I'm not exactly sure what game this model is going into, perhaps GTA IV because it can use specular and normal maps even though that engine doesn't use them sufficiently. or i could wait until GTA V is released for PC and prey that modding tools will be created or come with it :p. But i do plan to have a full facial rig for this model :).

I Used Mudbox to do the sculpt, and a program called 3D coat to make a low res version of the sculpt, Xnormal to bake the details and 3DS max to UV and tweak, and Tool Bag for real time rendering, if you have any more questions about how i made it feel free to message me i can go into more detail there :).

Thank you all for the comments, i'm pretty satisfied with the model as of now, and i feel it looks like Tommy, so i made a few lighting scenarios to test the spec and the normal map to see if it still looks like Tommy in different lighting, like it would in game. i'm happy with the results.

Thanks for the positive feedback :D more work done, i feel happy with the face over all, the hair needs correcting with texture adjustments, and minor detail like moles, imperfections on the skin will also be added.

I see this project as a real learning curve, I feel my skills have improved loads since my first post on the first page of this topic.
I'm satisfied with the accuracy of the model and texture, so i'm going to pretty much finish up, clean the textures, fix all the minor bugs, and give the ear a new texture, then its pretty much done until release of mod tools for GTA 5 PC here is a comparison with the new texture updates

You really are nailing it, Cautious.
Glad to see you improved so much lately!

My suggestion is that if you're wanted it to look more realistic, and fit with today standard, ditch the original model as main ref. Seriously. GTA VC is old, and their character look cartoon-y as hell. Use it only as side ref.
Your main ref should be a realistic human head. Learn how the muscle form the face, by looking at a lot of anatomy ref in the internet. Take the defining feature of Tommy Vercetti by looking the original model, and translate it to the base realistic head.

I'm not really good at speaking things, so here's a quick paintover i made.

Basically :
- Eyes too far apart. The spaces between both eye is exactly one-eye long.
- Mouth area need to be defined, especially the laugh lines, and below lips area. And for some part, it needs to be smoothed out, like his cheek.
- Zygomatic bones of Tommy needs to be defined a lot more, judging by the original look.
- Eye area need to be defined.

- Forehead.

I'm no expert, so if you didn't agree at some of my point, then ignore it.

translating Tommy into the HD era is difficult, maybe impossible, no offense 69-black-69, but the model you are showing makes Tommy look bad.

 

maybe you should just take Ray Liotta as a model or this art by Patrick Brown:

a nice mix between Tommy V and Ray Liotta IMO

 

again, just a suggestion, i imagine that modelling a believable human face must not be easy.

 

maybe could you consider cutting a bit his pompadour hair?

Making a realistic head is pretty easy though. What make it hard is the fact that people interpretation of Tommy differ from each other.
You say he should look like Ray Liotta, while i didn't see any Ray Liotta resemblance in the original look, only the fact that he is Tommy VA doesn't mean he should look like him.
And that Patrick Brown fanart of Tommy, while it look badass, it didn't look like Tommy at all. Just another generic pretty-face protagonist interpretation of Tommy.

So, it all come down to Cautious himself.

If you think your original model is fine, then it's fine that you ignore my suggestion or somebody else.
If there's a criticism or suggestion, doesn't mean you should follow them. Do what you think is best for you.

Wow that's actually amazing, well done mate, cant wait to see this in GTA V. :)

And anyways its kinda hard to make Tommy look "exactly" the same, since people in older games didn't look like humans XD

That was closest it can get. I appreciate your hard work on this one:)

Hey Peeps thank you for the comments, and I'm preparing for GTA V character replacement tools, so I have done alot more work on Tommy, new model adjustments and texture edits, working on a new eye texture, but here is the progress, i will work on his outfit next

Your opinion, can't please everyone, it seems that more people are liking it than disliking it so i will continue to work on it. If you read through the topic of the Tommy you proffer, the same thing was happening there. some people loved it, some hated it. But i would proffer if you gave some constructive criticism rather than saying its getting weirder and weirder, just something to think about next time! ;)

@Cautious you are making some nice progress , the model was very great ! but i have to agree with _F_ , your model gets a bit weird , i would really suggest you to make your tommy looks more like the paintover 69_black_69 , because his paintover looks a bit more Tommy-ish.

 

and i think you should improve the forehead of your model , looks very wide IMO.
