The Peloton: General Cycling Topic

Well, his mother is the driving force behind this new investigation and she has always said that he was murdered. I still don't believe he was, but that's just me.

And seeing as though this topic is still up here, might as well add that Geraint Thomas won Gold at the Commonwealth Games Road Race, and after his massive bad luck at the TDF this year, Jack Bauer (again, not 24 lol) took Silver

Go ahead. I'm going to make this the general Cycling topic from now on.

Cool Max (you are now my favourite, since Raavi did not even cared to answer my last pm...), W2B surely deserves to be the OP on this newly renamed thread, I thought this would be quickly buried...

Not many people around here atm, mostly just the OP, me , Hodgey (sometimes, as he is on many other topics...) and many guests, but I'm sure we can make it interesting enough :sly:

I'm now watching Tour of Poland. Yesterday's stage was epic, with an heavy blizzard storm in the middle and many riders crashing.

I'm also on top on "Volta a Portugal" - Hard race, though the top non/Portuguese rider is just the newly Astana signing Luis Leon Sanchez, 5th overall so far.

Edit I suggest "Cycling Gathering".

Well OK Big Nige.

@Eram - absolutely no cycling showing over here at the moment, so I'm just waiting for the Vuelta

@W2B - Shame on your TV broadcasters.

Tour of Poland is being great. Steephill, firstrow, wiziwig, etc. always display some links to follow the atm cycling races.

Edit Amazing fail by M Mathews, 2nd place celebrating as a stage winner, yotube must see.

So, I'm now following the ENECO Tour!

Guardini (Astana) won it today (gale 6-7 cross winds, meaning ).

I can update this overall, if anyone cares enough (W2B excluded, I know you do mate, see you on La Vuelta...).

Eneco Tour last 2 days resume:

Stage 2 - Stybar won it on sprint and takes the yellow jersey. L. Boom (+1") is 2nd and Vanmarcke (+6") is 3rd overall.

Stage 3 - Time Trial (9,6 Kms) won by Dumoulin, beating Cancellara by 2" and Geraint Thomas by 10"

Boom is now leader with Dumoulin and Quinziato 2nd and 3rd both at 4".

Edit - Stage 4 - Sprint finish with Bouhanni 1st, Mezgec 2nd and Nizzolo 3rd. No changes on overall.

Big crash some 300 mts from the finish line with 2 catapult effects. Porsev and Stybar (deffending champion, I'm not sure if he'll be starting tomorrow) both went down really hard.

Check it here after about min 17 http://www.steephill.tv/players/youtube3/?title=Last+15+Km+of+Stage+4&dashboard=eneco-tour&id=8MfPyHB4qtw&yr=2014

Stages 5, 6 and 7 will be hard as hell. It's on the Ardennes so there are some pavé and a lot of the typical "walls" of that region. Gilbert is 10th some 21" away, but I'm sure he'll be onto something for the final 3 days...

Stybar injured his face/mouth pretty badly and he lost 3 teeth as his face hit the tarmac. Ouch.

Eneco Tour Stages 5&6:

Stage 5

Amazing stage with a lot of hills/walls (on the routes of Tour of Flanders). Boom attacking everytime he could (only managed to finish 5th, though just 1" behind)

Avarmaet was 1st, with Dumoulin 2nd and Brutt 3rd, both 1" behind (together with Breschel and Boom)

On Overall Dumoulin became 1st with Boom 2nd (+1") and Quinziato 3rd (+11")

Stage 6

Also an hilly stage (on the routes of Liege-Bastogne-Liege), but not as spectacular as stage 5

Wellens was 1st, with Boom 2nd (+50") and Avarmaet 3rd (+52") together with Dumoulin

On Overall Wellens is now 1st with Boom 2nd (+7") and Dumoulin 3rd (+13")

Tomorrow is the final stage, on the routes of Amstel Gold Race, I'm looking forward to it!

Congrats to Wellens for winning it (stage 6 was is 1st ever win as a pro!)

Time for La Vuelta '14!

Edit: ah screw it, I'm not even gonna bother with updating this post with results or whatever like I did with the TDF - too little interest in cycling on these forums.

Good start by MTN-Qhubeka though haha, finishing the TTT in 12th place... Edited by W2B

I've been off on holidays :D

@W2B -Surely MTN will win some stage, don't you think?

Which one?

Climbing sprint with Ciolek (don't think so) or Pardilla (yehah) on a breakaway hilly one?

2016 Vuelta was just announced to start (@Oporto) some 250Kms from my home.

I'll be there and surely welcome you to come and meet me.

Take care my SA friend.

