You'd have to depress the brake pedal before you can shift in an auto. I don't know if that helps answer you question as I don't know how the high RPM will affect it.

Have driven many autos that didn't require any brake to shift. Only newer electronic shifted ones require that.

Also, Ronnyboy. Transfercase and grinding? Please stop now. It's basically as simple as it rapes the clutches.

That's the response I've gotten from an adult who has driven a vehicle. Then again, most people around here don't know L from 1st gear in their cars.

I don't know what sort of cars you've driven but when I think about it now, even my '97 Infiniti requires the brake pedal to be depressed before you can physically move the gearstick. Brake pedal -> shift lock button -> shift. For my S350 and 745Li things are a bit different as you don't actually move the gearstick and instead just move it back and forth to select your gear. (the lag between selection and engagement of the gears is pretty bad and i'm always having to look at the dash to make sure I'm in the correct gear icon13.gif ).

97 is still new enough to be electronic. Start going back to the 70's and 80's (not sure if you've driven a car that old), and you start seeing a lot more cars that don't require the brake. Things that are fully hydraulic and don't have any electronic brain or sensors working with them.

But seriously... Im constantly amazed by how far safety has advanced in automotive design.

Just today I saw an article in a local newspaper about a woman who died in her mk3 Golf after losing control in a corner (and reportedly she was driving within the speed limit).

I can't see the picture.

Speaking of car safety, look at this unsafe minivan mid-sized MPV:

The 1997-2005 Pontiac Trans Sport, also known as IIHS' worst contender of all time.

Congrats Ochy. biggrin.gif

About saftey, yeah it's amazing how far it's came in the car world.

Also god damn, that M5 was mangled badly, then again 300KM/H will do that. Everyone makeing it out is a big testament to saftey as said before, but damn. Glad everyone's fine too.

So I'll be eventually doing a double DIN NBS dash swap in my Suburban. But this is old news. The new news is that I'll be replacing my head unit with a touchscreen LCD attached to a dual core AMD powered desktop in the center console. This poses three problems.

1. Rear audio controls

2. Eventual steering wheel controls

3. CD changer

Now the rear audio controls can be left alone until I have money for another screen, or place a networked All-in-one system there, using NAS for shared files.

The steering wheel controls, while a bit costly, can be taken care of with an adapter.

The CD changer though. This may end up being the biggest hassle. While it usefulness would be severely degraded with an in-dash computer, it would still have some function and maintain a factory appearance. The problem is, I have been unable to find any adapters for it, meaning I'll probably have to unswap the bottom housings and sell both changers. Even this in itself poses another problem.

What do I do with the empty space? It's about the size of single DIN head unit. I'm open to any and all ideas, but keep in mind I want a clean, factoryish look.

Edit: To those of you interested in the project, I have the heated power auto dimming mirrors from a 2000 Escalade, though I'm unsure if I want to install them or sell them. The passenger glass needs to be replaced.

I also have a comp/temp/autodim single display rear view mirror that I'm selling on ebay. If it hasn't sold in 30 days, I'll be getting a temp sensor and installing it.

I may be going back to pull all the (heated) seats out of the Escalade. I don't specifically recall them being ripped, but I'll have to check next time I'm there.

I don't like beer, so Vodka will have to do.

Really though, I was considering making the cup holders cooled. confused.gif

And those Escalade seats are so soft they're just as good as a massagers.

I want to move up there. confused.gif Nothing but stop and go traffic here. Mostly stopped. And when you finally do get to go you're behind someone that's content doing 25 in a 45, or someone that can't decide if they want 1/2 car length in front of them or ten, so to keep a steady speed without rear ending them, you need to leave about 10 car lengths between you and them. Which then invites people to pull out in front of you and do 20 under.

But that's enough of my rambling. I went to the scrapyard today and pulled another comp/temp mirror (sold the other one, think I'm keeping this one as it's nicer) and checked out the Escalade seats a little more in depth. The back seat looks faded, worn out, and there may be a little mold on the passenger side from where the window was broken and never covered. But it's nothing I can't take out with some detergent and a scrubby pad. But to use them, I would have to take them off the frames, and make some minor modifications to make them work with my frames. So I didn't get them today. The front seats, would be a bolt in swap, allow me to use all four headrests, and wouldn't need any modifications for the heated seat integration as the switches are on the seats. However the driver's seat is ripped exactly like mine. The passenger seat has two small rips in it compared to mine which has none, but looks like it will soon. So I didn't them.

I then came home today to find my Dad doing an estimate for a 600 square job, and told me we had another 200 square job in a week or two. So I then determined that I'd just buy the front seats and have the bottom leather replaced after we do this job, as I'd be working 40-50 hrs/week out of town so I wouldn't be using any gas during the week. I talked to a guy at an upholstery shop and he said to replace it with fake leather would be about $125 per seat, or between $200 and $400 per seat with real leather. Obviously my jewish ass would go with the fake leather, but still, Escalade seats with no rips.

tldr: f*ck city traffic. Buying escalade seats this weekend.

