Things GTA IV did better than GTA V

Oh come on man.

Why not? He's the crappiest protagonist in the entire GTA series anyway (not counting Advance).

To be honest I would say Mike (from Advance) was actually better than Trevor.

no GTA Protagonist is bad , all of them rocks , they did what they have to , but sometime's they did wrong things that makes a whole life regret ( such as Franklin killing michael ) , and i know trevor is a crazy , psycho-a**ed protagonist in SA that would kill anyone just to satisfy his bloodlust , but that DID NOT Make him a crappy person , kampret.

to know the fact that trevor actually a good person but just become bad because of rough childhood , broken families and stuffs , it can be seen from his loyalty to his friends ( Michael , brad , trevor ,etc. ) or his deep respect to his mother

I eat GTA V fanboys before I eat breakfast. Then after breakfast I eat SA fanboys for a mid morning snack. :)

come on dude , quit it , whatever it's SA , V or IV , it's still gta right ? even i personally thinks that IV is way better than V or SA , but im also a fanboy of IV and SA , if you say , you ate V Fanboy or SA Fanboy , what about IV Fanboy that was also V and SA Fanboy ? :/

The "hardware limitations" excuse makes me laugh. I'll guarantee even in the XB1, PS4 and PC versions (minus mods) of GTA V the protagonists will still fall like they're wearing lead helmets.

It has nothing to do with limitations. R* made the physics that way for GTA V for a reason.

In regards to Niko falling I personally find it feels more natural. Maybe it's not entirely realistic, but it feels more natural than the Saints Row like physics in GTA V.

oh well , niko is from the army right ? since he's joined a war or something , so yeah , it's realistic for him to do a jump from a high height and try to land with on legs instead of landin' in his head.

Listening to LRR (Liberty Rock Radio) The Sisters of Mercy, Dominion, in a Maverick helicopter at that helipad in Alderney overlooking Algonquin, or the helipad on top of the old casino, whilst being chased by other players or the police on Free Mode, and just having tons of fun flying around LC whilst seeing an unknown amount of chasers on the ground trying to follow you but failing. Especially if at night, even more fun.

Or listening to David Bowie - Fascination on LRR. Both great songs I think whilst on Free Mode, in a helicopter and being chased by others.

1. I did not say that Trevor is a crappy person, but he's a crappy GTA PROTAGONIST.

2. Not an excuse. Michael is a professional bank robber, right? Trevor is an ex-Canadian Air Force, right? Both of them should've known that you really don't want to land on your head while falling.

I think Trevor is a hideous disgrace. Don't know why players dig him so much.

He's psycho but he's far from brave. He talks of loyalty but uses his 'friends' to risk their lives helping him out.

Niko would never put his family and friends in danger, as seen in the final mission where he objected Roman (if he's still alive) and/or Jacob throughout the pursuit and telling them to leave before storming the warehouse. His rescue of Roman from Dimitry's goons was pure heroic, and the taunt / dialogue made it even more so.

Niko's loyalty and bravery is seen in many missions.

I dislike V but I genuinely thought Trevor(and Michael) were as good as the writing allowed for. Can anyone explain to me in detail why they think he is a bad character? There are things I would judge someone for doing but that is very different from judging the quality of a protagonist.

People hated trevor because he would pull people in with kindness and then kill or use them to his advantage

Well that's certainly true...the reason he is abusive to whatever friends he has is because he feels he needs to be to keep them from going, likely due to repeated abandonment earlier in life. I don't see that as exceptionally poor writing.

I don't think its poor writing either but people who don't understand Trevor's character cant seem to see the abandonment issues he has

There is nothing good about Trevor's character writing as he's totally inconsistent and cheap. People just give him credit for God knows what.

Trevor's backstory

Born in Canada, which he is ashamed of with a physically abusive father and emotionally abusive mother. Once old enough, he joined the airforce since he was good at flying planes. One of his dreams was to "drop the atom bomb". This would be short lived, as he would soon be kicked out due to being mentally unstable. After this, he started doing small, petty crimes as a drifter. This would change once he met Michael while transporting cargo across the Canadian/American border. Michael was being chased by a man, who Trevor would kill with a flare gun. He and Mike would have to bury the body. After this, they became good friends and partners in crime. His first bank hit was a failure, as the clerk knew and IDed him. Trevor did time in prison, while Mike met Amanda who was a stripper at the time and started a family. Mike wanted to settle down but Trevor didn't want him to "turn soft". Trevor soon met Brad and the trio would take part in robberies. Soon, the Ludendorff heist would go down, resulting in Brad's death and Mike's faked death. He would mourn for his best friend's death, while writing letters to Brad, who he believed to be in prison. Trevor would lay-low all the way in San Andreas where he would cook and sell meth, as well as smuggle guns.