Well, welcome back then. I haven't actually been following the Vuelta as much as I thought I would because I've been quite busy. I watched the first couple of stages, missed the last few. Hoping to see more in the second half of the race.

But yeah, MTN better win a stage haha (I don't think they will though, but you never know. They've already tried their luck in a couple of breakaways).

Anyway, nice to see that Edvald Boasson Hagen decided to join the team for the next couple of years after 5 years with Team Sky, despite receiving offers from other top teams.

He was involved in another crash a couple of days ago, but he's fine. Currently in 5th place, 28 seconds behind new leader Quintana, with the first ITT coming up on Tuesday.

Don't know if I'm talking to myself here...

But it definitely wasn't Froome's day today as he finished 10th in the TT. He lost quite a bit of time and is now 1'18" behind new leader Contador who had a much better day, crossing the line with the 4th fastest time. Quintana crashed and lost more than 3 minutes to Contador as a result.

Tony Martin won the stage as expected.

Loving the overall classification at the moment... Contador and Valverde (Probably my top 2 riders) first and second. Hope it stays that way till the end...

I'm also here mate, sorry for not posting much lately :)

Quintana's crash (and the time he lost) surely made his team leadership (over Valverde) being discussed with Movistar staff.

3 mins is a lot of time, so who can tell to Valverde that Quintana is still the leader, or vice-versa (after Quintana was left out of TdF)?

Anyway, I don't see Valverde winning it, though tomorrow's stage will probably clarify this leadership thing...

I expects attacks from Quintana, Anacona, Sanchez, Rodriguez and/or Uran on the final climb.

Gesink, Danielson, Aru and some others that are also further down on overall will probably have a go too, before the final climb).

Contador hasn't quite won it yet, but almost.

Poor Froome performance , after all the crashes at TdF, I expected more from him and less from Contador, go figure it :)

Amazing stuff by T Martin (the TT king) and Uran, showing that Omega really knows about it.

Edit - Today's stage, about 20kms after start, crash with a lot of riders and Quintana abandoned!

Yep, a damn shame! Two nasty crashes for Quintana in less than 24 hours.

He will definitely be the one to watch at next year's tdf.

@W2B - I'm really sorry that I haven't been that regular in here. Work & Family you know...

I've watched live today's stage but just until 68kms to go and will only watch the rest of it in about 3 hrs from now, no spoilers now!

Tomorrow will be pretty much the same for me, final 50-60kms to be watched some 8 hrs after.

Next week I'll be off-work, so I'll probably be more present here, though as you said it's just us and Hodgey sometimes :(

Yesterday I've seen something quite unusual. The final circuit was on an air force base (Tour of Alberta).

They even ride along a big airstrip, so huge that the peloton just looked as a very thin line when filmed by heli (yes some tv heli on a military base!), but sadly I couldn't find any pic of this.

Just for the record:

Teo Bos, already signed for MTN for 2015, just won today's T Alberta stage :)

^ Nice!

Btw, I see Theo Bos out-sprinted Daryl Impey, who crossed the line in second place. Good day for South African/African cycling :p

It was the best day for MTN-Qhubeka in the Vuelta so far, with 3 riders in the break-away (more than any other team), and then Meintjies crossing the line in 5th place.

Also a great ride by Froome, as he out-climbed his rivals to 3rd overall.

Impey just won the last stage on Alberta and also took the gen classification overall win by 1 sec from Dumoulin (strong blow to him, he had the leader's jersey since day 1). Congrats to him and SA cycling!

I loved yesterday's final climb at Vuelta.

Amazing Froome, after being left a bit behind by the others, he managed to finish really strong in front off all the other favorites.

In some 2 hrs I'll see how he (and the others) did today.

Nice hat :p

Surely he'll be back in next year's TDF. Missed him this year after he was left out because of that whole masking agent thing, but thankfully he has been cleared of any wrongdoing.

Whoa... "Fist fight" between Brambilla from Quickstep and Rovny from Tinkoff-Saxo on today's stage haha, right next to the referee's car. Don't see that too often.

No? When did that happen? I've seen quite a few headbutting incidents though, most notably Mark Renshaw who started headbutting another rider like a mad man during the finishing sprint at the TDF few years ago. He was kicked out of the Tour almost immediately. I still see Cavendish doing the same thing every now and then...

Ah..

And just as I type this, Brambilla has been disqualified! Don't know what the hell he was doing.

Edit: now I see Rovny was also disqualified

Also, a little bit of sad news as one of the police officers following the race died after a motorcycle accident during Monday's st16. I saw where it happened, but at the time no one knew what was going on there.