If you remember the beginnings of my E28 thread, I had a bit of mold on my carpet and seats. It was surprisingly easy to clean. Like just a wipe with a sponge was enough for most of it.

I would go with the real leather as opposed to the fake but that's just me. I can tell the difference with my ass. I think 200 per seat is more or less what we're quoted around here.

The detergent and scrubby pad is my new step one for cleaning leather and vinyl. I cleaned my seats with two different kind of leather cleaner when I got the burb, and it didn't do sh*t. About five swipes with a soapy scrubby pad had that seat looking like new. Well it didn't help the tears or the really worn down spots, but the color was like new...

I really want to, it's just that I don't want to spend $600+ on refinishing just the bottoms of my seats. I mean f*ck, the seats are only $25 a piece. Too many other things I can spend that money on.

I forgot to mention that I also decided to go ahead with the rear seats, assuming they'll fit with minimal modification. (Made a little diagram of my seats so I can compare when I go back this weekend, just to be sure.) I wasn't going to go through the effort to get heated Escalade rear seats that didn't match the other seats and I still couldn't use all four headrests.

Had someone reverse into me in a carpark today. I was pulling out of the junction at the bottom. I'd waited till it was clear and had half turned into the other road when some bloke in a Corsa in the space marked with the yellow circle decided he was coming out straight at me. When I saw he was coming out I stopped but he kept on reversing until I beeped the horn (After he'd already hit me). Luckily he just cracked the driver side wheel arch and left a smudge on the paint that I should be able to get off.

Then once we'd stopped so I could look at the damage he reversed straight out into the path of somebody else! How hard is it just to check behind you to see if anyones there. All the time people just seem to reverse out assuming its clear and people will stop for them.

Anyone of you guys have experience with vinyl roofs? Just called a guy who's selling this Buick, and he mentioned that it's started to bubble up under the vinyl. Does that mean a guy can expect holes or could it still be surface?

Could be either. I've seen a lot of gm's and fords just start eating holes away through the roof. It's the reason why vinyl tops are just a horrible idea to begin with. At least Cadillac learned there lesson and started jamming a fiberglass pad between the roof and top.

I figured. I wont buy it anyway, seems like it's alot of work either way because you'd have to tear the top of it.

Gonna have to replace the doors on the Volvo. The passanger door is still alright, but the drivers side door is shot, rusted through. It's coming to the point where I'm finding more faults than I'm fixing. lol.gif My plan now is to put some paint on the rockers, swap the seal around the windsheild and put the interior back in and sell it. Then I'll take out a cheap förmånsbil at work (I'll explain what that is below), preferably a KIA Cee'd, Mitsubichi Outlander or ASX, drive 'em for six months each while I put some cash aside to buy a proper older US-car. I've realised that on these dirt cheap cars there's always a ton of work underneath.

A förmånsbil, direct translation would be "privilege car", is a car that the company owns where I every month pay slightly more income tax in order to get to use the car. Say I make 30000SEK, and the förmånsvärde (difficult to translate properly, but direct translation would be "privilege value") is 3100SEK, my income tax would be 31% of 33100SEK instead of 30000SEK. The förmånsvärde includes service & parts, depriciation, insure and tax. Cheapest way to drive a brand new car there is.

Is there an equivelent in the US?

Hey ho!

I've been wanting to get a car outta sweden, as I live border to it in Norway. However I found that if I bought a $200 car, it would cost me $5500 to get it through tolls. Is there a way to work around this?

Not that I know of, not like that with Income tax and all that, sometimes companies will give out a company car for employees to use, but it’s usually if they transfer to a different city where all they do in said city is work, or if they’re on business trips somewhere then the company might provide on there.

But the way you described that involves the government running that, and as far as I know that we have nothing here like that, sounds like it might be a cool little thing to be able to do if needed.

A totally free company car is one thing, but if I'm paying for it in the slightest, I want to be able to do what I want to it. It sounds pretty sh*tty to me. Like a lease with with a different pay system.

Just heard this on the radio. The world's longest underwater tunnel will be built just outside my doorstep! It stretches across 14 kilometres!(That is 8 and a half miles!)

Work starts in November, and is scheduled for completion in 2018.

So there will be underwater gas stations and what not? And restaraunts and rest areas and what not. Or wrecker yards for that matter. Man, that's pretty long ways for no civilization.

How long is it? If it's a good long while, there's quite a bit you have to take into consideration when someone gets hungry, or runs out of fuel, or breaks down and what not.
