Mostly, it's Cityscape to blame, both of the maps shown in this topic so far were put together with that program, 3ds Max just handles the placements and model exports for the game...(basically, that's about all it did)

I think that solely 3ds Max should be used to get best results... it takes longer to develop with it, but i'm sure it's worth it in the end!

The problem i'm having now is that i have little to NO IDEA how to get the real-life environments into the game, with all its vast detail and game hostility.

Even for Carraways, i find it a bit difficult to get by and make a decent replica in the game!

For this to work right, i think a map sketch should be drawn first, with all roads, hills and layout in general and then it can easily be modeled using 3ds Max by placing a map sketch plane and start drawing roads from there, and after that just forming the landscapes/city blocks by creating new faces from the roads' bordering edges by pressing the shift key and dragging.

I really wish i had a better idea how to minimize the real-life Hamptons map into a 6000x6000 sized texture

But what are you going to make anyways?

Modifying LC sounds like a good idea and is much simpler

Fun fact:

I had started some work on that before and the idea is quite old by now... Sadly, i have to dissappoint you yet again, all progress in the following pictures below is deleted :/

It's just that i felt the work was useless so i deleted it because it would bother me if i didn't, and also my HDD is only 320GB of capacity, so i can't really afford the luxury of having a giant scrapyard of files on my PC like most other people today can!

The thing is, the conctruction (site) is there for a reason: It makes the game world more interesting.

The thing is, the conctruction (site) is there for a reason: It makes the game world more interesting.

But if your trying to make LC in a different time period, like when GTA V was set, or today. Construction sites are a thing that need to change depending on whether the time being represented is before or after the time represented by the original map. You can always make new construction sites. However, the one thing that would be more interesting would be the finishing of the Amir Towers. Finishing those would be a major change to the map.

o-ONE-WORLD-TRADE-CENTER-facebook.jpg

Generally it wouldn't be in the right position compared to the real NYC, but then again, there are other things in IV's map that aren't in the right position. It also makes sense because of what Yusif said.

He did. When you play the Yusuf missions that start out at the construction site by heli tours, he talks about it as if he is developing there.

Other key factors.

-Heli tour pilot says Yusuf is building there as he flies by the site.

-The Playboy X mission in GTA IV where you clear out the guys at that site. Yusuf is mentioned as to having union problems there, hence why you're going there to take care of it.

-I remember hearing something on the in game news about people protesting him building there as it would alter the LC skyline.

Yeah, but those are all talking about where it is. I can't recall Yusuf specifically talking about the location like what I'm thinking you said in the original post.

Are you trying to say that the construction site may be something else that Yusuf is building, and not the sky scraper? I like to believe that the construction site is where the tower is going to be built, and in LC's history, where the LC version of the Twin Towers were. Otherwise that aspect is completely left out and that would annoy me. The fact that when you look at LC during present day, there isn't the new WTC sky scraper, and there isn't any Twin Towers if you picture LC during the 1970's, 1980's, 1990's, and early 2000's would annoy me as that is an important land mark in the real NYC (tallest buildings constructed in NYC). The location would be the best suited place for that sense there isn't a construction site where the WTC is in real life. Also in GTA IV's map, that spot isn't very far away from the real location, and seeing as how some buildings are moved from their real locations, it makes sense to me that the location is where it is.

What.

No, I wasn't talking about any of that. I just saw your post "...It also makes sense because of what Yusif said." and I asked you if Yusuf actually said anything about the location of that building site because I couldn't recall hearing anything about it.

Why not? lol, i think the map is bad too, better to restart the entire project but with less ambition which would mean less content but better immersion in the scenery and better quality!

Couldn't you just edit it in 3DS Max instead of deleting it?

Oh, I see. When I said "Yusuf said" I meant what he said about building the tallest building in the city, and that location is where he is building.

I don't think so. Fixing it up in 3ds Max takes longer than it would've taken to re-build a much more decent-looking terrain from scratch

I would say that it's also harder to fix it than to start from scratch

Better safe than sorry i guess :)

You can now DOWNLOAD the 2nd scrapped map :D

Also, i forgot to answer one of the questions posted here before:

Oh. So you want to do everything once again?

I don't know really, maybe i'll do it all once again, maybe i won't - i don't want to promise anything because i might just dissappoint you again... and i don't want that
One thing is certain, if i WILL do it, then it will deffinetly be in a smaller scale and ambition than it initially was because i just can't do it all by myself and i was obviously thinking too big with all of this.

Dude, take a look at some mountain images at google earth and Street View, take some reference images. It will help a LOT, and you can create a strategy how you can create everything, how to place things. I can show you some sample images, if you wish.

I'd like to see some, please.

For Example:

Reference Image 1:assassin-country-wallpaper-and-borders-7

Take a Look at this first image. it is a regular countryside scene with a road

Note that:

-The land standards is basically a Big green field, and some tree islands (trees grouped in a little piece of earth) scattered all over the field.

