that generation Eclipse is amongst the brain-bleedingly, eye-goungingly ugliest cars ever produced. Whoever thought that design of rear light was a good idea in the first place desires to be skinned with a potato peeler.

Again i have to completely disagree with you. The lights on those are ugly, but that is the best looking 90s sportscar. It looks well balanced and not as ugly as most horrible things that came from Japan and other places. I know this is awrong topic for discussing about cars appearance.

but that is the best looking 90s sportscar.

Not even close. Not even half close.

Indeed.

"Oh, I could have had a Ferrari 355, but instead I bought a detuned, chassis-chopped Evo with bodywork that resembles the Michelin Man"

As if that isn't bad enough, despite being a coupé they managed to make it over two hundred kilograms heavier, in AWD guise, than an Evo VI saloon.

You people are blind...

I'm afraid popular consensus is against you, good sir. I cannot name one single part of it, in isolation or combination, which I would consider aesthetically pleasing. Everything from the dumpy, gormless grin that is the front end, squashed satsuma profile, badly proportioned rear bumper, afterthought rear spoiler, those stupid side strakes on the Gen 3 model...the Gen 2 and 3 are truly hateful things. The Gen 3 is just a mess, plain and simple, and the Gen 2 looks rather like a Nissan S14 after too many pies. And the S14 was never a particularly good looking car.