Niko's backstory

His father was abusive and his mother was a very unhappy woman, but still loved her son. There was no electricity in Niko's house until he was twelve. Growing up in the Balkans during the Yusoslav Wars was a harsh environment to grow up in and as such, Niko became a child soldier, around 15 years old. He would soon become a helicopter pilot and infantryman. During these times, he witnessed horrible acts, such as Roman's mother being raped and murdered, which he would never tell Roman about, instead saying she died in a fire. Another one is when he witnessed 50 children sitting neatly against wall, with their neck's slit and their hands chopped off. "The creature that can do this, doesn't have a soul". One day, Niko's squad, most friends from his home village, were ambushed and killed, only 3 survived, one being Niko. After this, Niko left the army and had trouble finding work. He soon became wrapped in the European criminal underworld, where he subsequently did time in prison. After getting out, he starting smuggling people across the Adriatic Sea for Ray Bulgarin. One day, the ship sank and Niko had to swim for his life to safety. Everything on the ship was lost, so Bulgarin blamed Niko and made his life impossible in Europe. He then joined the merchant navy where he could move to Liberty City. "Life is complicated. I've killed people. Smuggled people. Sold people. Perhaps here, things will be different."

However, backstory isn't everything. What happens during the actual game we play, plays a part of the character, too. Trevor's character is incredibly inconsistent. He bitches and moans the entire game about Michael faking his death. He takes over a guy's house unrealistically and then kills the man and his girlfriend. He is always putting down his loyal friends, Ron and Wade. He's just a crappy character, and this is made even worse due to the fact we have to play as him. Niko, on the other hand, is almost flawless. He goes into Liberty City for two reasons. One, find the man who betrayed his squad 10 years ago. Two, escape from Bulgarin's reach in Europe. Oh, and to see his cousin. Once he finds the man he was looking for, we are rewarded one of, if not, the best moment in the Grand Theft Auto series. His story breaks the mold of a character seeking revenge or power and is awarded it. While Niko does seek revenge, it isn't a rewarding feeling once he is presented it. Niko's character and story are as close to perfect that i have ever seen in a video-game. Trevor is one of the worst. He's inconsistent, annoying, too loud and throws hissy fits. Niko is calm, cool and collective.

There is a difference between likeability and quality. Otherwise villains often wouldn't be fan favorites. Niko's morals being more noble doesn't mean he is better written, that's simply the personality given to him.

@thekillerdonuts everything you said about niko is what makes him a unique character. He is the best of all gta [email protected] that's the only reason I like trevor

The thing I find funny about Trevor is he's meant to represent the average GTA player after people complained about Niko's morals getting in the way of gameplay yet he goes "Wah, Wah, no one gives a sh*t about me" even though he brutally murders Floyd and Debra and is generally a bully towards the weak. Who's the real hypocrite?

Atleast Niko has a reason to critique the American way of life and had a genuinely tough upbringing.

Trevor is someone who needed more trips to the woodshed. He's such an unappealable mess he makes CJ likeable in ways. Not even Saints Row deserves a character like that.

Niko Bellic is a character that I can always connect to whenever I play GTA IV. Something that I find that is missing in V. Niko's struggle in LC, Roman's struggle in LC, all of the characters of the IV with their own different struggle in LC. It is something I think that is powerful. Like I have mentioned before. GTA IV has something of a great unique atmosphere, and I'm not hating V, but I can't find myself "settle" with driving around LS, or the characters for that matter.

The little things in LC, especially if you haven't played the game in a while, it still has that fresh feel of going to Alderney, or Dukes, or driving around the alley ways or back streets, discovering places that you have never been before, even though you've played the game many times in the past 6 years, you still feel lost just driving around LC and exploring every little detail. Especially going to colony island and just spending time there either playing with others or just on your own.

No doubt you can get lost around LS in V, but I think it is too big to really get lost. Just how I think about LS. Again not hating LS, but LC has something of endless fun just driving around a compact city and finding small places to hide.

Hiding around LC is like being a phantom in a alley way making sure you don't get found by others.

@sonofliberty your right about niko that's what makes unique. I think trevor could of been a better character if he didn't bully his way to get what he wants.

Being a bully is a big part of his character. It would get boring pretty quick if every protagonist acted the same way.