That helps creating the landscape

-The road is raised up above the farms. that is because when a possible flood occur, the road can't be flooded.

-A 2 meters space is left between the road and the fences, or the farm limits. That because the government may enlarge the street, or create one more lane

-A big hole are built near the fences, to water escapes.

-Trees are used to the farm limits with another farms, like a big natural parting fence.

-The road signs. Bridge guardrail is painted with stripes.

And many other things you can observe just looking at this image, and using by reference.

Reference Image 2:

country-road_00240413.jpg

That second image is a dirt road, very common at the countryside. Note That:

-Bushes are on the middle of the street. It grown in there.

-Bushes are on the sides of the street, too, and it is very diverse (varied types of vegetation at the road sides)

-The bushes leafs. It is a great reference for do the textures.

-The tree types

and etcetera.

Reference Image 3:

highway-wallpaper-2.jpg

Note that:

-It has guardrail on the road borders

-Right lane is darker, because trucks ride on it and their weight pulls the asphalt down.

-Central lane is lighter, because no one drives in there

-Tire marks are on the street

-You can find tall grass or small vegetation at some parts in the grass

Reference Image 4:

Base-jumping-Kjerag-Norway-2011_670-1-67

That is a snapshot that shows a base of a mountain

Note That:

-At the mountain base do not exist so much grass. It is just dirt and rocks scattered all over the place.

-It has a little sign of vegetation at some points in the mountain.

And it is the last one:

[link removed. Might be a false positive but my AV is bitching, so I figured out it'd be better to remove it -Silent]

Note that:

-Vegetation seems like a cotton, with some holes between (It can be done lowpoly with planes geometries as layers, some mask texture and creativity, if you wish i can explain later.

About the new terrain, GTARandom, if you really want to do everything again, by 0, watch the Paul Neale's video tutorial that i sent in the previous post.

Take a look at the reference images above, that images will give you a good reference about many nature and manmade elements. Before doing any work, you have to pay attention at some details, and only reference images give you that details.

The important isn't that

Some factors exists at every place in the world, like the darker right lane, the vegetation down in the street, the fences and the big hole near it, the mountain base, and etcetera. The point is about gathering all details and putting it on a map.

Otherwise, you still have the Google street view option to give you some good ref

Look at Catskill Mountains...

Central_Catskills_from_Twin_south_summit

How would this be put in-game, i really wonder?!

So much vegetation and detail... Adirondack Mountains are similar though, but i think they're even harder to replicate in a game-friendly environment!

It may look like a greenery desert, but i don't think it really is just that, there's vegetation all over the damn thing like grass and probably trees and other stuff

UnitedStatesNewYorkCatskillMtnsKaaterski

It's beautiful though in real life, no doubt about that.

That all looks very nice. For me, living in the Chicago area, if I ever drive elsewhere, it is boring as hell once you leave Chicago Land, so I never really get to see what beautiful country looks like very often. Though there are forests around which are the less boring parts, they aren't hilly like that. Just flat terrain, and corn fields. If you ever look at mid west country side from the air, it looks like a flat grid of squares. It goes like that for miles. Guess that is what makes me a city person I guess.

stock-footage-a-wide-angle-pan-of-a-midw

This is about as hilly as it gets.

300px-Flatland.png?version=ccf73e232977e

And this is what it mainly looks like, + corn.

@MenuET: Those details you noticed I guess would be what many country side based maps have been missing. Good eye there.

On Flight Simulator X modding, this problem is easily solved by picking only 2 planes and texturing it with tree photos. it is a good resource that you can get a great result, and dont spend so much memory, because each tree just have something about 15 or 16 triangles.

Look at here:

Same thing i explained above. The mountain trees can be done with this technique. Same thing about the vegetation towards the street.

Yes, but Flight Simulator doesn't involve a player actually cruising on the map surface(runways/aiports being the biggest exception ofcourse!)

This is GTA, everything has to be screaming with detail, in the skies and on ground level!

Although, your idea can be taken into consideration anyway

You dont need to end this project, even with cityscape you can get good results, however it is a must to edit the geometry and add more details.

I have started modelling from scratch, its more time consuming but you can get much better results.

I think i preffer 3ds Max over a combination of that program with Cityscape.

Nothing is going to convince me any more that Cityscape is any good for the development of these maps.

So will there be stuff like UFOs or fancy new clouds? Or maybe even a new timecyc? That'd be cool, seeing as IV's current timecyc doesn't capture green areas too good.

I used Flight Simulator as a driver sim with a car. It is not that bad. You can't note the difference from the ground unless you are very near to the tree

Anyway, you can still use that technique as a long distance model, like GTASA Gostown6 did and use the regular trees near the player

Another suggestion would be the Mount Kisco area of New York which is just north of NYC, it was used in the film Need For Speed, that gives a good reference point of how it transitions from woodland country into the city during a race.
