Things GTA IV did better than GTA V

Indeed.

It's unfortunate that the A.I. in GTA V is too aggressive in several aspects, including citizen behavior. That should've been exclusive to enemy gang members in my opinion, and probably a less hostile level of it for neutral gangs as well, which was the case for GTA IV, following the mission Bleed Out, and standardly in TBOGT, albeit it this wasn't the case in TLAD. However, they hassle the player as a response to harassment in all three entries.

Fo real, I once went AFK in GTA V after switching to Franklin outside his favourite weed shop on the beach.

Came back 5 minutes later to find him outside the hospital... Obviously killed just for f*cking breathing/standing within a pedestrian for longer than 10 seconds. The AI in V is a sick joke and I can't believe it works the way it does.

In TBoGT, I was doing drug wars. To my surprise, you can't fail it by leaving your friends behind because they automatically given the same type of car as you and teleported close to you if they get too far.

GTA V.......of all things you could have picked from, this isn't the one you took? No, I have to babysit braindead AI if I don't want a fail screen.

You don't even fail if they get killed. Same with gang wars in TLAD. Only time you fail from them dying is if it happens on the way to the drug/gang war, once it starts all bets are off. I sometimes let all the bikers start fighting and just throw pipe bombs in the middle of them killing as many friends as enemies lol. Zero babysitting required!

I don't know if anybody mentioned it (there are like 1000 comments) but I always thought the explosions felt more realistic in gta iv. The blurry effect in gta v is cool but the explosion itself is bigger in gta iv and in that way, it felt more realistic in my eyes.

I checked online images, here you can see both gta iv and v explosions screenshot.spacer.png

The explosions are awesome! They feel so much more powerful and are much more detailed. I still remember how brilliantly powerful it felt/sounded the first time I used grenades in the Deconstruction for Beginners mission. I love how you can get killed, sent flying, just get knocked back a few steps or have your ears ringing and momentary muffled sound depending on how close you are to the explosion. In V it's just automatic death if an explosion touches you at all.

The way cars explode is better too. In V if you blow up a car any nearby ones will also just explode in an instant chain reaction so it's over in 2 seconds. In IV nearby ones affected by the explosion will set on fire first so you have to wait, and you get an unpredictable chain of cars setting on fire, the people inside running or getting caught in the flames and rolling out, and exploding, and it can go on for a nice long time and all kinds of different things can happen with it. There's also a nice balance where if you're driving a car and hit something hard it'll never explode instantly on impact but will set on fire first allowing you to escape, but if you're not in the car it can explode on impact so you can still make them explode by bailing out before it hits. Whereas in V cars exploding instantly while you're driving them if you try to do jumps is a constant annoyance.

But it can be better

Going off-topic in this thread here, but it took me some time to finally realize how average and unmemorable V's soundtrack is. For a game that has probably one of the biggest and most expensive licensed soundtrack out of any game in the franchise, I founded half of the songs in it painfully mediocre and forgettable. There's a reason why "Lady (Hear Me Tonight)", "Music Sounds Better With You", "Radio Gaga", "Hood Gon Love It" and "Sleepwalking" are the most recurring songs when it comes to V's soundtrack & memes - they were above average.

And funnily enough, half of the tracks you've mentioned are trailer songs, I remember one of the key things that hyped me the most about the trailers back when I watched them was how the radio stations were going to be compossed following the songs they used, wonder how I felt when I got halfway through the game's story and my favorite songs ended up being the ones I listened the first.

"Music Sounds Better With You" and "above average" don't belong in the same sentence lol.

I think V has some good stations but it's only about a quarter of them, many only have 1 or 2 good songs or are just straight trash so I never put them on. I like the classic rock, pop, country, punk, (most) rap stations, and Vinewood Boulevard Radio and Radio Mirror Park are nice additions as stations that are unique to the game and reflect the place/time well. But the rest are pretty bad. Also has songs from after 2013/as late as 2019 added which is f*cking stupid and prevents it feeling like a period piece. And the newer stations added from online have no real identity and seem to just be a random mix of genres. In IV I listen to all stations except Electrochoc and Tuff Gong (I don't even think the song selections on them are bad they're just not genres I enjoy) and every station has great songs and a strong identity.

What I like about Grand Theft Auto IV's soundtrack is that it's relatively uniform. It follows the gritty theme of the game. Radio Broker is alternative rock, Liberty Rock is classic, LCHC is hardcore, you've got a reggae and dancehall station, the rap stations focus on east coast hip hop, and San Juan Sounds plays reggaton because of the large Hispanic community in LC, and you've got a nice electornic selection that fits the vibe of LC. Everything fits the vibe of Liberty City.

Grand Theft Auto V's radio selection is a mess. From my understanding, Non-Stop Pop FM is basically 3 radio stations jammed into one; I think there was supposed to be a house station originally in the beta but it was cut but Stardust's "Music Sounds Better With You" and Modjo's "Lady" survived the cut. There is WAY too much dad rock and not enough alternative rock. There is no EDM station which feels weird because EDM was a huge thing in 2013; instead we got Soulwax which was nice but felt like it tried too hard to be Electro-Choc; I'd rather R* just do an EDM station mostly filled with unknown artists with a few mega hits from artists like Avicii and Armin van Buuren, and it could've been hosted by van Buuren himself like he does the State of Trance mixes. Then of course they added all the post-2013 songs that break the game's canon itself. Only a few stations like West Coast Classics really felt like they were done "right". Too $hort's "So You Wanna be a Gangster" hits hard during the LS sunsets and Snoop Dogg's "Gin & Juice" is a god damn classic.

Also, for those wanting to replay GTA IV - I really do recommend this - get the Top 100 songs of 2008 and put them on your Independence FM playlist. Yeah, it sounds weird playing 2008 pop hits on GTA IV, but I swear to god it hits perfectly. GTA IV is basically a 2008 time capsule, so having Rihanna's "Don't Stop the Music" or Kanye West's "Stronger" start playing while cruising through Liberty City just hits well. If I get tired of the pop music, I can easily switch to GTA IV's proven hit radio stations. It feels like it accompanies the game rather than distorts it. I'm taking Roman to a usual bowling game, and Liberty City is hitting its orange sunset, and suddenly Rihanna's "Disturbia" (which let's be honest was a banger) starts playing on the radio. Something about that hits perfectly, like yep, I'm back in good old 2008.
